    Abstract
Provides illustrative examples of the methods, tools and resources that enable librarians, information specialists and end users to make the most of the WWW. The 4 key factors that facilitate access are location, evaluation, organization and communication. Outlines how a number of sistes make use of these factors. Describes: the Internet Library for Librarians, Argus Clearinghouse's Digital Librarian's Award; FEDSTATS, the University Library System, chines University of Hong Kong, the WWW Virtual Library, the Finnish Virtual Library Project, and BIBNET

    Abstract
Describes German projects forming the basis of digital research libraries with specific examples from the WEBIS project; the SSG-Fachinformationsprojekt; the MEDOC project; the concept of new information structures for science through the Association of German Mathematicians (DMV), Physicists (DPG), Chemists and Computer Scientists as well as the WEBDOC project. Discusses the area of information of a digital library; the development of shared digital holdings; the boundary between free access to subscribers and commercial publishing products; and standardisation of the document format

    Abstract
Compares and contrasts the essential differences between traditional and digital information media, reexamines the role of OPACs, refines the definition of library catalogues, and advocates the addition of Internet resources within the OPAC. Describes the building of the Alex Catalog, as part of the Alcuin Project at North Carolina State University, a catalogue of Internet resources in the format of MARC format records. Concludes with a process for integrating the further inclusion of other Internet resources into OPACs as well as some of the obstacles such a process manifests

    Abstract
All types of information can be referenced to a geographic place. Maps, aerial photographs, and remote sensing images are spatially georeferenced. Other forms of information such as books, articles, research papers, pieces of music, and art are often linked to a geographic location through place names (geographic names). A gazetteer (a dictionary of geographic names) that is spatially referenced itself provides the bridge between these two types of georeferencing. With a georeferenced gazetteer translation service, a user can start with a geographic name and find information that is described with either geographic names or with geospatial coordinates. Use of this powerful indirect geospatially referencing tool can be applied as a common approach to libraries, bibliographic files, data centers, web resources, and museum and specimen collections and can be particular useful across language barriers since latitude and longitude coordinates are universally understood. The Alexandria Digital Library has implemented a gazetteer component for its georeferenced digital library. This experience resulted in the creation of a Gazetteer Content Standard, a Feature Type Thesaurus, and an operational interactive gazetteer service. This paper describes the development of these components and illustrates the use of this tool in a georeferenced digital library. It also relates progress in working with Federal agencies and others toward developing shareable gazetteer data through Digital Gazetteer Information Exchange programs

    Abstract
The Cheshire II system was originally developed to provide a bridge from conventional online library catalogs to full-text online resources. Recently we have begun using the system to implement full-text and fielded searching of bibliographic information for the UC Berkeley Digital Library Initiative project sponsored by NSF, NASA and ARPA. The Cheshire system is also being used to provide scalable performance for image querying using the "Blobworld" image representation. This paper will review the characteristics of the Cheshire II system and examine its performance and behavior when applied to a collection of large full-text documents in the TREC Interactive Retrieval Track and its performance in Blobworld image searching

    Abstract
Reports on a 3 day conference organized by the UK Office for Library and Information Networking (UKOLN), at the University of Bath. This attempted to demonstrate that the information (super) highway has now become an information landscape, owing to the increasingly pervasive influence of digital and electronic information. Future roles of the information profession within this new landscape were examined, as well as new partnerships; metadata; the learning society; the role od the voluntary sector; and digitization

    Abstract
Presents the findings of the South Ayrshire Libraries OPen Learning and the Internet project, Sep 1997 to Oct 1998. The objective was to demonstrate how open learning materials available on the Internet could be integrated with the provision of local open learning resources to provide an enhanced learning environment in public libraries. The main areas of concentration within the project were information skills support to public library users and the provision of WWW based independent materials to learners. The organisation and retrieval of Web based resources for local use was a major issue throughout the project. Recommends the adoption of Dublin Core metadata standards, the connection of databases of resources with searchable wen pages, and the development of thesauri of terms used to index the Web based resources locally. Sstaff training, and the new skills which will need to be developed, were identified as issues. Cost was also identified as a related issue, extending to issues such as access to open learning material and the Internet

    Abstract
In the period, 1996 to 1997, the Flemish government, Belgium, connected its complete public library system to the Internet. Describes the 3 steps involved in the project: technical connection and installation; training of library staff; and the development of BIBnet, a Web site for public libraries

    Abstract
Proposes that librarians use their traditional skills developed for reviewing the quality and value of print materials in the new environment of the WWW to evaluate web sites. Notes the work of the Infofilter project (http://www.kcpl.lib.mo.us/infofilter.htm) which has been attempting to do this. Argues that the current 'web reviewing' sources are of little value, and do not adhere to standards of quality. Discusses characteristics of the Web which make it quite different from print materials, especially the interactivity and collaboration which it promotes, and gives examples of these
