    Abstract
    The explosion of the Internet and information technology in general has created challenges and opportunities for information professionals that are redefining their role. Information professionals now interact with different groups within an organization, such as the Management Information System (MIS) staff and must have the ability to work effectively with MIS as a team to make the content of the system readily available. To do this they must keep up with the latest technologies related to text retrieval, content organization, search technologies, and knowledge management. Explores the opportunities for information professionals to expand their role with these new technologies and with MIS.     Abstract
    Business librarianship is affected by a combination of forces. Among them are the nature of business as a discipline, the characteristics of business publications, and the needs and expectations of business patrons. Business reference queries are almost always complex. To handle them well, the librarian must spend considerable time with each patron. Bibliographic expertise and subject knowledge are also required. Ways to improve the quality of business reference service include a willingness to help patrons devise appropriate search strategies, assisting them in understanding and evaluating search results, investing in self-education, developing service-oriented reference policies, implementing flexible reference desk schedules, and establishing formal staff training programs

    Abstract
    To identify the information search patterns of business communities, 2 surveys were conducted, one aimed at small businesses and the other at medium sized businesses. Use of different information sources, especially the public library, for business purposes were examined. Results show that businesses obtain information more through informal sources than formal ones. The customer is the most important business information source. Although less than 50% of the businesses surveyed reported using public libraries for business purposes in the previous year, the majority of those who did use the library sought help from library staff. Public libraries are more important for small businesses, especially those in their early stages of development, than for medium-sized businesses

    Abstract
    City of Westminster Central Reference Library's Information for Business Service was launched in 1986 with the aim of providing a value-added service and generating income. Initial charges, which were set using the minimum of market research, were found to be too low (£100 per year plus extra charges for photocopying, fax and lengthy searches). The present scheme is still based on an annual subscription but is time-based with £250 for 10 hours of search time. Clients are largely service companies such as management consultants, solicitors, accountants, design consultants, finance companies and recruitment consultants.

    Abstract
    The economics of information is a cross disciplinary area in which the paradigms from 2 disciplines, economics and information science, operate to influence the conceptualisation of the value of information. In this paper we investigate the relationship between information and economics through an analysis of representational literature on the value of information in both disciplines. It was concluded that whilst the search continues at a theoretical level for a conceptualisation of the value of information which can be operationalised, a pragmatic view should be taken in practice based on the level of analysis and context of examination of the value of information

    Abstract
    Examines why knowledge of user needs is not used to develop information systems, while aiming to identify the features of user needs which should be noted. Different types of information: operative, directive, supporting, state of the art, feedback, and private, place differnt demands on the system. Examines paradigms, conditions and methods used in studies of information needs and uses and factors which influence information seeking behaviour. Lists different methods for identifying information needs, with emphasis on Davis's 1987 strategy. Many variables make it difficult to determine information behaviour. Presents a contextual, explanatory model indicating factors influencing an individual's group's or organisation's information use. The factors are complex and change, and systems constructionmust thus be flexible.     Abstract
    The organisation of knowledge for exploitation and re-use in the modern enterprise is often a most perplexing challenge. The entire knowledge management life-cycle (for example - create, capture, organize, store, search, and transfer) is impacted by the organisation of intellectual capital into a corporate taxonomy or at the least a knowledge map (often incorrectly used interchangeably). Determining the extent to which such an objective is achieved is the focus of what is known as a knowledge audit. In this practice-oriented article, the authors review the fundamentals of creating a taxonomy, the use of metadata in a necessary process known as classification and the role of expertise locators where the knowledge is not explicit but resides within experts in the form of tacit knowledge. The authors conclude with a framework for developing a corporate taxonomy and how such a project may be executed. The conceptual contribution of this article is the postulation that corporate taxonomies that are designed to facilitate knowledge audits lead to greater organizational impact.
