    Abstract
Reports results of the work of a new member of the ELINOR project team to review the development taking place in Z39.50 networked information retrieval protocol with a view to bringing the University's electronic library pilot systems, including ELINOR and the online catalogue into a single, unified system. Focuses particularly on the WWW client server environment

    Abstract
This article first compares and contrasts the essential, fundamental differences between traditional and digital information mediums. It then reexamines the role of the online public access catalog (OPAC), refines the definition of library's catalog, and advocates the addition of Internet resources within the OPAC. Next, the article describes the building of the Alex Catalog, a catalog of Internet resources in the in the form of MARC records. Finally, this article outlines a process of integrating the futher inclusion of other Internet resources into OPACs as well as some of the obstacles such a process manifests.

    Abstract
Rules regarding cataloguing, subject headings, the way information in bibliographic records is organised and the catalogue's interface, or the way the screen is set up, are barriers to the use of online catalogues by children Describes the background to and implementation of a project to create a child orientation catalogue with a graphical user interface, or one that relies on pictures instead of text, within Denver Public Library in Colorado. Now called the Kid's catalog and commercially available from the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries Co., the catalogue's software acts as a front end to a library's regular catalogue

    Abstract
Within the SOKRATES project Bavarian state, university and regional libraries are being equipped with locally automated systems. Regensburg university library has piloted the SISIS-OPAC-ONL version 1.0, adapted from the SINIX-based software SISIS-SE, with a machine readable stock of 1,66 million titles. OPAC-ONL offers 3 retrieval functions of different grades. Tests have been approved by Bavarian state libraries provided that certain faults are rectified statewide use of the OPAC should follow

    Abstract
Describes the availability, use and value of Z39.50, an international standard which allows a librarian accessing a database on one computer platform to search an OPAC hosted on another computer with a totally different database structure. Experiences of those working with the standard are given, and its use by the European Union IRIS project to link 6 major Irish research libraries is examined. Despite some problems encountered with different forms of author cataloguing and possible competition from the WWW, the standard is seen as possessing considerable strengths, for example in searching different catalogues and presenting the results in a standard format on screen, which justify the continuing interest of librarians

    Abstract
Describes the Phoenix Metro Image Project which is the linking by 3 major institutions in a major metropolitan area of 3 different OPACs over the Internet. The institutions are Arizona State Univ., the Maricopa County Community Colleges District and Phoenix Public Library, and the project is designed to be a model for other automated library consortia

    Abstract
Examines the use of the Z39.50 Information Retrieval protocol for provision of access to its collections. Z39.50 offers a translation of different search engines developed by library systems suppliers and online database hosts. Traces its development and describes its abstraction and metalanguage, and the TCP/IP and OSI layer. It is being further developed in project ONE - OPAC Network in Europe, and European Union Library Plan project which began in Jan 95, of which the British Library is a partner. It aims to link national library catalogues in an open standards and telecommunications network, and to achieve interoperability by use of Z39.50. Describes the project so far, agreements made, and future developments

    Abstract
The library, centre of the local network of educational, social and cultural establishments, introduced its multimedia catalogue in 1994. Records assessed by graphic interfaces include all documents and supports: users can call up accompanying text, images, audiovisual extracts, using a series of simple menus. For the librarians, maintaining the catalogue, converting documents into digital form and creating links is time consuming and needs special skills, but the impact on collection use and enhancement of the library's image are considerable, while the availability of digital copies helps conserve fragile documents

    Abstract
Describes a project concerning the monitoring of the OPACs of Helsinki University of Technology Library, Danish Technological Library, and the Norway Technical Library. The project aimed to promote end use accessibility to information in OPACs by gathering valid information about the user interaction with theses systems. Information was gathered by analysing the transaction logs recorded in the various OPACs

    Abstract
Describes the Mercury project, at Carnegie Mellon Univ. Library, Pennsylvania, aimed at extending the scope of the OPAC to include other functions and services: access to full text and other online databases. The collection of databases (e.g. INSPEC, IBI/INFORM) forms the Library Information Systems (LIS2) and is accessible via a common user interface. Describes the distributed computer architecture of the Mercury electronic library with particular note of the document delivery service built into the system and designed to produce electronic documents in ASCII and bitmapped page image format, and in hardcopy format using electronic mail and print services. Pays particular attention to the principles underlying the design of the user interface and gives examples of the UNIX/Motif and VT100 search screens

    Abstract
Describes a project which undertook extensive semi structured interviews with future users of an online catalogue as part of the design phase of the catalogue. The interviews focused on users' reading habits, information use and needs, computer experience, and library and catalogue use experience

    Abstract
In 1991-92 the users of the National Technology Library of Denmark, the Helsinki Univ. of Technology Library, and the Technical Univ. Library of Norway were monitored to evaluate the way in which they usef the OPACs. The aim of the NORDINFO project was to promote end user accessibility by gathering valid information about the interaction between the users and the 3 systems. The main emphasis was on how the different types of users actually carry out their searches with special attention paid to multilingualism. Transaction log analysis was used to monitor the search process

    Abstract
Library users continue to experience difficulty in using the online catalog, particularly in the area of subject access. This project describes a test of a new design for subject access to online catalogs. The new design requires a wide range of subject searching capabilities and search trees to govern the system's selection of searching capabilities in response to user queries. Is the performance of search trees superior to subject searching approaches chosen at random? This project is geared to make that determination

    Abstract
OPAC Network in Europe (ONE) is a project aimed at providing users with better ways to access library OPACs and national catalogues and which will stimulate and facilitate internetworking between libraries in Europe. The project is based on SR/Z39.50 standards which enable users to search widely different computer systems across networks and offer end users the promise of greater ease of use through a solution to the proliferation of different user interfaces to library catalogues

    Abstract
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic has been providing audio recordings of educational texts since 1948. In 1992, it initiated a project to develop an OPAC to allow institutional providers and individual borrowers to search its holdings of over 80.000 volumes. In 1993, a coordinated pilot project was begun to allow a limited test group of institutional sites and individuals the ability to use the catalogue ordering mechanism for document delivery. Describes the project concluding that, although the project was not considered a success, much insight was gained as a result of the efforts which will be of value in the development of an improved version of the OPAC
