Wichtig bei einer Entscheidung für ein bestimmtes Suchtool ist der den individuellen Bedürfnissen angepasste Funktionsumfang. Neben der Dateisuche, die alle Programme für die gängigen Formate bewerkstelligen, sollte beispielsweise geprüft werden, welche E-Mail-Formate unterstützt werden. Am wenigsten Probleme hat man wie auch sonst, wenn man nur die Standardsoftware von Microsoft verwendet - deren Dateiformate werden von allen Suchtools unterstützt. Verwendet man aber Programme mit "exotischeren" Dateiformaten oder möchte man beispielsweise Protokolle aus dem Instant Messaging durchsuchen, so wird die Auswahl der Programme deutlich eingeschränkt. Vor der Installation eines Programms sollte man also genau prüfen, ob es den eigenen Anforderungen genügt.
