    Abstract
Reports results of a study to determine the need for an alternative classification scheme for children, whether elementary school children have the ability to use such a classification system and the extent to which the use of colours and symbols as search aids may facilitate their search efforts. Findings of the study indicated that children do have the ability to use a system which is designed in keeping with their developmental level and that the use of colours and symbols as supplementary search aids can be successful

    Abstract
Discusses the problems encountered by elementary school children in retrieving information from catalogues, either traditional card catalogues or OPACs. Describes an alternative system of classification using colours and symbols that was developed in The Common School of Amherst, Mass. The case study found that children do have the ability to use a classification scheme that is keyed to their developmental level and that employs both colours and symbols to facilitate their search efforts
