    Reliability and authenticity determine the credibility and usefulness of information. These concepts, developed in different cultures and at different times, are essential for information society and its dependence on trusting information.     Navigation is a limited metaphor for hypermedia and website use that potentially constraints our understanding of human-computer interaction. Traces the emergence of the navigation metaphor and the emprical analysis of navigation measures in usability evaluation before suggesting an alternative concept to consider: shape. The shape concept affords a richer analytic tool for considering humans' use of digital documents and invokes social level analysis of meaning that are shared among discourse communities who both produce and consume the information resources

    Abstract
    Reports on a survey of teenagers at a school in Edinburgh, Scotland, conducted as part of the Household Information System (HIS) project at Queen Margaret College. HIS has attempted to apply organizational models of information management to non organizational contexts such as households. Information management concepts have also been complemented by reference to research from sociology and media and cultural studies into the domestic consumption of technologies. Previous HIS research has suggested that notions of technological convergence proposed by producers and suppliers of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are not shared by consumers who prefer to keep their television and computing devioces separate. Television is most often associated with relaxation and entertainment, computing with work and education. However, there is some evidence that expertise with regard to new ICTs is the province of children rather than adults in many homes, a trend which may indicate as inversion of traditional patterns of knowledge dispersal in adult child relationships

    Library science has no strong scientific image bacause it lacks a consistent theoretical framework. The key element is information, information is knowlegde, and library science is knowledge in the service of society. Society itself is sustained by development, information and ideology, with information as the transforming element. Because of the universal need for information, library science is increasingly valued. The great problem is to delimit the object of study because of its vast area of application. The goals of library science are utopian, bound up with making information available to everyone in the best possible way.     There are in creased opportunities for disinformation and misinformation to occur on the Internet and for students, faculty, and others to unknowingly reference them. The extent of inaccurary over the Internet was investigated in 1994 by means of a questionnaire involving 16 participants which covered: individuals' views on the accuracy of information available through the Internet; their reactions to the creation of disinformation and misinformation; their awareness of instances of disinformation and misinformation on the Internet; and their views on the official or authentic version or dource.     Technological changes are occuring rapidly and students entering colleges are bringing very disparate computer skills and attitudes. Some students are reluctant to embrace new technologies, others demand electronic resources for all assignments. By considering the computer access and Internet resources available to elementary school students today, it is possible to imagine what tomorrow's users will expect from libraries. Although college students may arrive at libraries with increased computer skills, their knowledge of electronic information may be lacking.     Abstract
    At a time when competition for scarce resources is tougher than ever, policy makers, decision makers, and information specialists alike, can no longer be satisfied with general assumptions which describe the role of information in the achievement of individual, organizational and societal goals as being 'a critical resource'. An international project called 'Impact of the information on development' is carried out by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC, Canada) with a view to test suitable apporaches for the assessment of the benefits derived from all types of information activities in the devloping countries. This effort aims at assembling more solid evidence of the benefits associated with information. Presents the rationale for the project and its progress to date. Discusses the main features of the suggested problem and its progress to date. Discusses the main features of the suggested problem and constituency centred approach to impact assessment. Future developments,in the project call for the establishment of a decentralized research network. While the IDRC project has to be focused exclusively on developing countries, the issues raised are infact of universal significance.     Abstract
    It is argued that the current generation of online catalogues do not meet basic user expectations about how to search for information. After a brief examination of virtual reality and its associated technology, a new form of online catalogue, the 'virtual reality library' is proposed. Users browse an information space, a computer-controlled set of shelf orderings for items. Its form, workings and design are investigated in detail. The concept of the virtual reality library is then applied to information resources which either have no physical repository or have one which is not accessible to users
