- Abstract
- Discusses the apparently unattainable goal of compatibility of information languages. While controlled languages can improve retrieval performance within a single system, they make cooperation across different systems more difficult. The Internet and downloading accentuate this adverse outcome and the acceleration of data exchange aggravates the problem of compatibility. Defines this familiar concept and demonstrates that coherence is just as necessary as it was for indexing languages, the proliferation of which has created confusion in grouped data banks. Describes 2 types of potential solutions, similar to those applied to automatic translation of natural languages: - harmonizing the information languages themselves, both difficult and expensive, or, the more flexible solution involving automatic harmonization of indexing formulae based on pre established concordance tables. However, structural incompatibilities between post coordinated languages and classifications may lead any harmonization tools up a blind alley, while the paths of a universal concordance model are rare and narrow

- Abstract
- Catalogues date back to the libraries of Babylon and Alexandria, and in the Middle Ages groups of colleges and monasteries created joint catalogues. The dream of universal bibliographic control based on a centralised joint catalogue advanced when the US Library of Congress began selling bibliographic records in 1901. This led to MARC in 1969, and increasing emphasis on standardisation resulted in the first ISBN in 1974

- Abstract
- A discussion of developments to date in the field of computerized indexing, based on presentations given at a seminar held at the Institute of Policy Studies in Paris in Nov 91. The methods tested so far, based on a linguistic approach, whether using natural language or special thesauri, encounter the same central problem - they are only successful when applied to collections of similar types of documents covering very specific subject areas. Despite this, the search for some sort of universal indexing metalanguage continues. In the end, computerized indexing works best when used in conjunction with manual indexing - ideally in the hands of a trained library science professional, who can extract the maximum value from a collection of documents for a particular user population

- Abstract
- Contribution to the ongoing debate on the French subject headings list RAMEAU, which has been much criticised as time consuming and inflexible. Proposed technical solutions to recurring problems with complex syntax, strucutre of hierarchical and associative links, and rigity of language are discussed, in the context of computerised cataloguing and retrieval using OPACs. As a universal indexing language RAMEAU is more appropriate for medium sized specialised libraries and specialist researchers. However the 2 possible subject indexing techniques, linguistic treatment of whole text and thesaurus, are now beginning to be viewed as complementary approaches

- Abstract
- Over the last decade, the gap between North and South in relation to formats has increasingly limited development of international programmes such as UBC and UAP. At present the need to review formats in the light of network developments such as the Internet is urgent. Presentations covered the Web, limitations of traditional formats eg. MARC, Internet formats eg. Z39.50 and SGML, and multimedia formats, with examples of prototypes for converting traditional systems to international standards. The Internet has defined a new field of action for librarians. It is essential that developing countries share the experience of industrialised countries, with support from governments and collaboration from international organisations, in ensuring harmonious progress to universal compatibility

- The work of Joint Steering Committee for the Revision of Anglo-American Cataloguing rules gave rise to a confernce in Toronto, Canada, in Oct 1997. some contributors elaborated on prepared texts about precise points concerning the evolution of rules in general, and those of the AACR in particular.
