    Offene Fragen Bewahrheiten sich also die berühmten Experimente Benjamin Libets? Dieser Hirnforscher fand schon in den 80er-Jahren heraus, dass die mit einer willentlichen Entscheidung assoziierte Gehirnaktivität - das sogenannte Bereitschaftspotential - entdeckt werden kann, bevor man sich überhaupt bewusst ist, eine Entscheidung getroffen zu haben. Libets Versuchsteilnehmer mussten feststellen, wann sie den Impuls zu einer spontanen Bewegung eines Fingers verspürten - eine schwierige Aufgabe, weil sie sich im Moment ihrer Absicht die Position eines leuchtenden Punktes auf dem Bildschirm eines Computers merken mussten, der sich wie der Sekundenzeiger einer Uhr im Kreise bewegte, nur ungefähr hundert mal schneller. Anscheinend waren sich die Probanden ihrer Absicht eine Fünftel Sekunde vor Beginn einer Bewegung bewusst, etwas später als das Bereitschaftspotenzial, das auf der Kopfhaut über dem Stirnhirn registriert wurde. Allerdings sei die Kausalitätsbeziehung zwischen besagter Hirntätigkeit und Wille eine noch offene Frage, betonte damals der Züricher Hirnforscher Konrad Akert und hatte recht. Die Münchener Psychologen Patrick Haggard und Martin Eimer erkannten nämlich, dass das Bereitschaftspotential gar nicht die eigentliche Ursache für das Bewusstwerden einer Entscheidung sein könne, etwa der Absicht, einen Finger der linken oder der rechten Hand zu krümmen. Ursache sei vermutlich ein anderes Hirnpotential (bzw. die damit verbundenen neuronalen Prozesse), das mit der bewussten Wahrnehmung der Absicht beinahe zusammenfalle. Es handelt sich um das sogenannte lateralisierte Bereitschaftspotential, Hirnströme, die in den Versuchen von Haggard und Eimer (nur) wenige Zehntelsekunden vor einer bewussten Wahrnehmung der Intention einer Fingerbewegung registriert werden konnten.

    An approach to establishing a relationship between knowing, informing and representing, using aspects of linguistic theory to clarify semantic theory as the basis for an overall theory of meaning. Linguistic knowledge is based on a conceptual matrix which defines convergence / divergence of the categories used to specify an object's parameters; work on the analysis of discourse emphasisis the social dimension of meaning, which is the basis of the theory of acts and speech.     Abstract
    Fast nichts ist uns Menschen so wichtig wie unser subjektives, bewusstes Innenleben - und doch wissen wir relativ wenig über seine Genese. Benjamin Libet gehört zu den Pionieren auf dem Gebiet der Bewusstseinsforschung und hat zahlreiche Experimente durchgeführt, die gezeigt haben, wie das Gehirn Bewusstsein produziert. In seinem 2004 erschienenen und jetzt auf Deutsch vorliegenden Buch Mind Time präsentiert er erstmals eine eigene Deutung seiner berühmten »Libet-Experimente«, die die aktuelle Debatte über die Bedeutung der Hirnforschung für unser Menschenbild überhaupt erst angestoßen haben. Im Zentrum der Experimente steht der Nachweis, dass jedem bewussten Prozess ein unbewusster, jedoch messbarer Prozess zeitlich vorausgeht. Diese zeitliche Differenz - die »Mind Time« - lässt den Schluss zu, dass unbewusste Prozesse in unserem Gehirn unser Bewusstsein steuern, und nicht umgekehrt das Bewusstsein »Herr im Haus« ist. Die vermeintlich freien Willensakte etwa sind längst initiiert, bevor uns ein Handlungswunsch überhaupt gegenwärtig ist. Libet behandelt die weitreichenden Folgen seiner Entdeckung nicht nur für die Willensfreiheit, sondern auch für die Identität der Person und die Beziehung zwischen Geist und Gehirn. Klar und verständlich dargestellt, ermöglichen Libets Experimente und Theorien es sowohl Spezialisten als auch interessierten Laien, an einem der spannendsten Forschungsprogramme dieser Tage teilzuhaben - der Erforschung des menschlichen Bewusstseins.

    Abstract
    Current digital preservation is strongly biased towards data objects: digital files of document-style objects, or encapsulated and largely self-contained objects. To provide authenticity and provenance information, comprehensive metadata models are deployed to document information on an object's context. Yet, we claim that simply documenting an objects context may not be sufficient to ensure proper provenance and to fulfill the stated preservation goals. Specifically in e-Science and business settings, capturing, documenting and preserving entire processes may be necessary to meet the preservation goals. We thus present an approach for capturing, documenting and preserving processes, and means to assess their authenticity upon re-execution. We will discuss options as well as limitations and open challenges to achieve sound preservation, speci?cally within scientific processes.

    Abstract
    In the first part of this article the author defines the n-overlap vector whose coordinates consist of the fraction of the objects (e.g., books, N-grams, etc.) that belong to 1, 2, , n sets (more generally: families) (e.g., libraries, databases, etc.). With the aid of the Lorenz concentration theory, a theory of n-overlap similarity is conceived together with corresponding measures, such as the generalized Jaccard index (generalizing the well-known Jaccard index in case n 5 2). Next, the distributional form of the n-overlap vector is determined assuming certain distributions of the object's and of the set (family) sizes. In this section the decreasing power law and decreasing exponential distribution is explained for the n-overlap vector. Both item (token) n-overlap and source (type) n-overlap are studied. The n-overlap properties of objects indexed by a hierarchical system (e.g., books indexed by numbers from a UDC or Dewey system or by N-grams) are presented in the final section. The author shows how the results given in the previous section can be applied as well as how the Lorenz order of the n-overlap vector is respected by an increase or a decrease of the level of refinement in the hierarchical system (e.g., the value N in N-grams).
