    Abstract
This 1993 edition is the authoritative guide constructing single-language thesauri, one of the most powerful tools for information retrieval. Written by experts, Z39.19 shows how to formulate descriptors, establish relationships among terms, and present the information in print and on a screen. Also included are thesaurus maintenance procedures and recommended features for thesaurus management systems

    Abstract
This paper describes a proposal for a new approach to thesaurus design and construction that could have significant implicantions for change in the way multilingual thesauri are handled and integrated with each other. The formula presented here has its origin in the work of the German Thesaurus Committee and has had input from a number of scientists and practitioners int he field. The emphasis is on the various types of relationships found among concepts, notiions and universals in languages. These relationships are analysed and refined beyond the approach taken in existing thesauri. This proposal is very much at the discussion stage and the author invites the assistance of interested readers through criticisms, discussion and dialogue. Applications of the proposed thesaurus are included and the major goal of this proposal is to provide the basis for improved desing and integration of multilingual thesauri

    Abstract
Reports on a research project aimed at constructing a thesaurus to be used for indexing materials in the area of law. it was observed that despite the importance of specialized controlled vocabularies, none has been made for law. In the project, terms used by practitioners and those in literature were compared to produce a balanced thesaurus. 1000 terms were selected from the literature of law and sent to 60 law experts for their comments and suggestions. Analysis was then carried out using the student t-test statistic. It was observed that there was no significant difference between the terms used by the lawyers and those in law literature

    Abstract
The architecture of multilingual software systems is sometimes centred around an intermediate language. The question is analyzed to what extent this approach can be useful for multilingual thesauri, in particular regarding the functionality the thesaurus is designed to fulfil. Both the runtime use, and the construction and maintenance of the system is taken into consideration. Using the perspective of general language technology enables to draw on experience from a broader range of fields beyond thesaurus design itself as well as to consider the possibility of using a thesaurus as a knowledge module in various systems which process natural language. Therefore the features which thesauri and other natural-language processing systems have in common are emphasized, especially at the level of systems design and their core functionality

    Abstract
The benefits of a well constructed thesaurus to an information retrieval system have long been recognised by both researchers and practitioners in the field. Examines both early and current approaches to automatic thesaurus construction and describes an approach to the automatic generation of global thesauri based on the term discrimination value model of Salton Yang, and Yu and on an appropriate clustering algorithm. This method has been implemented and applied to 2 document collections. Preliminary results indicate that this method, which produces improvements in retrieval performance in excess of 10 and 15% in the test collections, is viable and worthy of continued investigation.

    Abstract
Most indexed databases now include their thesauri and/or coding in their bibliographic files, searchable at the databases' online connect rates. Assesses the searchability of these on the different hosts. Thesauri and classifications are also available as diskette or CD-ROM products. Describes a number of these, highlighting the diskette thesaurus from IFI/Plenum Data for its flexible databases, the CLAIMS Uniterm and Comprehensive indexes to US chemical patents

    Abstract
Discusses the need for facilities for online vocabulary control and standardization of terms, codes, etc., so as to secure consistency in naming of subjects, objects, countries, languages, etc., in databases at data entry stage. Most information storage and retrieval packages for microcomputers including MicroIsis provide for online vocabulary control in formulating search expressions for information retrieval, but not at the data entry stage. VOCON.PAS is a Pascal interface program for use with MicroIsis software for (a) online selection of term(s) and/or code(s) from vocabulary control tool, such as, thesaurus, subject heading list, classification scheme, nomenclature list(s)

    Abstract
Reports results of research to develop an information retrieval technique employing a conceptual distance measure between words and based on a large thesaurus. The techniques is specifically designed for data sharing in large scale autonomous distributed federated databases (FDBS). The prototype federated dictionary system, FEDDICT, stores information on the location of data sets within the FDBS and on semantic relationships exisitng between these data sets. WordNet is used and tested as the medium for bulding and operating FEDDICT

    Abstract
Considers the theoretical questions involved in the indexing of fiction from several viewpoints: general principles of fiction indexing, and the making of book indexes for novels and other fictional works. Describes the work undertaken to develop fiction thesauri with particular reference to work done in Scandinavia, notably in the development of Kaunokki: the Finnish Thesaurus for Fiction, by Helsinki University Library and BTJ Group Ltd. Briefly presents notes on the structure of Kaunokkis with some examples of its practical use and user feedback from several years' experience of its use in Finnish public libraries. Concludes that the widest field for additional studies would be in the building up of special information systems for fiction.
