    Abstract
Scholars have long noted the significance of Allegheny College's special collections to American cultural and educational history. Special collections have value to colleges and universities as publicity devices to draw scholars, students, and funding to the institution. Catalogers have an important role to play in marketing the library and the college through improved bibliographic access to these collections. Rare book and manuscript cataloging presents many challenges to catalogers, especially at smaller institutions. This report traces the evolution of Allegheny College's catalog, from book format in 1823, through card format, and finally to online. It also explores the bibliographic challenges created as the library moved from one format to another.

    Abstract
In June 2009, the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services Heads of Technical Services in Large Research Libraries Interest Group established the Task Force on Cost/Value Assessment of Bibliographic Control to address recommendation 5.1.1.1 of On the Record: Report of the Library of Congress Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control, which focused on developing measures for costs, benefits, and value of bibliographic control. This paper outlines results of that task force's efforts to develop and articulate metrics for evaluating the cost and value of cataloging activities specifically, and offers some next steps that the community could take to further the profession's collective understanding of the costs and values associated with bibliographic control.

    Abstract
The report from the IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) Study Group on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) recommended a new approach to cataloging based on an entity-relationship model. This study examined a single work, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker, to determine benefits and drawbacks associated with creating such an entity-relationship model. Humphry Clinker was selected for several reasons - it has been previously studied, it is widely held, and it is a work of mid-level complexity. In addition to analyzing the bibliographic records, many books were examined to ensure the accuracy of the resulting FRBR model. While it was possible to identify works and manifestations, identifying expressions was problematic. Reliable identification of expressions frequently necessitated the examination of the books themselves. Enhanced manifestation records where the roles of editors, illustrators, translators, and other contributors are explicitly identified may be a viable alternative to expressions. For Humphry Clinker, the enhanced record approach avoids the problem of identifying expressions while providing similar functionality. With the enhanced manifestation record, the three remaining entity-relationship structures - works, manifestations, and items - the FRBR model provides a powerful means to improve bibliographic organization and navigation.

    Abstract
The main concepts of the report from the report Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) are described. The functionality of the elements included in ISBD(ER) within the FRBR framework is examined. Proposals are offered for the core-level description and for the basic-level national bibliographic record for electronic resources. Also presented are impacts of the FRBR report on creating single/multiple bibliographic records and the idea of the authoritative file of bibliographic descriptions.

    Abstract
Several years ago a conceptual framework was proposed that was designed to capture a bibliographic item by means of a structured approach and to present it in a structured manner in a bibliographic record: the 3-layered approach. Recently IFLA published the report of a study entitled 'Functional requirements for bibliographic records: draft report for worldwide review' for the purpose of a thorough reexamination of the question based on an analysis of user needs. The IFLA report attempted to capture the bibliographic universe through E-R analysis and to define entities, attributes of entities and relationships between them, all of which constitute the bibliographic universe. Compares the 3-layered model and the IFLA model culminating in a reevaluation of the 3-layered model

    Abstract
The Scout Report Signpost demonstrates that Internet resources can be catalogued, classified and arranged using existing taxonomies such as the LCC and LCSH in concert with emerging metadata standards, such as the Dublin Core. Discusses the techniques used to accomplish this, as well as difficulties inherent in such an effort and details a theoretical framework for cataloguing

    Abstract
This is a report by a group "charged to identify current trends that will have a direct impact on cataloging operations and to define possible new roles for the online catalog and cataloging staff at Indiana University." Their one general conclusion after nine months of work is that "The need for cataloging expertise within the I.U. Libraries will not be diminished in the coming years. Rather, catalogers of the future will work in the evolving environment of publishing, scholarly communication, and information technology in new expanded roles. Catalogers will need to be key players in addressing the many challenges facing the libraries and the overall management and organization of information at Indiana University." The report also identifies five strategic directions. The report is an interesting read, and taken with the explosion of related reports (e.g., Calhoun's report to the Library of Congress cited in this issue, the UC Bibliographic Services TF Report), adds yet another perspective to the kinds of changes we must foster to create better library services in a vastly changed environment.
