    Abstract
The introduction of digital resources has not only had considerable impact on the role of libraries in the information society, but it has also had a remarkable effect on back office procedures, i.e. on the way the library is organised. This article presents a case study of a reengineering process at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) in Munich, Germany, the central regional library of the State of Bavaria and one of the largest academic research libraries in Europe with local, regional and supraregional responsibilities. Due to the multiple roles of this library, it was particularly important not only to bridge the gap between traditional and new material, but also to create a flexible organisational platform for the various tasks at the different levels indicated.

    Abstract
Metadata and information technology staff in libraries that are building digital collections typically extract and manipulate MARC metadata sets to provide access to digital content via non-MARC schemes. Metadata processing in these libraries involves defining the relationships between metadata schemes, moving metadata between schemes, and coordinating the intellectual activity and physical resources required to create and manipulate metadata. Actively managing the non-MARC metadata resources used to build digital collections is something most of these libraries have only begun to do. This article proposes strategies for managing MARC metadata repurposing efforts as the first step in a coordinated approach to library metadata management. Guided by lessons learned from Cornell University library mapping and transformation activities, the authors apply the literature of data resource management to library metadata management and propose a model for managing MARC metadata repurposing processes through the implementation of a metadata management design.

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discuss the challenges involved in collecting and managing digital photographs and provide advice for librarians in appraising, formulating collection development policies, and negotiating gifts of digital photographs. Design/methodology/approach - The ideas in the article are based on author's work with digital photographs at Washington State University and research for a workshop taught through the OCLC Western office on digital photograph collections including long term preservation and management. Findings - By careful appraisal of digital photographs including the consideration of image format, descriptive and technical metadata, and the development of collection development policies, library professionals will ensure that they develop viable collections of digital photographs. Practical implications - The paper is a very commonsense guide for librarians and visual image curators who are charged to manage and develop collections of digital photographs. Originality/value - Though there is a vast literature relating to creating in-house library digital collections, issues relating to digital photograph collection development are not yet available in the professional literature.

    Abstract
Presents the results of a study, carried out by The Marc Fresko Consultancy, Kenley, UK, to explore the availability of digital information worldwide and intended to be of use to the Britsh Library, as it moves towards the provision of more services based on digital data storage. The study involved a series of interlocking surveys and reports details of over 200 digital data sources with descriptions, in varying degrees of detail, which are extensively indexed in 4 separate idexes. Concludes that the universe of digital sources is too large to be quantified usefully and recommends that any future work be focused on specific areas of interst. Suggests a number of possible future actions: listing sources in areas of interest; promoting or facilitating good archiving parctices for digital collections; and providing access to digital collections at the British Library

    Abstract
Considers the problem of applying standard concepts of cataloguing and bibliographic control to electronic media by studying the degree of fit between the Standford Integrated Digital Library Project (SDLP) and both the USMARC format and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Notes the lack of fit of both USMARC and TEI but stresses the advantages of the latter due its lack of dependency on 3 digit tags and its use of SGML conventions

    Abstract
RLG has used METS for a particular application, that is as a wrapper for structural metadata. When RLG cultural materials was launched, there was no single way to deal with "complex digital objects". METS provides a standard means of encoding metadata regarding the digital objects represented in RCM, and METS has now been fully integrated into the workflow for this service.

Discusses whether an institutional life can be built upon patterns of digital communication, and if it would resemble that founded on print technologies. considers whether the architecture of digital texts and virtual spaces is capable of creating a sense of place in the way that library architecture does, exploring the character of cyberspace as a public place within which participation in an intellectual community or civic life might be created and nurtured

    Abstract
The World Civilizations Image Repository (WCIR) and Photos Online are two collaborative image database projects under way at the Washington State University (WSU) Libraries. These projects demonstrate how the WSU Libraries have employed OCLC/DiMeMa's (Digital Media Management) CONTENTdm in partnership with other University departments to develop visual collections free from copyright restrictions, as well as to manage "born digital" images on a collaborative basis.

    Abstract
In this presentation, we therefore focus on a solution for providing uniform access to Digital Libraries and other online services. In order to enable uniform query access to heterogeneous sources, we must provide metadata interoperability in a way that a query language - in this case SPARQL - can cope with the incompatibility of the metadata in various sources without changing their already existing information models.

    Abstract
All types of information can be referenced to a geographic place. Maps, aerial photographs, and remote sensing images are spatially georeferenced. Other forms of information such as books, articles, research papers, pieces of music, and art are often linked to a geographic location through place names (geographic names). A gazetteer (a dictionary of geographic names) that is spatially referenced itself provides the bridge between these two types of georeferencing. With a georeferenced gazetteer translation service, a user can start with a geographic name and find information that is described with either geographic names or with geospatial coordinates. Use of this powerful indirect geospatially referencing tool can be applied as a common approach to libraries, bibliographic files, data centers, web resources, and museum and specimen collections and can be particular useful across language barriers since latitude and longitude coordinates are universally understood. The Alexandria Digital Library has implemented a gazetteer component for its georeferenced digital library. This experience resulted in the creation of a Gazetteer Content Standard, a Feature Type Thesaurus, and an operational interactive gazetteer service. This paper describes the development of these components and illustrates the use of this tool in a georeferenced digital library. It also relates progress in working with Federal agencies and others toward developing shareable gazetteer data through Digital Gazetteer Information Exchange programs
