    Summarises the final report of the Society of Indexers / Liverpool John Moores University investigation of indexes to children's information books, focusing on indexes for children at National Curriculum Key Stage 2 (age 7-11). Questionnaires were received from 98 indexers, librarians, parents and teachers and 16 publishers. Work was also done with 154 children in 4 schools.     Abstract
    At Virginia Commonwealth University's Library, the 200-title ready reference collection was obstructing service. In order to ascertain what books were really needed at the reference desk, all the books in the ready reference collection were reshelved in the reference stacks at the beginning of the 1991-92 academic year. During the first semester, books were placed on ready reference on the written recommendations of reference staff. At the end of the semester, the collection was reviewed by the department and 24 titles were approved. Such drastic action, Clark and Cary write, challenged their expertise and energized the staff. As needs, technology, staffing, and funding change, so must the format and content of ready reference collections

    Abstract
    Current trends in library training and practice reflect the inexorable movement toward the electronic environemnt. In this setting, librarians are beginning to pay considerably less attention to the books in their reference collections than to the online sources. This is cause for concern, since materials in the print format are often preferable to the electronic. They can be more accessible, quicker, and easier to use. Their contents are likely to be more comprehensive and are often unique. Urges librarians to continue to become familiar with and use the books in their reference collection

    "Interessenten können sich die Online-Variante schon jetzt bei einigen Buchhändlern zur Probe freischalten lassen. Mit ihr ist der Kindler von Verleger Helmut Kindler bereits in den 50er Jahren nach dem Vorbild italienischer und französischer Werklexika konzipiert und 1965 herausgebracht, die zweite Auflage folgte 1988 in einer für Nachschlagewerke schwierigen Gegenwart angekommen: Die kostenlose Konkurrenz im Netz ließ die Lexikonlegende Brockhaus im letzten Jahr aufgeben. Um so erstaunlicher, dass der Online-Kindler genauso viel kosten wird wie der gedruckte: 1950 Euro (ab 1.1.2010: 2400 Euro). Die Kombination beider Ausgaben ist für 2730 Euro (ab 1.1.2010: 3360 Euro), die Online-Aktualisierung für jährlich 99,95 Euro zu haben. Ob der Metzler Verlag sein erhebliches wirtschaftliches Risiko bei diesem Mammutunternehmen ausgerechnet durch eine prohibitive Preisgestaltung für die Online-Variante vermindern kann? Zumindest ein moderater Kombipreis wäre wünschenswert. Die Käufer erhielten damit das, was Thomas Rohde eine "statusdienliche Komponente" nennt (FR v. 30.6.2009). Das Buch sei "als ein überaus materielles Gut in der kollektiven Wahrnehmung verankert", daher müsse man, so Rohde, für eine gewisse Zeit die Preise für immaterielle E-Books mit einer materiellen Dreingabe rechtfertigen.
