    Abstract
    The article is a tribute to Magda Heiner-Freiling's activities concerning subject indexing, revolving particularly around her time as Head of Subject Cataloguing at the German National Library. It shows that her differentiated understanding of the manifold tasks of cataloguers relating to subject indexing is pathbreaking for the future of Subject Cataloguing in modern libraries.
