    Abstract
    Examines the use of networked information sources in scholarly communication. Networked information sources are defined broadly to cover: documents and images stored on electronic network hosts; data files; newsgroups; listservs; online information services and electronic periodicals. Reports results of a survey to determine how heavily, if at all, networked information sources are cited in scholarly printed periodicals published in 1993 and 1994. 27 printed periodicals, representing a wide range of subjects and the most influential periodicals in their fields, were identified through the Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index Journal Citation Reports. 97 articles were selected for further review and references, footnotes and bibliographies were checked for references to networked information sources. Only 2 articles were found to contain such references. Concludes that, although networked information sources facilitate scholars' work to a great extent during the research process, scholars have yet to incorporate such sources in the bibliographies of their published articles

    Abstract
    Reports investigations into the feasibility and reliability of calculating impact factors for web sites, called Web Impact Factors (Web-IF). analyzes a selection of 7 small and medium scale national and 4 large web domains as well as 6 institutional web sites over a series of snapshots taken of the web during a month. Describes the data isolation and calculation methods and discusses the tests. The results thus far demonstrate that Web-IFs are calculable with high confidence for national and sector domains whilst institutional Web-IFs should be approached with caution

    Abstract
    Although the Internet is not without its critics, many popular and academic writers are particular effusive in the praise of the WWW's interactive features. A content analysis of the formal features of 496 Web sites, drawn randomly from a sample of the top 5.000 most visited sites determined by 100hot.com, was performed to explore whether the capabilities of the WWW are being exploited by Web page designers to the extent that the literature suggests they are. Specifically, the study examines the differences between the formal features of commercial versus non-commercial sites as well as the relationship between Web page complexity and the amount of traffic a site receives. Findings indicate that, although most pages in this stage of the Web's development remain technological simple and noninteractive, there are significant relationships between site traffic and home-page structure for Web sites in the commercial (.com) as well as educational (.edu) domains. As the Web continues to expand and the amount of information redundancy increases, it is argued that a site's information packaging will become increasingly important in gaining users' attention and interest

    Abstract
    Online searchers today no longer limit themselves to locating references to articles. More and more, they are called upon to locate specific answers to questions such as: Who is my chief competitor for this technology? Who is publishing the most on this subject? What is the geographic distribution of this product? These questions demand answers, not necessarily from record content, but from statistical analysis of the terms in a set of records. Most online services now provide a tool for statistical analysis such as GET on Orbit, ZOOM on ESA/IRS and RANK/RANK FILES on Dialog. With these commands, users can analyze term frequency to extrapolate very precise answers to a wide range of questions. This paper discusses the many uses of term frequency analysis and how it can be applied to areas of competitive intelligence, market analysis, bibliometric analysis and improvements of search results.     Abstract
    Continued development of the Internet requires the development of efficient, easy-to-use search engines. Ideally, such development should call upon knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines, including computer science, information science, psychology, and ergonomics. The current study is intended to determine whether search engines shows a pattern of interdisciplinarity. 2 disciplines were selected as the focus for the study: computer science, and library/information science. A citation analysis was conducted to measure levels of interdisciplinary research and publishing in Internet search engine design and development. The results show a higher level of interdisciplinarity among library and information scientists than among computer scientists or among any of those categorized as 'other'. This is reflected both in the types of journals in which the authors publish, and in the references they cite to support their work. However, almost no authors published articles or cited references in fields such as cognitive science, ergonomics, or psychology. The results of this study are analyzed in terms of the writings of Patrick Wilson, Bruno Latour, Pierre Bordieu, Fritz Ringer, and Thomas Pinelli, focusing on cognitive authority within a profession, interaction between disciplines, and information-gathering habits of professionals. Suggestions for further research are given

    Abstract
    Reports results of a study to determine if practitioners of disciplines outside library and information science read and cite articles from the LIS literature. Research shows that disciplines citing library science articles include computer science, medicine, psychology, the social sciences, and general sciences. The methodology involved using the citation index: Social SciSearch on Dialog; to analyze citations to library science periodicals over a 20 year period. Non library science fields or disciplines that cited articles published in the library journals included in this study were identified by using the periodicals subject categories on Dialog. 85.000 articles were identified within the LIS subject category. Use of the Expand command for periodical titles in the cited works field ensured the maximum set of cited works possible for each periodical. All cited references, whose subject category was LIS, were removed to leave a set of articles cited by authors in non LIS disciplines. These were ranked using the Rank command on Dialog. Although citations from other fields are higher than previous studies indicate, comparison with other fields in the social sciences shows that library science is not commanding citations at the level of the more developed fields

    The number of physics and astronomy preprints (manuscripts intended for publication but circulated for peer comment prior to submission) available electronically has increased dramatically over the past 5 years and Internet accessible preprint Web servers at the Stanford Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) and the Los Alamos National Laboratoty (LANL) provide unrestricted access to citations and full text of many of these papers long before they appear in print. Includes data for periodicals ranked by number of citations to preprints and electronic preprints (e-prints). Identifies the growing importance of e-prints in the published literature and addresses areas of concern regarding their future role in scientific communication, including: inclusion of e-prints in abstracting and indexing services; connecting electronic periodicals with e-prints; guidelines for withdrawal and revision of e-prints; and maintaining the integritiy of the e-print servers
