Kapitel 5.2. Gegliedert in die Abschnitte: (1) Definition und allgemeine Funktion im bibliothekarischen Dienstleistungsspektrum (2) Verbale Sacherschließung (3) Klassifikatorische Sacherschließung (4) Kataloganreicherung, Metadaten-Generierung aus Paratext und erweiterte Volltexterschließung (5) Bibliothekarische Inhaltserschließung im 21. Jahrhundert - Gesamtprobleme und Perspektiven. Man beachte die Aussage: "Die maschinelle Indexierung ordnet Schlagwörter bzw. Deskriptoren zu Dokumenten automatisch zu, d.h. mit Hilfe von Computerprogrammen und in der Regel von Wörterbüchern." (S.366), die nach wie vor ein problematische Verknüpfung zwischen intellektuellen Indexierungsergebnissen (Schlagwörter, Deskriptoren) und maschinellen Vorgehensweisen herstellt.
