    Abstract
The three phases of the development of LC subject headings are surveyed. The inconsistent and not highly effective practices of the past, or Cutterism, should be put aside in favor of standardization or codism. But codism is not an end in itself. It is just a prelude to the ultimate goal - consumerism, or keeping the needs of the library user at the forefront

    Abstract
Four policy proposals are made for Library of Congress subject headings affecting geographic areas: consistency of form of place names in subjects; consistency and completeness of period subdivisions under place names; automatic Ge of place names as initial elements in map subject cataloging; and abandonment of the (May Subd Geog) concept in favor or clearer and more accurate notations.

    Abstract
Considers the effectiveness of standard methods of subject access to online catalogues in US libraries, with emphasis on the LCSH and the ease with which end users can manage without the assistance of library intermediaries. Concludes that the most satisfactory option would be a revised form of the LCSH

    Abstract
Recounts the efforts throughout the 1980s to promote the idea of a subject heading code and revisions to LC subject haedings. Describes the current situation of stasis. The Library of Congress has announced no comprehensive plan for LC Subject Headings, and it is unclear whether the concept of standardisation will be embraced

    Abstract
Examines the 2 major schemes for transliteration or Romanization of Chinese into English: Wade-Giles and Pinyin. Concludes that both methods are about equally effective, but since most of the rest of the world is now using Pinyin, the Library of Congress should, for practical reasons, switch to Pinyin

    Abstract
Claims that there is no clear plan, comprehensive philosophy, or macro approach to the revision of Library of Congress Subject Headings. Having missed a great opportunity in the mid-1980s to develop a subject analog of AACR2, LC is now in a period of decline. Discusses alternatives to LC subject access such as PRECIS and keyword searching. Urges LC to halt and reverse the decline by bold, decisive action in the 1990s

    Abstract
4 policy proposals are presented which affect the Library of Congress (LC's) subject headings for the social sciences: clarification of the use of disciplines versus topics; clarification of the meaning and usage of the subdivision Civilisation, use of Law and legislation as a free-floating subdivision; and some suggestions for dealing with controversial social topics.

    Abstract
Libraries using the LCSH can increase the effectiveness of their subject access. This can be accomplished through one of four methods for applying an increased number of headings: the addition of subject headings in situations where none have been supplied by LC; the use of pattern secondary headings; the use of major + minor techniques; and the use of minor + major techniques. Each of these methods will provide additional subject access to supplement that produced by the Library of Congress
