    Abstract
Describes the design and implementation of an interface generator for constructing advanced visual query WWW interfaces that allow the specification of complex queries. The generated inerfaces share a consistent look and feel. The tool accepts as input a high-level specification of the interface and produces as output its implementation

    Abstract
Modern online information systems have been criticized as being too complicated for the average information seeker. To overcome this problem interfaces have been developed to assist users at all stages of the information transfer process from searching to analysis and evaluation of retrieval data. However, the effectiveness of an interface will depend on the skills of the user. Further development of interfaces will be aided by the use of Windows and mouse controlled systems

    Abstract
Reports on a NORDINFO sponsored conference held in Dec 93 on general OPAC development and specific library projects. Session 1 sealt with problems of design of interfaces for library-based information systems and ecological interfaces for visualization of user's domain knowledge in OPAC systems. The general debate in session 2 was followed by session 3's consideration of evaluation as part of the OPAC interface design. In session 4 user studies were presented from Nordic countries and Holland. The need was felt for a 3rd generation of OPACs which can take account of the different users' need for interfaces

    Abstract
User interfaces of Web search engines reflect attributes of the underlying tools used to create them, rather than what we know about how people look for information. In this article, the author examines several characteristics of user search behavior: the variety of information-seeking goals, the cultural and situational context of search, and the iterative nature of the search task. An analysis of these characteristics suggests ways that interfaces can be redesigned to make searching more effective for users.

    Abstract
An evidence-based practice approach to search interface design is proposed, with the goal of designing interfaces that adequately support search strategy formulation and reformulation. Relevant findings from studies of information professionals' searching behaviors, end users' searching of bibliographic databases, and search behaviors on the Web are highlighted. Three brief examples are presented to illustrate the ways in which findings from such studies can be used to make decisions about the design of search interfaces. If academic research can be effectively connected with design practice, we can discover which design practices truly are best practices and incorporate them into future search interfaces.

    Abstract
Reports the findings of a study, conducted by Temple, Barker and Sloane Inc., MA, which identified 7 measurable benefits of graphic user interfaces to computerized information retrieval systems; higher speed; more accurate work; higher productivity; less frustration; less fatigue, more facilities to self teach and explore system; greater facilities for novices to learn more about the system's capabilities. Concludes that, when compared with character based user interfaces, graphic user interfaces generate higher work outputs per work hour through higher productivity; higher work output per employee through lower levels of frustration and fatigue; and greater returns on information technology investment through reduced demand for user training

    Abstract
A framework for describing the design space of human computer interfaces is presented which relates interface modes, channels, media and styles for both input and output interfaces. Language and action modes are said to be supported through use of the audio, visual and haptic channels. Interface media are derived from the combination of modality and channel. The implications of the framework for interface design are discussed

    Abstract
Interfaces for information access and retrieval are a long way from the ideal of the electronic book that you can cuddle up with in bed. Nevertheless, today's interfaces are coming closer to supporting browsing, selection, and retrieval or remote information by nontechnical users. This article describes five interfaces to distributed systems of servers that have been designed and implemented: WAIStation for the Macintosh, XWAIS for X-Windows, GWAIS for Gnu-Emacs, SWAIS for dumb terminals, and Rosebud for the Macintosh. These interfaces talk to one of two server systems: the WAIS system on the Internet, and the Rosebud Server System, on an internal network at Apple Computer. Both server systems are built on Z39.50, a standard protocol, and thus support access to a wide range of remote databases. The interfaces described here reflect a variety of design constraints. Such constraints range from the mundane-coping with dumb terminals and limited screen space to the challenging. Amog the challenges addressed are how to provide passive alerts, how to make information easily scannable, and how to support retrieval and browsing by nontechnical users. There are a variety of other issues which have received little or no attention, including budgeting money for access to 'for pay' databases, privacy, and how to assist users in finding out which of a large (changing) set of databases holds relevant information. We hope that the challenges we have identified, as well as the existence and public availability of source code for the WAIS system, will serve as a stimulus for further design work on interfaces for information retrieval

    Abstract
Users interact with museum application interfaces for many reasons. There are various types of users, who want to perform various tasks, in various contexts, that can access the same Web site. Thus, it is important to have user interfaces able to adapt to these different user requirements to facilitate the accomplishment of the desired goals. Most current interfaces to museum information do not take into account this variety of types of users, thus providing interfaces that some users find confusing to achieve their goals. In this article we discuss the various possible levels of support that can be given to different users during navigation of museum information. In particular, we focus our attention on how to obtain adaptable and adaptive interfaces using the web site for the Marble Museum, which we have designed and developed, as a source of examples for our discussion of possible solutions

    Abstract
Presents a conceptual model for hypermedia systems that, among ohter features, supports versioning, permits exploring and managing alternate configurations, maintains document histories, supports cooperative work and provides automatic propagation of version changes. In general, the model was designed to minimize the cognitive overhead imposed on the user by version manipulation. Presents a generic layered architecture for hypermedia systems with 4 major interfaces and shows how it matches the conceptual model
