    Abstract
    Report of a survey 96 (out of 119) US and Canadian member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to determine their use of on-line and CD-ROM data bases, including OPACs. 4 catalogues were identified: on-line mediated searching (97%); CD-ROMs (96%); end-user on-line searching (45%); and locally mounted magnetic tapes (37,5%). The latter option is expected to be the most widely used option in the new future. Although CD-ROM caused some migration from on-line, most migration was from printed sources to CD-ROM. Tables show: on-line hosts most used for intermediary on-line searching; on-line data bases most after searched by intermediaries; end user on-line systems offered by most libraries; the 20 most popular CD-ROM data bases; and the 8 magnetic tape data bases accessible on OPACs

    Abstract
    Reports the findings of an experiment designed to compare on-line data bases and equivalent printed versions in 1 area of reference services, the answering of ready reference questions. 68 reference librarians searched for answers to the same set of 12 questions using either print or on-line sources. Details of the questions are given. In the case of conceptual questions on-line proved faster than print, particularly for 2-concept questions, and the increased speed was not at the expense of accuracy. In the case of factual questions, print sources proved to be considerably faster than on-line. Suggests 2 guidelines: when bibliographic information is available in both print and on-line formats, on-line should be the tool of choice, particularly for multi-concept questions; simple factul questions can be answered more quickly using printed sources.

    Abstract
    TOSCANA is a computer program which allows an online interaction with larger data bases to analyse and explore data conceptually. It uses labelled line diagrams of concept lattices to communicate knowledge coded in given data. The basic problem to create online presentations of concept lattices is solved by composing prepared diagrams to nested line diagrams. A larger number of applications in different areas have already shown that TOSCANA is a useful tool for many purposes

    Abstract
    The PRO-CITE and BIBLIO-LINK software packages make the process of compiling bibliographies and internal data bases much easier than when all the steps in the process were manual (compiling, typing). The 2 programs work on records that have been downloaded from on-line data bases. BIBLIO-LINK analyses the downloaded records to determine document type and stores the data in the appropriate PRO-CITE workform, putting fields from the downloaded record into the correct PRO-CITE fields.

    Abstract
    A method is outlined which would permit a large number of libraries of all types to use centralised cataloguing facilities without the need for their own automatic data processing equipment and outlay. The method is seen as an alternative to the OCLC on-line data bank, and permits the ordering of printed catalogue cards by machine-readable but hand-prepared data cards, such as the loan cards which readers at the Münster library are at present required to complete.     Abstract
    With formal concept analysis surveys are analyzable in the way that a meaningful picture of the answers of the interviewed persons is available. Line diagrams of large concept lattices might become less readable up to the point that it is impossible to pursue the line segments with the eyes. Nested line diagrams give the opportunity to overcome these difficulties. The main idea of nested line diagrams is to partition the line diagram into boxes so that line segments between two boxes are all parallel and may be replaced by one line segment. The possibility to draw line diagrams with more than two factors does allow it to describe concept lattices with many hundred or thousand concepts in a clear structure.     Paper presented at a symposium on 'Implementing the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT): Controlled Vocabulary in the Extended MARC format', held at the 1989 Annual Conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America. The only way to get bibliographic records on to campus on-line library catalogues, and slide records on the national bibliographic utilities, is through the use of MARC. Discusses the importance of having individual slide and photograph records on the national bibliographic utilities, and considers the obstacles which currently make this difficult. Discusses mapping to MARC from data base management systems.

    Abstract
    A known-item search for abstracts to previously retrieved references revealed that 2 documents from the same annual volume had been indexed twice. Working from the premise that the whole volume may have been double-indexed, a search strategy was devised that limited the journal code to the year in question. 57 references were retrieved, comprising 28 pairs of duplicates plus a citation for the whole volume. Author, title, source and descriptors were requested off-line and the citations were paired with their duplicates. The 4 categories of descriptors-major descriptors, minor descriptors, subheadings and check-tags-were compared for depth and consistency of indexing and lessons that might be learnt from the study are discussed.

    Abstract
    The Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia has been mounting SGML full-text databases on-line since 1992, and actively building a user community around this Internet resource. Conceiving of what we do as firmly a library operation, we have sought to integrate the electronic text databases into the training, cataloging, preservation, and collection development areas of our library. Central to our selection criteria is the desire for softwareand platform-independent textsif it's not SGML, it's ephermeraland central to our cataloging endeavors is on SGML bibliographic record such as the Text Encoding Initiative header.

    Abstract
    BLAISE-LINE provides online access to all of the British Library's major catalogues as well as to other major bibliographies. With its MARC records, Dewey numbers and Library of Congress headings (LCSH), BLAISE-LINE remains a tradtional library oriented online service. Presents the results of a survey of 37 libraries using BLAISE-LINE to find out what users thought of it and how it compared to the more modern systems of enduser, fulltext, CD-ROM and the Internet. The principal uses to which respondents put BLAISE-LINE were bibliographical checking, answering subject enquiries, and obtaining interlibrary loans. The survey also covered frequency of use, ease of use, problems in using the system, cost issues, and training and support. Findings show that professional librarians value the efficiency of BLAISE-LINE above the user friedliness of other systems
