- Abstract
- Library science may well have an essential role to play in efficiently organising the huge amount of Internet information available in the various scientific disciplines. The basic problem is to develop a cataloguing theory sufficiently flexible to cope with the impact of an ever changing store of network data. Such a theory would abondon the utopian idea of a 'catalogue of ctalogues', seeking instead to match each specific user query to the most appropriate catalogue. Examines 2 important USA projects for cataloguing network resources: Digital Libraries Research (funded by the National Science Foundation), which uses a combination of search engines to retrieve net data; and the Internet Public Library. Lists the Management and Library Schools now on the WWW

- Lists the characteristics of preprints of scientific articles that qualify them as grey literature and notes the way in which advances in electronic publishing, such as the Internet and WWW are modifying the traditional role of preprints in the process of scientific communication. - Abstract
- In 2003, OCLC published Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 22 (DDC 22), in print and Web versions. The changes and updates in the new edition reflect a modern view of knowledge structures and address the general needs of Dewey users. The content of DDC 22 has been shaped by a number of social, geopolitical, and technical trends. The World Wide Web has provided a vehicle for more frequent distribution of updates to the DDC, and a medium for direct communication with Dewey users around the world. In addition to updating the system itself, other strategies are needed to accommodate the needs of the global Dewey user community. Translation of the system is one approach; another is mapping. Mapping terminology to the DDC is a strategy for supporting effective local implementation of the system while maintaining the internal cohesiveness of the DDC. This paper explores the usefulness of mapping terminology from English-language general subject headings lists produced outside the U.S.

- The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has been developed by the academic technical and medical publishing sectors to enable the management of access rights to information published electronically. - Abstract
- For a snapshot of something that is mutating as quickly as the Internet, The Whole Internet: The Next Generation exhibits remarkable comprehensiveness and accuracy. It's a good panoramic shot of Web sites, Usenet newsgroups, e-mail, mailing lists, chat software, electronic commerce, and the communities that have begun to emerge around all of these. This is the book to buy if you have a handle on certain aspects of the Internet experience--e-mail and Web surfing, for example--but want to learn what else the global network has to offer--say, Web banking or mailing-list management. The authors clearly have seen a thing or two online and are able to share their experiences entertainingly and with clarity. However, they commit the mistake of misidentifying an Amazon.com book review as a publisher's synopsis of a book. Aside from that transgression, The Whole Internet presents detailed information on much of the Internet. In most cases, coverage explains what something (online stock trading, free homepage sites, whatever) is all about and then provides you with enough how-to information to let you start exploring on your own. Coverage ranges from the super-basic (how to surf) to the fairly complex (sharing an Internet connection among several home computers on a network). Along the way, readers get insight into buying, selling, meeting, relating, and doing most everything else on the Internet. While other books explain the first steps into the Internet community with more graphics, this one will remain useful to the newcomer long after he or she has become comfortable using the Internet.
