    Abstract
Scholars writing books that are widely used to support teaching in higher education may be undervalued because of a lack of evidence of teaching value. Although sales data may give credible evidence for textbooks, these data may poorly reflect educational uses of other types of books. As an alternative, this article proposes a method to search automatically for mentions of books in online academic course syllabi based on Bing searches for syllabi mentioning a given book, filtering out false matches through an extensive set of rules. The method had an accuracy of over 90% based on manual checks of a sample of 2,600 results from the initial Bing searches. Over one third of about 14,000 monographs checked had one or more academic syllabus mention, with more in the arts and humanities (56%) and social sciences (52%). Low but significant correlations between syllabus mentions and citations across most fields, except the social sciences, suggest that books tend to have different levels of impact for teaching and research. In conclusion, the automatic syllabus search method gives a new way to estimate the educational utility of books in a way that sales data and citation counts cannot.

    Abstract
There is a need for highly trained special collections and rare books catalogers as found in recent job postings. Where will these catalogers learn the unique skills needed for them to succeed in their careers? This paper is an environmental survey of courses offered by the 68 Library and Information Science programs accredited by the American Library Association. It evaluates what course offerings in cataloging and special collections are available. These findings suggest LIS programs currently do not offer sufficient numbers of courses to train special collections and rare books catalogers. Additional skills, from extra languages to knowledge of DCRM(B), need to be acquired in other ways, before, during, and after traditional LIS degree work.

    Abstract
An understanding of the workings of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) is one of the most valuable conceptual tools a researcher can have. The subject heading system is by no means obvious or self-evident, however; it must be taught, explained, and exemplified by librarians. Several points must be covered explicitly. The cross-reference notation of UF, BT, RT, SA, and NT has to be explained; the importance of choosing the most specific heading available, rather than a general term, must also be emphasized. There are four ways to find the most specific LCSH terms for a particular topic; two of them come from using the red books, two from using the online catalog itself. All four ways are important; none is obvious. Each must be taught

    Abstract
This paper presents a seminar project held in the summer of 2004 at the Institute of Library Science at Humboldt University, Berlin. The result of the seminar was a book, compiled and edited by students, which contained a series of essays from professional librarians. Titled Library Science - quo vadis?, the book discusses the history, current position and the future of library science, not only in Germany, but also in other European countries and the USA. It shows that the discipline of library science is not limited to the physical aspects of managing books stacked on shelves, but that in the age of the information society, libraries play a key role in the distribution, protection, management and theories of information and knowledge.

    Abstract
This paper discusses the education and training of both junior and professional staff for cataloguing at the University of Botswana Library and examines the formal library school education at the University of Botswana offered by the Department of Library and Information Studies (LIS). It focuses on education for cataloguing and classification with emphasis on descriptive cataloguing; subject access; classification; bibliographic control on books, and other library materials. The paper also discusses on-the job training and continuing education for librarians and junior library staff. This paper shows the relationship that existed between the Cataloguing unit and Subject Librarians before the restructuring of the Cataloguing and Acquisitions units in the late 1990s. That restructuring changed the relationship that existed between Cataloguing Unit and Subject Librarians regarding the cataloguing and classification of materials and the training activities organized by the Cataloguing unit for Subject Librarians in an attempt to ensure quality records. It touches on the training conducted outside the country. The paper draws information from official documents and the author's long experience in various levels and units of University of Botswana Library starting from year 1982.
