    Abstract
    The concept of a system combining information in both textual and pictorial format was first suggested by Vannevar Bush in 1945. The present hypermedia system was originally developed by Tim Berners Lee at CERN in 1989 and provides access to brief documents, which are interlinked and contain text, images, sound and video.     Auch die digitalen Aufzeichnungen der DDR-Behörden: bis zu 30 Prozent unbrauchbar. Weil falsch gelagert und nicht gepflegt. Moderne Medien sind empfindlicher als Bücher: Wenn ein Gedichtband in die Badewanne fällt, ist er nass. Wenn eine Diskette hineinfällt, ist sie näss und wahrscheinlich kaputt. Wo sind in fünfzig Jahren all die Magisterarbeiten? All die Aufsätze? All die Urlaubsvideos? All die Briefe? So gesehen sind Höhlenmalereien einer CD weit überlegen. Man kriegt in eine Höhle kein Gigabyte, aber das Gekritzel hält sich über Jahrtausende. Eine CD kann nach fünf Jahren unlesbar sein. Auch ägyptisches Pergament und mittelalterliches Papier, noch ohne Säure drin, sind bessere Speichermedien als eine Videokassette. Das heißt: Sie sind ein besseres Gedächtnis. Die heutige Welt speichert viel mehr. Es gibt eine Schätzung, derzufolge wir seit 1945 hundert Mal mehr Informationen erzeugt und gespeichert haben als die Menschheit in ihrer ganzen Geschichte zuvor. Die heutige Welt vergisst aber auch viel schneller. Also: Ein Magnetband hält sich zehn bis 30 Jahre. Ein VHS-Band auch. Ein Mikrofilm lebt zehn bis 500 Jahre, je nach Pfle ge. Säurehaltiges Zeitungspapier: zehn bis 20 Jahre. Dia: hundert Jahre. Festplatte: 20 Jahre. CD: fünf bis 200 Jahre. Die Schätzungen sind umso gröber, je neuer die Medien sind - es fehlen die Erfahrungswerte. Und das Internet? Die größte aller Bibliotheken, das gewaltigste aller Postämter? In dem alle acht Minuten die gleiche Datenmenge entsteht, die das nationale Archiv der USA verwaltet? Das Internet ist wissensdurstig wie ein Kind, aber vergesslich wie ein Greis. Die durchschnittliche Lebensdauer einer Internetseite liegt bei sechs bis acht Wochen. Wer will da gewährleisten, dass Daten im Internet überleben? Wer will mit Sicherheit sagen, dass es die richtigen Daten sind und nicht die entscheiden, ob Daten überhaupt wichtig sind, wichtig genug, um der Nachwelt erhalten zu bleiben? Die Betreiber von www.archive.org speichern, was kommt, Spreu wie Weizen: Sie durchkämmen das Internet jeden Tag nach neuen, öffentlich zugänglichen Seiten. Die speichern sie dann auf digitalen Bändern - damit die Seite weiterlebt, wenn sie im Internet nur noch 404 File Not Found ist. Wissenschaftler diskutieren, ob es im Internet nicht so etwas wie eine DNA geben könnte, ein automatisches Speichern, durch das sich die Informationen selbst weiterkopieren - und das immer im aktuellsten Dateiformat. Dann ginge nichts verloren. Aber die Datenmenge würde wachsen wie ein Ballon. Wollen unsere Enkel das lesen? Also müssen wir das tun, was auch unsere Vorfahren getan haben, um Schriften zu erhalten: abschreiben. Kopieren, was uns wichtig erscheint. Wegen immer neuer Dateitypen und Speichermedien ist das mühsam. Bei größeren Datenmengen, wie Firmen und Behörden sie verwalten, ist es auch ziemlich teuer. Viele Informationen ohne Marktwert werden daher jung sterben. Die Höhlenmalereien dagegen werden wir wohl noch in hundert Jahren besichtigen können - auch wenn sie nicht einmal ein Backup hatten."

    Abstract
    The BAER Web Resources Group was charged in October 1999 with defining and describing the parameters of electronic resources that do not clearly belong to the categories being defined by the BAER Digital Group or the BAER Electronic Journals Group. After some difficulty identifying precisely which resources fell under the Group's charge, we finally named the following types of resources for our consideration: web sites, electronic texts, indexes, databases and abstracts, online reference resources, and networked and non-networked CD-ROMs. Electronic resources are a vast and growing collection that touch nearly every department within the Library. It is unrealistic to think one department can effectively administer all aspects of the collection. The Group then began to focus on the concern of bibliographic access to these varied resources, and to define parameters for handling or processing them within the Library. Some key elements became evident as the work progressed. * Selection process of resources to be acquired for the collection * Duplication of effort * Use of CORC * Resource Finder design * Maintenance of Resource Finder * CD-ROMs not networked * Communications * Voyager search limitations. An unexpected collaboration with the Web Development Committee on the Resource Finder helped to steer the Group to more detailed descriptions of bibliographic access. This collaboration included development of data elements for the Resource Finder database, and some discussions on Library staff processing of the resources. The Web Resources Group invited expert testimony to help the Group broaden its view to envision public use of the resources and discuss concerns related to technical services processing. The first testimony came from members of the Resource Finder Committee. Some background information on the Web Development Resource Finder Committee was shared. The second testimony was from librarians who select electronic texts. Three main themes were addressed: accessing CD-ROMs; the issue of including non-networked CD-ROMs in the Resource Finder; and, some special concerns about electronic texts. The third testimony came from librarians who select indexes and abstracts and also provide Reference services. Appendices to this report include minutes of the meetings with the experts (Appendix A), a list of proposed data elements to be used in the Resource Finder (Appendix B), and recommendations made to the Resource Finder Committee (Appendix C).     Abstract
    Confirms the accuracy of a prediction 4 years ago that the CD-ROM graphic interfaces then available would be rivalled in online. Many Web based services now outperform CD-ROM models and magazine pages often look better on the Web than on CD-ROM. Desirable, but not widely available, is the facility to download data from CD-ROM databases. The best CD-ROM authority and retrieval software packages with impressible capabilities remain expensive but there are reasonably priced alternatives for Web publishing and database searching, many of which are derived from CD-ROM originals. A new software development which allows replication of Web sites on CD-ROM will feature in articles in future issues of 'Information today'
