    Abstract
Many libraries manage Web sites intended to provide their users with online resources suitable for answering reference questions. Most of these sites can be analyzed in terms of their depth, and their organizing and searching features. Composing a typology based on these factors sheds light on the critical design decisions that influence whether users of these sites succees or fail to find information easily, rapidly and accurately. The same analysis highlights some larger design issues, both for Web sites and for information management at large

    Abstract
Stresses the need for sites evaluating Internet resources. Lists sites and outlines how they are evaluated. Librarians need to collaborate more, and reviews need to become more consistent and informative for the user. Describes the model followed by the Marr/Kirkwood Official Guide to Business Schools Web. This uses a tabular format and compares business school sites on a set of standard criteria. The format lends itself to multiple reviewers

    Abstract
Some web sites "work" and some don't. Good web site consultants know that you can't just jump in and start writing HTML, the same way you can't build a house by just pouring a foundation and putting up some walls. You need to know who will be using the site, and what they'll be using it for. You need some idea of what you'd like to draw their attention to during their visit. Overall, you need a strong, cohesive vision for the site that makes it both distinctive and usable. Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is about applying the principles of architecture and library science to web site design. Each web site is like a public building, available for tourists and regulars alike to breeze through at their leisure. The job of the architect is to set up the framework for the site to make it comfortable and inviting for people to visit, relax in, and perhaps even return to someday. Most books on web development concentrate either on the aesthetics or the mechanics of the site. This book is about the framework that holds the two together. With this book, you learn how to design web sites and intranets that support growth, management, and ease of use. Special attention is given to: * The process behind architecting a large, complex site * Web site hierarchy design and organization Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is for webmasters, designers, and anyone else involved in building a web site. It's for novice web designers who, from the start, want to avoid the traps that result in poorly designed sites. It's for experienced web designers who have already created sites but realize that something "is missing" from their sites and want to improve them. It's for programmers and administrators who are comfortable with HTML, CGI, and Java but want to understand how to organize their web pages into a cohesive site. The authors are two of the principals of Argus Associates, a web consulting firm. At Argus, they have created information architectures for web sites and intranets of some of the largest companies in the United States, including Chrysler Corporation, Barron's, and Dow Chemical.

    Abstract
Citation analysis has long been used by librarians as an important tool of collection development and the advent of Internet technology and especially the WWW adds a new facet to the role played by citation analysis. One of the reasons why librarians create WWW homepages is to provide users with further sources of interest or reference and to do this libraries include links from their own homepages to other information sources. Reports current research on the analysis of WWW pages as an introduction to an examination of the homepages of 25 art libraries to determine what sites are most often included. The types of linked sites are analyzed based on 3 criteria: location, focus and evidence that the link was evaluated before the connection was establisheds

    Abstract
Users who want to exploit all the information sources on the Web will need an efficient search and selection tool e.g. a directory or search engine. Directories list Web sites and analyze their contents. Describes the behind-the-scenes work of documentalists specialized in surfing, tracking and indexing French language sites for the directory Nomade. Describes the creation of Nomade, its functioning and indexing, and how this new profession of 'cyber-documentalist' is changing the practices and functions of information professionals as they become Internet information organizers

    Abstract
To improve searching, filtering and processing of information on the Web, a common effort is made in the direction of metadata, defined as machine understandable information about Web resources or other things. In particular, the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) aims at providing a common syntax to emerging metadata formats. Proposes the Structured Graph Format (SGF) an XML compliant markup language based on structured graphs, for capturing Web sites' structure. Presents SGMapper, a client-site tool, which aims to facilitate navigation in large Web sites by generating highly interactive site maps using SGF metadata

    Abstract
In building intelligent network agents, computer scientists may employ a variety of different design strategies, and their design decisions can have a significant effect on the ultimative nature of network interactions. Focuses on a particular design question, the multiple-access problem: if an agent seeking a piece of information knows of several sites that have, or might have, that information, how many queries should it issue, and when? Provides a formal analysis that demonstrates the viability of cooperative responses th this question under certain assumptions. discusses the limitations of this analysis and presents the results of experiments done using a genetic-algorithms approach in which simulated network agents 'evolve' cooperative strategies under less restrictive assumptions tham those made in the formal analysis

    Abstract
Presents the results of a study conducted at Georgia Institute of Technology that captured client side user events of NCSA's XMosaic. Actual user behaviour, as determined from client-side log file analysis, supplemented the understanding of user navigation strategies as well as provided real interface usage data. Log file analysis also yielded design and usability suggestions for WWW pages, sites and browsers. Discusses the methodology of the study and findings along with future research directions

    Abstract
Subject oriented information sources on the Internet remain relativley unstructured despite attempts at indexing them and despite the use of search engines to index sources in a collective database and to retrieve relevant information sources. Describes the rationale for developing a means to capture and structure Internet resources for scientific research use in a clearinghouse, and methods for retrieval, information filtering, and structuring subject orientated information sources from the Internet for specific user groups. Discusses the issues of design, maintenance, implementation of metadata, and obtaining use feedback. Cooperation among several institutions involved in the German national subject special collections (SSG) library support programme of the DFG have led to recommendations to expand this programme to include coordination of collective Internet subject information sites. In addition to the compilation of subject oriented information sites on the Internet by library and information staff, connection to other value added services serve to make processes of information searching, retrieval, acquisition, and evaluation more effective for researchers

    Abstract
Taking a step beyond Meta search engines which require Web site evaluation skills and a knowledge of how to construct effective search statements, we encounter the concept of a seamless, Web-based library. These are electronic libraries created by information professionals, Meta sites for the 21st Century. Here is a place where average people with average Internet skills can find significant Web sites arranged under a hierarchy of subject categories. Having observed client behavior in a university library setting for a quarter of a century, it is apparent that the extent to which information is used has always been determined by content applicable to user needs, an easy-to-understand design, and high visibility. These same elements have determined the extent to which Internet Quick Reference (IQR), a seamless, Web-based library at cc.usu.edu/-stewei/hot.htm. has been used
