    Abstract
Reports experimental results concerning user interaction with document organisation, user-librarian negotiation and the librarian's search process in public libraries. The focus of the investigations is on the cognitive aspects of information retrieval. Discusses the cognitive viewpoint on which the research is based, outlining applicable findings and theories within the fields of cognitive science and cognitive psychology. It is shown how the user's knowledge structure cope with the structures of the system. User needs seem often to be presented as a label which may create ambiguity problems. Functions of open and closed questions are investigated and certain behaviouristic factors discussed. Librarians prefer search activity before consideration of the presented problem. Without a user present the librarian's information retrieval process is determined by 3 search attitudes involving motives and expectations as to search routines and possibilities. Conceptual knowledge, previous search and working domain play important roles. The attitudes have consequences for the objectives concerning use of routines and for the use of search concepts

    Abstract
Experiments in online searching behaviour have failed to explain the phenomena they were designed to study. An examination of the variables used in research to data finds the most commonly used independent variables are searcher characteristics. Search-process and search outcome variables are the most commonly dependent variables. The search process variables are inadequate because they are situational and subject to constant change. Significantly, these variables measure the cost of a search rather than the intellectual processes involved in answering a request. While these experiments could support the discovery of the 'productive searcher', they cannot uncover searching behaviour. Only in-depth analyses of the search process itself can lead to productive research

    Abstract
A new approach to generate string index entries from concept networks is discussed: terms from multi-term search specifications are cited near the beginning of the entry, while an articulated entry structure indicative of concept relations is retained.

    Abstract
The authors have studied the transaction counts from two and one-half years activity at the public use terminals of the Ohio State University Libraries' prototype online card catalog to determine what search options academic library patrons use the most often and whether this pattern varies from that reported in major catalog use studies. The preliminary findings indicate significant differences in search strategy that may result from a unique user group that prefers to search the online catalog, more useful searches in the online system, or special search patterns imposed by the computer hardware itself. Both the different searches used by patrons and why they choose them should be important factors in the design of future online catalogs

    Abstract
The depth of indexing, the number of terms assigned on average to each document in a retrieval system as entry points, has a significantly effect on the standard retrieval performance measures in modern commercial retrieval systems, just as it did in previous experimental work. Tests on the effect of basic index search, as opposed to controlled vocabulary search, in these real systems are quite different than traditional comparisons of free text searching with controlled vocabulary searching. In modern commercial systems the controlled vocabulary serves as a precision device, since the strucure of the default for unqualified search terms in these systems requires that it do so.
