Die von Acclaim in Deutschland vertriebenen Britannica-Enzyklopädien stellen eine ausgezeichnete Alternative für den des Englischen Kundigen dar. Während früher nur Einfach-Britannicas auf dem Mac liefen, gilt dies nun für alle drei Versionen Student, Deluxe und Ultimate Reference Suite. Die Suite enthält dabei nicht nur alle 75 000 Artikel der 32 Britannica-Bände, sondern auch die 15 000 der Student Encyclopaedia, eines eigenen Schülerlexikons, das durch sein einfaches Englisch gerade für Nicht-Muttersprachler als Einstieg taugt. Wer es noch elementarer haben möchte, klickt sich zur Britannica Elementary Encyclopaedia, welche unter der gleichen Oberfläche wie die anderen Werke zugänglich ist. Schließlich umfasst die Suite einen Weltatlas sowie einsprachige Wörterbücher und Thesauri von Merriam-Webster in der Collegiate- und Student-Ausbaustufe mit allein 555 000 Definitionen, Synonymen und Antonymen. Wer viel in englischer Sprache recherchiert oder gar schreibt, leckt sich angesichts dieses Angebots (EUR 99,95) die Finger, zumal die Printausgabe gut 1600 Euro kostet. Die Texte sind einfach kolossal - allein das Inhaltsverzeichnis des Artikels Germany füllt sieben Bildschirmseiten. Schon die Inhalte aus den BritannicaBänden bieten mehr als doppelt so viel Text wie die rund tausend Euro kostende Brockhaus Enzyklopädie digital (c't 22/02, S. 38). Allein die 220 000 thematisch einsortierten Web-Links sind das Geld wert. Wer die 2,4 Gigabyte belegende Komplettinstallation wählt, muss sogar nie mehr die DVD (alternativ vier CD-ROMs) einlegen. Dieses Jahr muss sich niemand mehr mit dem Britannica-typischen Kuddelmuddel aus Lexikonartikeln und vielen, vielen Jahrbüchern herumschlagen - außer dem Basistext der drei Enzyklopädien sind 'nur' die zwei Jahrbücher 2001 und 2002 getrennt aufgeführt. Wer des Englischen mächtig ist, mag hier die gute Gelegenheit zum Kauf nutzen."

    Abstract
    Wikipedia (the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit) is having a huge impact on how a great many people gather information about the world. So, it is important for epistemologists and information scientists to ask whether people are likely to acquire knowledge as a result of having access to this information source. In other words, is Wikipedia having good epistemic consequences? After surveying the various concerns that have been raised about the reliability of Wikipedia, this article argues that the epistemic consequences of people using Wikipedia as a source of information are likely to be quite good. According to several empirical studies, the reliability of Wikipedia compares favorably to the reliability of traditional encyclopedias. Furthermore, the reliability of Wikipedia compares even more favorably to the reliability of those information sources that people would be likely to use if Wikipedia did not exist (viz., Web sites that are as freely and easily accessible as Wikipedia). In addition, Wikipedia has a number of other epistemic virtues (e.g., power, speed, and fecundity) that arguably outweigh any deficiency in terms of reliability. Even so, epistemologists and information scientists should certainly be trying to identify changes (or alternatives) to Wikipedia that will bring about even better epistemic consequences. This article suggests that to improve Wikipedia, we need to clarify what our epistemic values are and to better understand why Wikipedia works as well as it does. Somebody who reads Wikipedia is rather in the position of a visitor to a public restroom, says Mr. McHenry, Britannica's former editor. It may be obviously dirty, so that he knows to exercise great care, or it may seem fairly clean, so that he may be lulled into a false sense of security. What he certainly does not know is who has used the facilities before him. One wonders whether people like Mr. McHenry would prefer there to be no public lavatories at all.     Abstract
    The Encyclopedia of Earth (EoE) seeks to become the world's largest and most authoritative electronic source of information about the environments of Earth and their interactions with society. It is a free, fully searchable collection of articles written by scholars, professionals, educators, and experts who collaborate and review each other's work with oversight from an International Advisory Board. The articles are written in non-technical language and are available for free, with no commercial advertising to students, educators, scholars, professionals, decision makers, as well as to the general public. The scope of the Encyclopedia of Earth is the environment of the Earth broadly defined, with particular emphasis on the interaction between society and the natural spheres of the Earth. It will be built on the integrated knowledge from economists to philosophers to span all aspects of the environment. The Encyclopedia is being built bottom-up through the use of a wiki-software that allows users to freely create and edit content. New collaborations, ideas, and entries dynamically evolve in this environment. In this way, the Encyclopedia is a constantly evolving, self-organizing, expert-reviewed, and up-to-date source of environmental information. The motivation behind the Encyclopedia of Earth is simple. Go to GoogleT and type in climate change, pesticides, nuclear power, sustainable development, or any other important environmental issue. Doing so returns millions of results, some fraction of which are authoritative. The remainder is of poor or unknown quality.
    This illustrates a stark reality of the Web. There are many resources for environmental content, but there is no central repository of authoritative information that meets the needs of diverse user communities. The Encyclopedia of Earth aims to fill that niche by providing content that is both free and reliable. Still in its infancy, the EoE already is an integral part of the emerging effort to increase free and open access to trusted information on the Web. It is a trusted content source for authoritative indexes such as the Online Access to Research in the Environment Initiative, the Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative, the Open Education Resources Commons, Scirus, DLESE, WiserEarth, among others. Our initial Content Partners include the American Institute of Physics, the University of California Museum of Paleontology, TeacherServe®, the U.S. Geological Survey, the International Arctic Science Committee, the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International, the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, and the United Nations Environment Programme, to name just a few.     Mehrere Millionen Euro Verlust für 2007 Auch eine Sonderedition von Armin Müller-Stahl kam bei Menschen und Medien zwar gut an, konnte den Verkauf aber nicht ankurbeln. Allein aus Prestigegründen könne der Verlag keine neue Auflage herausbringen: ,Wir sind sehr skeptisch, ob es eine 22. Auflage geben wird." Der Verlag hat einen Verlust von mehreren Millionen Euro für 2007 angekündigt. Das Geschäft mit Duden, Schulbuch und Kalendern laufe dagegen gut, sagte Holoch. Auch Themenlexika wie "Brockhaus Wein" sei en sehr erfolgreich. Auch Angebote wie der Brockhaus auf CD-Rom werden bleiben. In den vergangenen sechs, sieben Jahren habe der klassische Lexikon-Markt bereits gebröckelt. "Jetzt scheint das Internet den absoluten Durchbruch geschafft zu haben." Dass der Verlag die Kehrtwende zu spät vollzogen habe, bestreitet Holoch. Bei der Vorbereitung des Online-Angebots sei der Verlag aber "von der Marktentwicklung überholt" worden. Und: Beim Print Thema wollten wir wirklich alles probiert haben." Rund 60 Mitarbeiter in der Leipziger Online-Redaktion kümmern sich nun um das neue Produkt. "Der Stamm der Mannschaft, die an der letzten, seit Ende 2006 vollständigen Printausgabe arbeitete, wurde mit Online-Profis ergänzt", erklärt Holoch. Chefredakteurin wird Sigrun Albert, die zuvor die Redaktionen von "Brigitte.de" und "YoungMiss.de" leitete. Meyers Lexikon - es gehört ebenfalls zum Verlag Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG - ist bereits seit einem guten Jahr online: "Das war unser Testfeld, es hat sich gut entwickelt." Zu Meyers Lexikon können User selbst mit Artikeln beitragen, die von der Redaktion geprüft und ergänzt werden. Das soll beim Brockhaus anders sein, sagt Holoch, verspricht aber: Wir werden auch auf Web 2.0-Bedürfnisse eingehen."
    Doch die Konkurrenz ist groß. In dieser Woche ist auch "Spiegel Wissen online gegangen, mit dem auf Wikipedia, das BertelsmannLexikon und sämtliche Artikel des "Spiegel" und zum Teil des "Manager-Magazins" kostenlos zurückgegriffen werden kann. ,Wir glauben, dass wir damit nicht nur den Lesern, sondern auch dem "Spiegel' den größeren Gefallen tun", sagt Ressortchef Hauke Janssen. Eine besondere Stellung beansprucht Brockhaus aber weiter für sich: "Wir werden uns klar von Anbietern wie Wikipedia unterscheiden. Wir setzen auf Relevanz, Richtigkeit und Sicherheit - wir werden nicht manipulierbar sein." Eine Kritik, die man bei Wikipedia erwartungsgemäß ungern hört: »Es kann keine hundertprozentige Garantie für hundertprozentige Richtigkeit geben", sagt Klempert. "Entscheidend ist, wie schnell Fehler erkannt und beseitigt werden." Und da sorge die große Autorenschar bei Wikipedia für einen "Selbstreinigungseffekt": "Oft nach Minuten, spätestens nach wenigen Stunden sind Fehler korrigiert." Diese Selbsteinschätzung bestätigten Experten nach Tests mit Wikipedia: Bei mehreren Vergleichen mit der Encyclopedia Britannica und auch dem Brockhaus zeigte sich die kostenlose Volksenzyklopädie als ebenbürtig - und manchmal als überlegen. Jedenfalls: Von der noblen 30-bändigen Enzyklopädie zum werbefinanzierten Gratisangebot im Internet - für den Mannheimer Traditionsverlag Brockhaus ist das ein "Paradigmenwechsel", sagt Klaus Holoch. "Das tut natürlich auch ein bisschen weh, wir lieben ja alle Bücher. Aber unsere Königssubstanz bringen wir künftig ins Internet, weil die Zukunft online ist.""

    Google or Wikipedia? Those of us who search online -- and who doesn't? -- are getting referred more and more to Wikipedia. For the past two years, this free online "encyclopedia of the people" has been topping the lists of the world's most popular websites. But do we really know what we're using? Backlight plunges into the story behind Wikipedia and explores the wonderful world of Web 2.0. Is it a revolution, or pure hype? Director IJsbrand van Veelen goes looking for the truth behind Wikipedia. Only five people are employed by the company, and all its activities are financed by donations and subsidies. The online encyclopedia that everyone can contribute to and revise is now even bigger than the illustrious Encyclopedia Britannica. Does this spell the end for traditional institutions of knowledge such as Britannica? And should we applaud this development as progress or mourn it as a loss? How reliable is Wikipedia? Do "the people" really hold the lease on wisdom? And since when do we believe that information should be free for all? In this film, "Wikipedians," the folks who spend their days writing and editing articles, explain how the online encyclopedia works. In addition, the parties involved discuss Wikipedia's ethics and quality of content. It quickly becomes clear that there are camps of both believers and critics. Wiki's Truth introduces us to the main players in the debate: Jimmy Wales (founder and head Wikipedian), Larry Sanger (co-founder of Wikipedia, now head of Wiki spin-off Citizendium), Andrew Keen (author of The Cult of the Amateur: How Today's Internet Is Killing Our Culture and Assaulting Our Economy), Phoebe Ayers (a Wikipedian in California), Ndesanjo Macha (Swahili Wikipedia, digital activist), Tim O'Reilly (CEO of O'Reilly Media, the "inventor" of Web 2.0), Charles Leadbeater (philosopher and author of We Think, about crowdsourcing), and Robert McHenry (former editor-in-chief of Encyclopedia Britannica). Opening is a video by Chris Pirillo. The questions surrounding Wikipedia lead to a bigger discussion of Web 2.0, a phenomenon in which the user determines the content. Examples include YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, and Wikipedia.     10 000 Texter am Werk "Akl , wie Klempert sich als Wiki-pedia-Benutzer im Internet nennt, hat 2003 als Hobby-Enzyklopädist bei der deutschsprachigen Ausgabe begonnen. Gestartet war das Original des US-Gründers Jimmy Wales 2001. "Ich war begeistert von der Idee und von dem, was von Hobby-Autoren in so kurzer Zeit geleistet worden war." Der frischgebacken Lexikon-Autor, ein Medien-Soziologe mit wechselnden Jobs als Journalist, Öffentlichkeitsarbeiter, PR- und Internet-Fachmann, beschrieb "Das Wunder von Bern", den ,,Heilklima-tischen Kurort" sowie die "Burg Königstein". Grundlegendes über "Heidi Klum", das Phänomen "Seifenoper" und die "Spielbank Bad Homburg" folgten. Wobei Klempert Wert darauf legt, dass man von den Themen nicht voreilig auf persönliche Vorlieben schließt. "Es macht mir Spaß , mich in die Themen reinzuhängen, von denen ich vorher keine Ahnung hatte." Die Wikipedia-Idee, das "Wissen der Welt" zu sammeln, aufbereitet von Freiwilligen, zum freien und damit kostenlosen Gebrauch im Internet veröffentlicht, hat "AM" sofort fasziniert. In der englischsprachigen Wikipedia stehen mittlerweile mehr als 1,8 Millionen Artikel, in der deutschen sind 600 000 erreicht. Quantitativ kann sich die Online-Enzyklopädie mit traditionellen Lexika messen, die mehr als 2000 Euro kosten. Zum Vergleich: Die Londoner Encyclopedia Britannica hat 70 000 Artikel, der Brockhaus 300000 Stichwörter.
