    Abstract
This paper examines the relevance of the expert systems approach to information retrieval. First, the purpose and nature of expert systems are outlined, and it is argued that only in domains with relatively limited and clear-cut rule-sets will such systems be viable in the near future. The expert systems approach is then related to the provision of interfaces for OPACs and IR systems. Intermediary systems, designed to clarify through dialogue the terms of a client's information need, are described, and the prospects for such systems are discussed. It is argued that relatively straightforward rule-sets should suffice, and that useful systems may therefore be available fairly soon. Since they could facilitate access to general as well as to specialised information, the potential demand for such systems would seem to be enormous

    Abstract
Reports a 1-day seminar which was organized by the Library Association Technology Group, Birmingham, 21 Mar 89. The following topics were presented: intelligent interfaces to online-data bases; knowledge-based abstracting; an expert selector of OPACs for subject access; neural nets and information science and value adders; and library and information science professionals and knowledge engineering.

    Abstract
Describes the Utlas database with specific reference 10 its design, file structure and content. Means of access to the database, and products and services supported by the database, are addressed, along with interfaces to local systems. The interaction between bibliographic and authority records is also described.

    Abstract
CD-ROM data bases are being adopted rapidly by libraries and are being made available to end-users. Compares online information retrieval systems and CD-ROM based retrieval systems, assessing structure and content characteristics that contribute to user behaviour. CD-ROM systems are comparable in database content and in interface style, although CD-ROM systems often provide multiple user interfaces, have smaller databases, less time pressure, and no telecommunications requirements. Some of the differences might lead to better retrieval performance by novice users, but many unanswered questions remain about the influence of time pressure, database size, interface style, training, and skill transfer among systems

    Abstract
The task facing the designers of information retrieval (IR) systems can be stated very simply: to produce the right kind of system with the right components at the right price. In practice, however, this task is greatly hindered by a lack of understanding and communication between the different groups of specialists working on different parts of the system - a problem exacerbated by the fact that each group uses a different jargon, so preventing the exchange of ideas and expertise. There is thus a need for a comprehensive, unified overview of practical computer-based retrieval, and this book provides one. It describes the various parts and their alternative forms, the relationships between them and how these affect the working of the system as a whole. Topics covered include: user, software, knowledge representation, expert systems, database management systems, hardware, user interfaces.

    Abstract
When considering an end-user's need to access information in a large data base, the real difference introduced by CD-ROM is not access from the personal computer per se, but local access from the personal computer. The question that must ne asked is this: should this difference affect the design of the user interface for searching large data bases on CD-ROM? 6 CD-ROM bibliographic data base products are reviewed: BRS/colleague MEDLINE, Wilsondisc Cumulative Book Index and MLA International bibliography, Dialog OnDisc ERIC, SilverPlatter Sociofile, CCOHS (Reteaco Findit) CCINFOdisc, and KnowledgeFinder MEDLINE. The user interface and functionality of each product is discussed in terms of 5 criteria: browsing, using menus, refining a search, accessing an on-line version, and printing and saving results. This review distinguishes between design features in each product which are holdovers from the on-line command interfaces of the past and innovations in user interface design made possible by having the data base locally on CD-ROM

    Abstract
Many evaluations of screen design for computer system interfaces are subjective. At best, they consist of sophisticated measures of user behaviour based on instruments devised by cognitive scientists: at worst, they represent only the preconceived notions of software designers. 2 straightforward experiments are described that use tallies of keyboarding errors as a measure of interface effectiveness. By programming the computer to keep such tallies during the input of search logic for a retrieval system, it is possible to obtain objectives and empirically based data for comparing the effectiveness of different interface designs
