    Abstract
    The aim of the research undertaken was to get to know the degree of implementation of discovery tools in university libraries in the Iberian Peninsula. It also allowed an initial evaluation of the facilities offered by the tools implemented. With regard to the presence of discovery tools we find a different situation in the two countries, with a higher degree of implementation in Spain. As for the behaviour of the discovery layers, the eight tools evaluated performed appropriately. Discovery tools represent a considerable advance. The combining of the library's catalogue and indexes to articles with other sources of information in a single unified interface is an unquestionable improvement. However, catalogues and databases still fulfil some purposes better than discovery tools. Libraries need to consider their clients when putting up on their websites the various tools for gaining access to contents.

    Abstract
    Latent semantic indexing (LSI) is a statistical technique for improving information retrieval effectiveness. Here, we use LSI to assist in literature-based discoveries. The idea behind literature-based discoveries is that different authors have already published certain underlying scientific ideas that, when taken together, can be connected to hypothesize a new dicovery, and that these connections can be made by exploring the scientific literature. We explore latent semantic indexing's effectiveness on 2 discovery processes: uncovering 'nearby' relationships that are necessary to initiate the literature based discovery process; and discovering more distant relationships that may genuinely generate new discovery hypotheses

    Abstract
    Reports a computational model of George Boole's discovery of logic as part of mathematics. Studies the different historical factors that influences this theory, and produces a computational representation of Boole's logic before it was mathematized, and a production system, BOOLE2, that rediscovers logic as a science that behaves exactly as a branch of mathematics, and that thus validates to some extent the historical explanation. The system's discovery methods are found to be general enough to handle 3 other cases: 2 version of a geometry due to a contemporary of Boole, and a small subset of the differential calculus

    Abstract
    Purpose A new approach to investigate serendipitous knowledge discovery (SKD) of health information is developed and tested to evaluate the information flow-serendipitous knowledge discovery (IF-SKD) model. The purpose of this paper is to determine the degree to which IF-SKD reflects physicians' information behaviour in a clinical setting and explore how the information system, Spark, designed to support physicians' SKD, meets its goals. Design/methodology/approach The proposed pre-experimental study design employs an adapted version of the McCay-Peet's (2013) and McCay-Peet et al.'s (2015) serendipitous digital environment (SDE) questionnaire research tool to address the complexity associated with defining the way in which SKD is understood and applied in system design. To test the IF-SKD model, the new data analysis approach combining confirmatory factor analysis, data imputation and Monte Carlo simulations was developed. Findings The piloting of the proposed novel analysis approach demonstrated that small sample information behaviour survey data can be meaningfully examined using a confirmatory factor analysis technique. Research limitations/implications This method allows to improve the reliability in measuring SKD and the generalisability of findings. Originality/value This paper makes an original contribution to developing and refining methods and tools of research into information-system-supported serendipitous discovery of information by health providers.

    Abstract
    First generation scholarly research on the Web lacked a firm system of authority control. Second generation Web research is beginning to model subject access with library science principles of bibliographic control and cataloguing. Harnessing the Web and organising the intellectual content with standards and controlled vocabulary provides precise search and retrieval capability, increasing relevance and efficient use of technology. Dublin Core metadata standards permit a full evaluation and cataloguing of Web resources appropriate to highly specific research needs and discovery. Current research points to a type of structure based on a system of faceted classification. This system allows the semantic and syntactic relationships to be defined. Controlled vocabulary, such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings, can be assigned, not in a hierarchical structure, but rather as descriptive facets of relating concepts. Web design features such as this are adding value to discovery and filtering out data that lack authority. The system design allows for scalability and extensibility, two technical features that are integral to future development of the digital library and resource discovery.

    Abstract
    Intelligent agents should be used to assist users of the WWW. Identifies a number of key components in such a system and proposes a system architecture. Designs a learning agent along with the underlying algorithms for the discovery of areas of interest from user access logs. The discovered topics can be used to improve the efficiency of information retrieval by prefetching documents for the users and storing them in a document database in the system.     Facets are an increasingly common feature of contemporary access and discovery systems. These intuitively adaptable structures seem well suited for application in information architecture and the practice of knowledge management (La Barre, 2006). As browsing and searching devices, facets function equally well on e-commerce sites, digital museum portals, and online library catalogs. This paper argues that clearly articulated principles for facets and facet analysis must draw examples from current practice while building upon heritage principles m order to scaffold the development of robust and fully faceted information infrastructures.

    Abstract
    WorldCat, OCLC's bibliographic database, identifies books and the libraries that hold them. The holdings provide detailed information about the type and number of libraries that have acquired the material. Using this information, it is possible to infer the type of audience for which the material is intended. A quantitative measure, the audience level, is derived from the types of libraries that have selected the resource. The audience level can be used to refine discovery, analyze collections, advise readers, and enhance reference services.
