    Abstract
Some web sites "work" and some don't. Good web site consultants know that you can't just jump in and start writing HTML, the same way you can't build a house by just pouring a foundation and putting up some walls. You need to know who will be using the site, and what they'll be using it for. You need some idea of what you'd like to draw their attention to during their visit. Overall, you need a strong, cohesive vision for the site that makes it both distinctive and usable. Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is about applying the principles of architecture and library science to web site design. Each web site is like a public building, available for tourists and regulars alike to breeze through at their leisure. The job of the architect is to set up the framework for the site to make it comfortable and inviting for people to visit, relax in, and perhaps even return to someday. Most books on web development concentrate either on the aesthetics or the mechanics of the site. This book is about the framework that holds the two together. With this book, you learn how to design web sites and intranets that support growth, management, and ease of use. Special attention is given to: * The process behind architecting a large, complex site * Web site hierarchy design and organization Information Architecture for the World Wide Web is for webmasters, designers, and anyone else involved in building a web site. It's for novice web designers who, from the start, want to avoid the traps that result in poorly designed sites. It's for experienced web designers who have already created sites but realize that something "is missing" from their sites and want to improve them. It's for programmers and administrators who are comfortable with HTML, CGI, and Java but want to understand how to organize their web pages into a cohesive site. The authors are two of the principals of Argus Associates, a web consulting firm. At Argus, they have created information architectures for web sites and intranets of some of the largest companies in the United States, including Chrysler Corporation, Barron's, and Dow Chemical.

    Abstract
Politicians' Web sites have been considered a medium for organizing, mobilizing, and agenda-setting, but extant literature lacks a systematic approach to interpret the Web sites of senators - a new medium for political communication. This study classifies the role of political Web sites into relational (hyperlinking) and topical (shared-issues) aspects. The two aspects may be viewed from a social embeddedness perspective and three facets, as K. Foot and S. Schneider ([2002]) suggested. This study employed network analysis, a set of research procedures for identifying structures in social systems, as the basis of the relations among the system's components rather than the attributes of individuals. Hyperlink and issue data were gathered from the United States Senate Web site and Yahoo. Major findings include: (a) The hyperlinks are more targeted at Democratic senators than at Republicans and are a means of communication for senators and users; (b) the issue network found from the Web is used for discussing public agendas and is more highly utilized by Republican senators; (c) the hyperlink and issue networks are correlated; and (d) social relationships and issue ecologies can be effectively detected by these two networks. The need for further research is addressed.

    Abstract
This study compares the United States of America and Korea's cases of national information infrastructure (NII) development, focusing on the role of the governments in the development of their NIIs and on the realization of the next generation of information infrastructure vision. The important similarities and differences can be seen by comparison on sociotechnical dimensions: government function, histories, visions, policy design, implementation plans, and realities and prospects. Findings show different patterns of NII development, providing insights for the next generation of NIIs. This study provides a prospect towards future information infrastructure needs in the context of dynamic sociotechnical changes.

    Abstract
Kaye and Johnson are interested in the effect of interaction with the Internet on time spent with more traditional media by persons with a strong interest in politics, a topic on which previous research has provided conflicting results. They posted a survey on the Web requesting respondents from within the United States which was advertised in politically oriented newsgroups, political chat rooms, politically oriented web sites, and posted on 40 search services and which collected data from the responding convenience sample of 442 in 2000 and 307 in 1996. Respondents were asked about change in their time spent with traditional media, as well as their trust in government, self efficacy, interest in politics, reliance on traditional sources, reliance on the web, other internet based electronic information sources, and their demographic characteristics. Over the time period female respondents increased from one quarter to one third. The average age increased by 10.8 years, and those reporting a high level of trust in government increased from 11.9% to 35.2%. Reported high self efficacy rose from 44.7% to 74%. Internet users are spending significantly less time reading news magazines in the second survey, and while the difference in television viewing is not significantly different, the decrease in radio listening for political information is. Respondents also report spending significantly less time talking about politics in 2000. About one half the respondents report spending less time with traditional media while the other half claim the internet has not effected their use of these sources.

    Abstract
Many libraries manage Web sites intended to provide their users with online resources suitable for answering reference questions. Most of these sites can be analyzed in terms of their depth, and their organizing and searching features. Composing a typology based on these factors sheds light on the critical design decisions that influence whether users of these sites succees or fail to find information easily, rapidly and accurately. The same analysis highlights some larger design issues, both for Web sites and for information management at large

    Abstract
In recent years, many evaluations of Web sites have been conducted, and relevant researches have also been carried out in academic circles. Correspondence analysis is introduced in this paper to evaluate university library Web sites through building a correspondence analysis model. This paper gives suggestions as to how to construct university library Web sites based on analysis and summary of evaluation results, in a bid to strengthen the construction of university library Web sites.

    Abstract
The scale of web site design has grown so that what was once comparable to decorating a room is now comparable to designing buildings or even cities. Designing sites so that people can find their way around is an ever-growing challenge as sites contain more and more information. In the past, Information Architecture for the World Wide Web has helped developers and designers establish consistent and usable structures for their sites and their information. This edition of the classic primer on web site design and navigation is updated with recent examples, new scenarios, and new information on best practices. Readers will learn how to present large volumes of information to visitors who need to find what they're looking for quickly. With topics that range from aesthetics to mechanics, this valuable book explains how to create interfaces that users can understand easily.

    Abstract
The Internet, an electronic computer network that connects millions of computers around the world, has taken the international library community by strom. The library community is excited about the Internet because it offers a real, concrete step toward creating desktop access to information, the so-called 'electronic libraries' that librarians have been talking about for years. The momentum toward creating electronic libraries will accelerate with the introduction of initiatives to create 'information superhighways' capable of bringing tremendous amounts of information directly to the home. The most well-known initiative is NREN, the National Research and Education Network, in the United States

    Abstract
Australian public libraries need to become aware of the rich resources available on the Internet. Internet is a channel for sharing ideas, keeping in touch with developments and finding out about new services for libraries. It is also an information resource for reference work and other library activities. In the United States progress towards Internet access for public libraries, schools and even the general public is evident. This paper looks at the prospects and possibilities of Internet access for Australian public libraries
