    Abstract
This article describes various ways that electronic resources on the Internet are being controlled in Australia, and in particular how various special networks and projects are linking users of information with documents, often using the World Wide Web. It also examines the implications for libraries and for cataloguers.

    Abstract
WWW sites, consisting mainly of links to other Internet resources, have begun to proliferate and these sites are valuable to library users and researchers because they bring together in a single Web site links to a comprehensive array of information resources. Because libraries may elect to include bibliographic records for these sites in their online catalogues, cataloguers should be aware of some of the main aspects of cataloguing this new type of resource. Concludes that cataloguers should be aware of the main types and different characteristics of these Web sites, how to describe them in bibliographic records and how to assign appropriate subject headings for them

    Abstract
Presents a new Web cataloguing strategy based upon the automatic analysis of documents stored in a proxy server cache. This could be an elegant method of Web cataloguing as it creates no extra network load and runs completely automatically. Naturally such a mechanism will only reach a subset of Web documents, but at an institute such as the Alfred Wegner Institute, due to the fact that scientists tend to make quite good search engines, the cache usually contains large numbers of documents related to polar and marine research. Details of a database for polar, marine and global change research, based upon a cache scanning mechanism are given, and it is shown that it is becoming an increasingly uaseful resource

    Abstract
Describes the Alcuin Project, an informal project whose goal is to discover methods for effectively cataloguing serials and Internet resources at the North Carolina State University Libraries. The project builds upon previous work including the Mr. Serials Process, DRA/World Wide Web gateway scripts, the Alex database, the Alcuin database, and the Son of SID. Each of these projects is briefly outlined and future directions are presented

    Abstract
Substantial efforts to establish standards for encoding and accessing electronic resources have occured over the past 5 years. Reports the design of a Web based tool, Spectrum, to enable individuals without specialized knowledge of library cataloguing or markup to create records for describing and accessing networked electronic resources of various types. System users may create descriptions of electronic resources and view them as formatted USMARC bibliographic records; TEI headers and URCs. Because continued volatitlity in the definition of data element standards is anticipated, the Spectrum system is designed to allow maximum flexibility in the design of the input formats

    Abstract
As a powerful and radically new information medium, the World Wide Web has been embraced by libraries, as information centers par excellence, for its potential in effectively addressing patron needs. Because of the Web's rapid growth, librarians and other information professionals are developing a variety of solutions to bring the explosion of Web resources under control. While paradigmatic transformations like that taking place in the information industry today have become a tangible reality, information professionals are recognizing that only through the strategic redefining of the essential functions of libraries - selection, acquisition, organization, and access - will the transformative power of such change be harnessed most effectively. This paper attempts to characterize the conceptual 'playing field' of the current transformations taking place, and in so doing process a structural model of the relationship that libraries should develop to Internet-based resources. The tandem concepts of digital libraries and metadata are key components of this model, and the intent is to anchor them firmly within the organizational and managerial context of library administration. How we mentally structure and 'visualize' a library's role is the unfolding digital revolution is critical to the future of libraries as institutions. In visualizing this role, librarians should focus on the library's traditional functions and rethink these functions in the new digital environment. The two concepts hold the potential for fully integrating the essential functions of the library into the digital environment, and strategically centering the library for the critical role it should play in the coming digital society of the 21st century

The Library of Congress is participating in a number of initiatives to explore issues surrounding description and cataloging of digital materials. Additionally, programs have been written by LC staff which enable electronic enhancements in cataloging activities, such as the receipt of online information from publishers in the Electronic CIP Program. This paper is both an overview of the status of cataloging-related digital projects at LC and a description of software which facilitates productivity through the provision of advanced search capabilities and the elimination of repetitive keying.

    Abstract
Describes a project to create a bibliographic control system for archival quality video and audio recordings of political commercials. The project objectives were: to design a local computer searchable database; prepare item level records for the local database; and prepare collection level records for the OCLC Online Union Catalog. The collection level records are intended to alert scholars, researchers, and other potential users to the existence of the archive and to direct them to it for more powerful item level searching in the local database. Some of the cataloguing problems discussed are: choice of cataloguing tools and MARC formats; organization of the collections around the political candidate, and name authority

Reports from the North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) 7th annual conference at the Univ. of Illinois, June'92. Paper presented during the workshop session reports. Examines problems relating to the cataloguing of serial computer files and discusses methods of providing catalogue access to the newer types of computer files. Provides an overview of the complexities of cataloguing 'new tech serials'. Compares the cataloguing of floppy discs using serials and computer files format. Describes the cataloguing of magnetic tapes and the problems associated with them. Covers the cataloguing of CD-ROMs, single electronic journals available directly from the producer and full-text journals available in commercial databases

    Abstract
Examination of selected rules of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Second Edition, 1988 revision, (AACR2) shows that the rules are oriented towards a paper-based catalog and are, at least to some extent, not suitable for a computer environment. Thorough examination of the objectives and principles of all aspects of cataloging in the computer age is suggested, followed by subsequent development of a new type of "enhanced" code which takes advantage of considerable work done by many ALA and other units in the area of computer-aided retrieval. This code should deal with traditional catalog code questions as well a subject retrieval, catalog design, and computer capabilities. Specific suggestions are made for each section of the proposed code.

    Abstract
Describes a project based at the ESRC Data Archive, Esses University to examine standards for cataloguing computer files and the feasibility of creating a union catalogue of computer files. A pilot scheme was set up to enable the MARC record output of the ESRC Data Archive to be merged with the software records of the NISS (National Information on Software and Services) data base, which is available on the JANET network.

    Abstract
Discusses the benefits of computer assisted learning (CAL) in overcoming the problem of teaching practical cataloguing skills in already crowded library studies programmes. Describes the development of CatSkill, a CAL package offering a complete course in the use od AACR2R and machine readable cataloguing coding, and looks at the features of an effective CAL package
