    Abstract
    Evaluates the performance of 8 major Internet search engines in answering 21 real reference questions and 5 made up subject questions. Reports on the retrieval and relevancy ranking abilities of the search engines. Concludes that the search engines did not produce good results for the reference questions unlike for the subject questions. The best engines are identified by type of questions, with Infoseek best for the subject questions, and OpenText best for refrence questions

    Abstract
    Internet Newsgroup archives on services such as DejaNews offer important sources of information that may not be found elsewhere online. Describes the content of the DejaNews Database which goes back to 1995 and covers more than 14,000 newsgroups. There are 2 search options: quick search and power search. Most Web search engines offer links to DejaNews, but AltaVista offers a smaller alternative and supplement to DejaNews. Reference.COM also offers a searchable archive, as well as a useful current awareness service which allows setting up multiple searches under the user profile tab

    Abstract
    An exploratory research project was undertaken to understand how novice college students and Web savvy librarians initially envisioned the Internet and how these representations changed over time and with experience. Users' representation of the Internet typically contained few meaningful reference points excepting "landmarks" such as search sites and frequently visited sites. For many of the users, the representation was largely procedural, and therefore organized primarily by time. All novice users conceptualized search engines as literally searching the entire Internet when a query was issued. Web savvy librarians understood the limitations of search engines better, but did still expect search engines to follow familiar organizational schemes and to indicate their cataloguing system. Although all users initially approached the Internet with high expectations of information credibility, expert users learned early on that "anyone can publish." In response to the lack of clear credibility conventions, librarians applied the same criteria they used with traditional sources. However, novice users retained high credibility expectations because their exposure was limited to the subscription-based services within their college library. And finally, during an assigned search task new users expected "step by step" instructions and self-evident cues to interaction. They were also overwhelmed and confused by the amount of information "help" displayed and became impatient when a context appropriate solution to their problem was not immediately offered

    Abstract
    Search engine coverage relative to the estimated size of the publicly indexable web has decreased substantially since December 97, with no engine indexing more than about 16% of the estimated size of the publicly indexable web. (Note that many queries can be satisfied with a relatively small database). Search engines are typically more likely to index sites that have more links to them (more 'popular' sites). They are also typically more likely to index US sites than non-US sites (AltaVista is an exception), and more likely to index commercial sites than educational sites. Indexing of new or modified pages byjust one of the major search engines can take months. 83% of sites contain commercial content and 6% contain scientific or educational content. Only 1.5% of sites contain pornographic content. The publicly indexable web contains an estimated 800 million pages as of February 1999, encompassing about 15 terabytes of information or about 6 terabytes of text after removing HTML tags, comments, and extra whitespace. The simple HTML "keywords" and "description" metatags are only used on the homepages of 34% of sites. Only 0.3% of sites use the Dublin Core metadata standard.

    Reprots the results of a study which sought indications of the effectiveness of searching for information on the WWW versus the traditional online vendors, for comparisons of how it took to search, and for comments on the relative value of the results retrieved. Professional searchers were invited to search for answers to the same questions on both the WWW and on either DIALOG or Dow Jones Interactive. Overall DIALOG / Dow Jones Interactive retrieved more relevant documents and total searching time was more than double for finding information on the Web.     Abstract
    A growing body of research is beginning to explore the information-seeking behavior of Web users. The vast majority of these studies have concentrated on the area of textual information retrieval (IR). Little research has examined how people search for non-textual information on the Internet, and few large-scale studies have investigated visual information-seeking behavior with Web search engines. This study examined visual information needs as expressed in users' Web image queries. The data set examined consisted of 1,025,908 sequential queries from 211,058 users of EXCITE, a major Internet search service. Twenty-eight (28) terms were used to identify queries for both still and moving images, resulting in a subset of 33,149 image queries by 9,855 users. We provide data on: (1) image queries -- the number of queries and the number of search terms per user, (2) image search sessions -- the number of queries per user, modifications made to subsequent queries in a session, and (3) image terms -- their rank/frequency distribution and the most highly used search terms. On average, there were 3. 36 image queries per user containing an average of 3.74 terms per query. Image queries contained a large number of unique terms. The most frequently occurring image related terms appeared less than 10 percent of the time, with most terms occurring only once. This analysis is contrasted to earlier work by Enser (1995) who examined written queries for pictorial information in a non-digital environment. Implications for the development of models for visual information retrieval, and for the design of Web search engines are discussed
