    Abstract
Addresses the identity politics of modern communication and information technologies. These technologies are not mere hardware, causally related to society through their effects on individual subjects. They embody social relations of domination and dependence, especially in their construction of specific forms of human subjectivity. Database constructed identites are postmodern in character: unstable, shifting and subject to the control of information processing software. The political implications of these identity construction systems are explored. The post-marxist political debate about the postmodern character of the subjects who participate in the social relations configured by the new communication and information technologies presents the most urgent issues for the possibilities of intellectual activism in the service of a democratic politics of information. Makes 6 recommendations for political work in information science

    Abstract
Describes the development, funding and staffing of the Information Literacy Program (ILP) at the Mantor Library at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). The programme aims at helping both UMF students and community patrons to understand better how and where to look for information. Instruction takes place in an electronic classroom equipped with 21 computers running campus-standard Web-browsers and word processing; the instructor's station can control all of the computers in the classroom, or the instructor may pass or share control with students. Discusses issues relating to campus politics, the positioning of the programme in the college experience, the necessity of teaching evaluation skills, and the programme's impact on reference services. gives advice to other libraries considering a similar project

    Abstract
This papers presents adaptations and tests undertaken to allow an information retrieval (IR) system to forecast the likelihood of avalanches on a particular day. The forecasting process uses historical data of the weather and avalanche condiditons for a large number of days. A method for adapting these data into a form usable by a text-based IR system is first described, followed by tests showing the resulting system's accuracy to be equal to existing 'custom built' forecasting systems. From this, it is concluded that the adaptation methodology id effective at allowing such data to be used in a text-based IR system. A number of advantages in using an IR system for avalanche forecasting are also presented

    Abstract
Many arguments exist for both centralisation and decentralisation. In principle, anyone who has a task to perfrom should have the information resources and control mechanisms to carry it out. The information resource management (IRM) approach has been resisted by many organisations, depending on their attitude and behaviour towards the question of opennes or secrecy. Various models of information politics have been idetified, with 'Monarchy' or 'federalism' identified as the 2 viable choices. An alternative development is to adopt a human centred approach to information management. To bring about a new order of information will require political skills in negotiation, the exercise of influence, 'backroom dealing' and coalition building. Abstract
In 1989, Pomona College and Claremont McKenna College, two of the Claremont Colleges, received a grant funded by the Knight Foundation through its Excellence in Undergraduate Education program. As fulfilment of the grant's objectives to strengthen library services and to provide remote access to electronic databases, a CD-ROM network was installed at the libraries. Discusses the establishment of the network, the planning and delivery of instruction in use of both local and remote databases, and the impact of electronic technologies of the libraries of the Claremont Colleges

    Abstract
In the last 10 years a number of libraries in the Netherlands have developed akternative shelf arrangements to the standard SISO system. A survey undertaken at Felde children's library following the implementation of an alternative arrangement showed that children had been unaware of the change. In 1989 the Nederlands Bibliothekk en Lektuur Centrum (Dutch Centre for Libraries and Reading) began developing a system based on trials at 15 libraries. Further implementations of the system should take account of developments with automated catalogues

    Abstract
Reviews the literature of the information chain analogous to ecology's food chain, taking the Royal Scientific Information Conference 1948 as the seminal point. Describes 8 successive models of the information chain each incorporating contemporary thoughts and experiences. Each model is labelled with the year to which it may be said to refer: Distribution of Scientific Information 1948; Document Network 1967; Dissemination of scientific and technical information 1978; Structure of Scientific Literature 1979; Ecosystem of scientific communication 1980; Information Chain 1988; Information Chain 1989; Pathways of N formation Flow 1993. Although of wide applicability the focus of interest for information scientists tends to be the communication of learned information
