    Abstract
Few librarians and documentalists realise that the same term may have different meanings even within the same subject field in the context of different schools of thought, cultures, etc. By making explicit the concepts that authors are using - based on their explicit definitions, rather than just inferring meanings from the way they use key-words - it would become possible to determine which of the several concepts a term refers to is used in a given case. The INTERCONCEPT project, launched by UNESCO in 1977 is intended to demonstrate, among other that the solution to this problem could be facilitated by using a conceptual data bank, both in indexing and classification and also in information retrieval. It should be noted that this is only one of the aims of the INTERCONCEPT project, the final aim bing to promote international understandingby conceptual control and analysis in the field of social sciences

    Abstract
One of the most surprising findings in the information sciences is the recurrence of a small number of frequency distributions. In this paper, these distributions are described, and a point of view is adopted that allows us to understand them a being different versions of a single distribution. The empirical distributions are shown to be special cases of a single theoretic distribution. It is found that when random fluctuations are introduced, the distributions are not strongly influenced

    Abstract
As part of the study of human information search strategy, the concept of the search tactic, or move made to futher a search, is introduced. 29 search tactics are named, defined, and discussed in 4 categories: monitoring, file structure, search formulation, and term. Implications of the search tactics for research in search strategy are considered. The search tactics are inteded to be practically useful in information searching. This approach to searching is designed to be general, yet nontrivial; it is applicable to both bibliographic and reference searches and in both manual and on-line systems

    Abstract
The criticisms made against chain indexing are reviewed, and PRECIS briefly considered as a possible (but improbable) general substitute for indexing. The failures of chain indexing arise mainly from an inherited overemphasis on generic relationships, encouraged by careless use of the term 'chain'. The use of symbols to represent relations between terms is suggested for the chain index, to emphasize syntagmatic relations and prevent ambiguity. These relationships can be used to manipulate the index terms into likely additional index approaches, employing the logical concepts of symmetry and transitivity which derive from a structure inherent between relations, a sort of 'metarelations'. The transitivityy of the relations of action or property to object over the relation of material to object are particularly considered, and clues to this relational structure obtained from Aristotle's theory of causation

    Abstract
What is interesting in natural language semantics is not so much the class of referents of a term at any particular point in time but rather the dynamics by which this set is changed. In particular, linguists today are intrigued by the interaction of speakers - the mechanism of dialogue. The interesting thing about classification is not that it yields a precise way of using terms derived from a natural language but that it is essentially a different thing than a natural language. The fact that artificially constructed classes may - and should - have names rather than code symbols as identifiers may confuse this issue
