    Abstract
Context analysis is a new method for appraising a body of publications. the process consists of creating a database of attributes assigned to each paper by the reviewer and then looking for interesting relationships in the data. Assigning the attributes requires an understanding of the subject matter of the papers. Presents findings about one particular research field, Management of R&D at the Section Level. The findings support the view that this body of academic publications does not meet the needs of practitioner R&D managers. Discusses practical aspects of how to apply the method in other fields

    Abstract
The growth and use of aggregator databases have presented libraries with both new opportunities for collection enhancement and new challenges of bibliographic control. How to integrate full-text electronic journal titles in unstable aggregator databases into a library's OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) has been an especially taxing matter for libraries. This article describes the Hong Kong Baptist University Library's effort to integrate full-text electronic journal titles from three large, unstable aggregator databases into its INNOPAC-based OPAC. The library's electronic journal computer program (EJCOP) does this in a simple, direct, consistent, and accurate manner and addresses some of the issues elaborated in the January 2000 Final Report of the Task Group on Journals in Aggregator Databases of the Standing Committee on Automation of the Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging.

    Abstract
Enhancing content description of specialized resources, particularly astronomical resources, is a matter that is still unresolved in library and information science. In this paper, the authors outline deficiencies in some fields and elements of cataloging standards for description of historical astronomical resources, mainly star atlases and catalogs. Furthermore, they review their recent proposal of astronomical parameters for a better description and propose an approach for accommodating these parameters in the current criteria of MARC 21, the International Standard Bibliographic Description, and Resource Description and Access. Fourteen new parameters are considered, and recommendations are provided to standards developers for the addition of elements to accommodate attributes of celestial cartographic resources. This would improve bibliographic records for such resources in astronomical libraries' OPACs, which will have a beneficial effect on information retrieval.

    Abstract
Exploring collections by their subject matter is an important functionality for library users. We developed an online tool called SciGator in order to allow users to browse the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) classes used in different libraries at the University of Pavia and to perform different types of search in the OPAC. Besides navigation of DDC hierarchies, SciGator suggests "see-also" relationships with related classes and maps equivalent classes in local shelving schemes, thus allowing the expansion of search queries to include subjects contiguous to the initial one. We are developing new features, including the possibility to expand searches even more to national and international catalogues.

    Abstract
The central problem with understanding brain and mind is the neural code issue: understanding the matter of our brain as basis for the phenomena of our mind. The richness with which our mind represents our environment, the parsimony of genetic data, the tremendous efficiency with which the brain learns from scant sensory input and the creativity with which our mind constructs mental worlds all speak in favor of mind as an emergent phenomenon. This raises the further issue of how the neural code supports these processes of organization. The central point of this communication is that the neural code has the form of structured net fragments that are formed by network self-organization, activate and de-activate on the functional time scale, and spontaneously combine to form larger nets with the same basic structure.

    Abstract
Reports results of a comparative study to correlate the handling of concepts and subject analysis in POOPSI and Colon Classification, 7th ed. with particular reference to fundamental categories and phase relations: Studies reveal that in both cases, the concept of Basic Class and Discipline must be indicated whether the Basic Class or Discipline is explicit or implicit in the title under consideration. Also reveals that Entity in POPSI many equate with Personality, Matter Material and Matter Property in CC7. Action of POPSI may correlate with Energy, Matter Property of CC7 and Property of POPSI may correlate with Matter Property of CC7

    Abstract
The sheer amount of electronic information makes filtering a vital component of contemporary information work. Field observations of managers and engineers at the Boeing Company who received filtered information about computer-related topics revealed criteria they used to select, and those they used to reject, documents within their subject interest. Responses to a questionnaire indicated that some criteria are used more frequently and are more important than others. The few criteria that related to the subject matter of the documents were not limited to a subject domain. Other criteria addressed the form of the documents, their content, and writing style. In addition, some criteria were stable and somewhat objective and others were situational and subjective. An examination of these criteria shows that many of them could be used in filtering, in addition to subject-based mechanisms, and that they might be particularly useful for systems with multiple sources because they can provide a useful filter that is not based on the subject domain

    Abstract
More and more libraries are providing access to Web resources through OCLC's (Online Computer Resource Center) Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC) and, by extension, OCLC's WorldCat database. The ability to use a database to its maximum potential depends upon understanding what a database contains and the guidelines for its construction. This study examines the characteristics of Web resources in CORC in terms of their subject matter, the source of the content, publication patterns, and the units of information chosen for representation in the database. The majority of the 414 resources in the sample belonged to the social sciences. Academic libraries and government agencies contributed more than 90% of the records for resources in the sample. Using the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2d edition (AACR2) definitions for publication patterns that are part of the upcoming 2002 amendments reveals that nearly half of the sample fell into the category of integrating resources. Identifying units of representation of the resources described was more difficult. Existing definitions for Web units in development are not adequate to describe all of the resources in the sample. In addition, there is wide variability in the units of representation chosen for inclusion by the libraries contributing records, resulting in little predictability in what units of information might be found in the database.

    Abstract
This article presents an exploratory study of Blobgects, an experimental interface for an online museum catalog that enables social tagging and blogging activity around a set of cultural heritage objects held by a preeminent museum of anthropology and archaeology. This study attempts to understand not just whether social tagging and commenting about these objects is useful but rather whose tags and voices matter in presenting different expert perspectives around digital museum objects. Based on an empirical comparison between two different user groups (Canadian Inuit high-school students and museum studies students in the United States), we found that merely adding the ability to tag and comment to the museum's catalog does not sufficiently allow users to learn about or engage with the objects represented by catalog entries. Rather, the specialist language of the catalog provides too little contextualization for users to enter into the sort of dialog that proponents of Web 2.0 technologies promise. Overall, we propose a more nuanced application of Web 2.0 technologies within museums - one which provides a contextual basis that gives users a starting point for engagement and permits users to make sense of objects in relation to their own needs, uses, and understandings.

    Abstract
The following chapters are based upon notes of several unconnected lectures addressed to audiences of very different classes in the theatres of the Royal Institution, the London Institution, the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, and Caius House, Battersea. In preparing the notes for publication the matter has been re-arranged with the object of presenting it, as far as might be, in methodical order; additions and omissions have been freely made, and numerous diagrams, illustrative of the apparatus and experiments described, have been provided. I do not know that any apology is needed for offering the collection as thus re-modelled to a larger public. Though the essays are, for the most part, of a popular and informal character, they touch upon a number of curious matters of which no readily accessible account has yet appeared, while, even in the most elementary parts, an attempt has been made to handle the subject with some degree of freshness. The interesting subjective phenomena which are associated with the sense of vision do not appear to have received in this country the attention they deserve. This little book may perhaps be of some slight service in suggesting to experimentalists, both professional and amateur, an attractive field of research which has hitherto been only partially explored.
