    Abstract
Project Jefferson was designed to help new students at the University of Southern California (USC) to acquire skills necessary for writing research papers through the example of research into ethical issues raised by the US Constitution. It runs on Macintosh Computers and is based on Apple Computer's HyperCard, a system wich allows users to browse different sources of information at their own pace and along their own routes while noting down useful discoveries in the notebook part of the system. Access to USC's locally mounted bibliographic data bases is also given without any tedious logging-on routines.

    Abstract
The study assessed the ability of children to categorise concepts that will be used to organise an information retrieval interface. The work was done of Project SEED (Science for Early Educational Development), a project to develop hands-on science programmes for elementary schools. Aims to tailor an interface to the particular skills of children in organising science knowledge. The results are promising for the design of IR interfaces based on children's abilities to manipulate information.

    Abstract
A research project at Middlesex Polytechnic is examning the problems of subject access in an OPAC. A series of user studies have been carried out which examined students' use of existing catalogue facilities, which in turn led to the experimental evaluation of various interface designs for an online catalogue. The experiments were primarily concerned with the effect of the following variables on the speed and accuracy of retrieval of specific items, the use of colour, the speed of presentation of information, the amount of information on a screen, the paging and scrolling of information, the position of a sought item within a list
