    Abstract
Describes the design and use of the ARCHWAY computer records management system developed by Portmouth City Records Office to improve accessioning, cataloguing and indexing procedures. The result of close cooperation between professional archivists and professional computer specialists, ARCHWAY is extremely aesy to use. Illustrates the accessioning procedure and describes how the MAD2 archival description standards have been used for cataloguing. For an increasing number of records managers ARCHWAY offers the most convenient, usable and effective method of automating the cataloguing process and producing powerful search facilities as well

    Abstract
Describes methods whereby the process of retrieving bibliographic information from one electronic source (e.g. on-line data base) and its subsequent insertion into another data base, on a personal computer, can be managed more efficiently using specialist software. Describes how one of the available packages is being used at Portsmouth Polytechnic Library, U.K.

    Abstract
The computer software package CDS/ISIS is suitable for the storage and retrieval of structured, text-oriented information, such as bibliographic descriptions. Versions exist for various hardware including IBM microcomputers and compatibles. The software is very attractive, mainly because it is powerful and because the producer, Unesco, normally fulfils requests to use it for free. Micro CDS/ISIS is reviewed in this paper which includes recent experience with version 2.3

    Abstract
CDS/ISIS is a menu-driven generalized information storage and retrieval system designed specifically for the computerized management of structured non-numerical data bases. The unique characteristic of CDS/ISIS is that it is specifically designed to handle fields (and consequently records) of varying length, thus allowing, on the one hand, an optimum utilization of disk storage and, on the other hand, a complete freedom in defining the maximum length of each field. Although some features of CDS/ISIS require some knowledge of and experience with computerized information systems, once an application has been designed the system may be used by persons having little or no prior computer experience.

    Abstract
Reports a review of current and planned developments of the leading suppliers of text retrieval software, aimed at trying to establish trends in the industry. The products evaluated are those from minicomputer and mainframe computer backgrounds and can be best described as fully functional text information management systems, the majority of which operate in inverted file structures which index every word. The survey was conducted by means of interviews with senior executives of the suppliers concerned and the suppliers and systems reviewed were: Information Dimensions (BASISplus); BRS Dataware (BRS/Search); Excalibur Technologies (EFS); Status/IQ (Status/IQ); and Verity (TOPIC)

    Abstract
Analyses the functions and applications of the computer program Iride 1.01 (CDS-ISIS Micro), distributed free to Italian schools since 1994 and developed jointly by Florence's teaching documentation library, regional education institutes, the European Education Centre and other bodies. Iride can handle a broad range of information resources, including grey literature, audiovisual materials, and CD-ROMs. Students and teachers can use Iride to design research programmes, and to create their own database catalogues. iride is closely linked with hands-on training for school libraries. Provides a technical schedule of Iride functions

    Abstract
The Internet offers everyone the opportunity to improve the quality of their work by facilitating the sharing of practical experience and the tricks of the trade. It also offers the chance to participate in an interactive approach with the developers of computer products. Aims to prevent protracted and painful periods of experimentation by users of bibliographic software by indicating some directions to pursue in this field. Discusses these products, describes the diverse resources of the Internet (Gopher, discussion groups, WWW sites and FTP), and provides some practical advice

    Abstract
CDS/ISIS is a powerful and popular software package for managing computerized bibliographic data. It is developed and maintained by UNESCO since 1985. It is free software available in binary form for MS-DOS, MS-Windows, Unix, and Unix-based operating systems like Linux. It is used by many libraries and organizations in many countries to maintain their Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) and other bibliographic databases. With the advent of the Internet and Web technologies, publishing the content of databases on the Web provides a round the clock access to the content from any PC with Internet access. Some CDS-ISIS databases are published on the Web, but many are still on standalone systems or on local area networks. Interoperability is the key for the efficient dissemination of information to end-users. The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides a technical framework for interoperability of OAI-compliant digital libraries (UNESCO. 2004). However, CDS/ISIS databases are not OAI-compliant. In this paper, we describe a simple approach, to make CDS/ISIS OAI-compliant. It is based on printing CDS/ISIS records in an OAI static repository format.
