Abstract

Describes SIFT (Search in Free Text) an information retrieval system originally developed for administering governmental documents in Norway but which is now being applied alsewhere. SIFT handles structured information well. A library system, SIFT-BIBL, is now available. SIFT's retrieval engine and search facilities are powerful. Its user interface is limited but being imporved. An application programmer interface has been released which will allow programmers to develop their own interface. A Windows-based- client-server version is now being beta tested

Abstract

Reports the results of a study, conducted at the National Technical Information Centre and Library (OMIKK), Hungary, to compare 5 popular proprietary CD-ROM searching software packages: OPTIWARE; BRS/Search; ProQuest; SPIRS; and Dialog OnDisc Manager. Software evaluation was based on analysis of a range of CD-ROM bibliographic databases (with the exception of BRS/Search for which the library held no bibliographic databases) and focused on: response times for various activities (logging on, searching, retrieval, display); other performance factors; direct searching features (Boolean operators, proximity operators, arithmetic relations, truncation); index browsing; search strategy handling; display possibilities; output possibilities; and ergonomic and user friendliness factors. No general conclusions are drawn and users are left to draw their own conclusions

Abstract

The library of the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium is a specialised research library with some 14.000 books and 550 current periodical subscirptions. Since 1990 the library has used Bib/SEARCH (version 2.9) library management program to provide online catalogue and database information facilities. The system is structured to enable easy transfer of data from other sources, and fields may be defined according to the library' needs. Despite minor problems such as the indexing routine, experience at the Institute has been positive. A new version of the system is currently under development

Reviews experience with the new trial version for interface with DOS at the College of Mexico, covering search, browse, print, edit, select, help and database functions. During 1994, Dataware Technologies acquired the BRS/SEARCH text retrieval package from InfoPro Technologies, as well as exclusive worldwide marketing rights for the Total Recall application programming interface from Kinesis. The products are now being used to create information management applications which offer users the best of 2 very different worlds: the processing power of the relational database, together with the content based searching facilities of a text retrieval system. Abstract

Reports a review of current and planned developments of the leading suppliers of text retrieval software, aimed at trying to establish trends in the industry. The products evaluated are those from minicomputer and mainframe computer backgrounds and can be best described as fully functional text information management systems, the majority of which operate in inverted file structures which index every word. Announces WebSPIRS v3.0, an enhanced version of the Web gateway form SilverPlatter Information, Inc. The update is an http gateway that provides access to the WWW via SilverPlatter's Internet Subscription Service on the librar's ERL network, using any forms-capable browser. This eliminates the need to install individual search software at workstations. Features in the updated version include: a new, simplified interface; search history capabilities; record selection and marking capabilities; enhancements to the thesaurus; point and click record display options; 'message of the day' option; and enhanced online help. WebSPIRS is a good introduction to database searching for novices and is IP filtered and password protected

Abstract

In this article, the sixth in a series on microcomputer software for information storage and retrieval, test results of nine programs are presented and various properties and qualities of these programs are discussed. We discuss additional programs for information storage and retrieval and for text retrieval from several of the various categories which have been looked at in previous instalments. On new (secondary) type of ISR software is defined as administrative software. The program review in this issue are BRS-Search, dtSearch, InfoBank, Micro-OPC, Q&A, STN-PFS, Strix, TINman and ZYIndex. All but dtSearch and ZYIndex can be regarded as primarily classical retrieval packages; Q&A boasts comprehensive administrative features as well; dtSearch and ZYIndex are indexing programs. For ZYIndex a new Windows version has been tested. All other programs run under MS-DOS. For each of the nine programs about 100 facts and test results are tabulated. All the programs are individually discussed as well

Abstract

Describes the creation of a database of citations in a narrow subject area from references downloaded from commercial databases, with customised added indexing, for access by end users. The database was on the subject of biological environmental and physical aspects of arctic wetlands and was compiled by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. Databases were selected from the DIALOG and ORBIT hosts and downloaded records were loaded into a database using Pro-Cite software and searched using Inmagic search software
