    Abstract
    In recent years there is growing interest in the study of paranormal phenomenon. A broad area referred to as the Science of Consciousness has emerged as a discipline. This paper is an attempt to map the domain, and examine its coverage in knowledge organization systems. An idea of the facets of the domain is also provided based on an analysis of the published literature with the suggestion that these need to be adequately provided for in systems of knowledge organization.

    Abstract
    The scholarly community is increasingly employing the Web both for publication of scholarly output and for locating and accessing relevant scholarly literature. Organization of this vast body of digital information assumes significance in this context. The sheer volume of digital information to be handled makes traditional indexing and knowledge representation strategies ineffective and impractical. It is, therefore, worth exploring new approaches. An approach being discussed considers the intrinsic semantics of texts of documents. Based on the hypothesis that noun phrases in a text are semantically rich in terms of their ability to represent the subject content of the document, this approach seeks to identify and extract noun phrases instead of single keywords, and use them as descriptors. This paper presents a methodology that has been developed for extracting noun phrases from Portuguese texts. The results of an experiment carried out to test the adequacy of the methodology are also presented.

    Abstract
    Information Science, which attained the status of a discipline in the 1980s, has been enriched by Inputs from a number of disciplines ranging from computer technology to psychology. A predominant characteristic of research in Information Retrieval in recent years has been the adoption of a 'user-centered' approach to the design of information systems. This shift in the emphasis began primarily after Belkin enunciated his ASK (Anomalous State of Knowledge) hypothesis. Research in the Cognitive Sciences has the potential to contribute substantially to enhancing all Information Retrieval processes. This paper emphasizes the importance of adopting a broad-based approach to cognitive research in IR and suggests that there is a need for exploring the relevance of analytico-synthetic approach and related research in the design of IR systems.

    Abstract
    Based on a paper presentend to the Documentation Research and Training Centre 'Seminar on classification and indexing in social sciences', Bangalore. An analysis of a detailed survey on facet-analysed subject strings in the field of social sciences. Subject strings of 4 typers were administered as a stratified sample of responses to identify the gaps in semantic connotation of terms. This survey has helped to idetify the possible aberrations in the semantic connotations due to the presence or absence of terms. It was found that use of prepositions, conjunctions and other role indicating terms gives semantic clarity. The syntax of speciator terms may have to be varied according to the respondent groups. It was found that if the number of component terms in a subject string increases beyond a certain limit it gives rise to problems in interpretation of ideas. This indicates a break-even point for formulating subject headings

    Based on experiences with the design and development of a Tamil-English bilingual thesaurus this paper discusses with examples: (1) some issues related to vocabulary management in multilingual thesauri in culture-specific domains; (2) special aspects of the Tamil language in this regard; (3) alternative ways of linking certain descriptors to lengthy lists of NTs and RTs; (4) advantages of integrated use of two or more knowledge organization tools; and (5) use of the bilingual thesaurus for certain types of research in Tamil. Issues related to equivalence, non-hierarchic associative relationships, homographs, NTs are discussed. The paper suggests that integrated use of two or more knowledge organization tools adds value.

    Abstract
    Patient records constitute an important source of valuable information for health-care personnel. Unfortunately, however, in most health-care institutions these are not indexed and organized to support decision-making. A patient record is complex and has data on so many parameters that conventional methods are not capable of fully exploiting the information and knowledge in these. This paper reports the initial results of an ongoing experiment to build an ontology based on concepts extracted from the patient records in the domain of neurosurgery of a large hospital. Results suggest that the ontology could prove to be an acceptable way of providing a decision support system for health care personnel.
