    Abstract
The paper addresses the ways in which computerization and a thesaurus like the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) influenece the organization, description, and understanding of the visual arts. It discusses these issues from the point of view of the AAT and considers how its structure and content serve as a bridging mechanism between the many different manifestations of the visual arts and the different types of organizations serving the viewers of art, whether as students, scholars, collection managers, or the enjoying public. This paper shows how a knowledge base like the AAT helps this variety of users develop approaches to the visual arts and suggests that the special nature of dealing with image rather than text influences how the thesaurus is structured and applied

    Abstract
The Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) was designed as a comprehensive vocabulary in its domain. Its faceted, hierarchically arranged structure allows for powerful indexing and retrieval capabilities, while its planned network of related term relationships makes it especially amenable to natural language processing. To gauge the AAT's effectiveness as a search tool against natural language queries, an experiment was carried out on DIALOG. There are 3 art data bases on DIALOG and there are also a number of other data bases that contain art related material. The experiment used queries culled from reference librarians at art and architecture libraries.

    Abstract
Paper presented at a symposium on 'Implementing the Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT): Controlled Vocabulary in the Extended MARC Format', held at the 1989 Annual Conference of the Art Libraries Society of North America. Examines the structure of subject headings in the light of machine manipulation. Draws attention to the fact that as on-line cataloguing systems become more sophisticated, and the results of search experiments demonstrate the inadequacy of present modes of subject access to bibliographic and image data, the structure of subject headings become more critical, and changes will continue to occur.
