    Abstract
How are the boundaries of information objects to be defined in the networked electronic environment and what is the role of our retrieval systems in providing access where these boundaries are uncertain? The authors consider these questions in light of longstanding problems surrounding the definition of the "work" in the print environment. In particular, they examine the role of the index in providing access to the collected works of the individual writer. They review the discussion in the indexing literature of the "long index," and the close relationship between the functions of indexer and editor in collected works projects. And they treat the role of the index in constituting as a self-contained corpus the disparate types of text that make up a writer's lifetime output. Finally, by way of example, the authors turn to the extensive indexes to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic writings.

    Abstract
Describes a model of meta information architectures (header, local index, and directory) and presents 3 current or proposed meta information structures for networked information resources, such as Internet resources, with applicability to organization and access in libraries and networked information environments. Special emphasis is given to the Text Encoding Initiative's TEI Header and Independent Header as a model for meta information for academic and library needs. Recommendation is made for the specification of a generalized SGML meta information header based on the principles of the TEI Independent Header, to address the needs of cataloguing, automatic processing, and serving of networkd information resources

    Abstract
This article provides a review of cataloging and classification publications that appeared in the last two years. The review considers the papers in two categories. Cataloging Theories and Practices covers descriptive cataloging, authority control, classification, subject cataloging, cataloging nonbook materials, electronic resources and metadata, and international cooperation. The second section covers other issues related to cataloging, including management, and education and training. Throughout the review, the author identifies trends and important developments in the area of cataloging and classification.

    Abstract
Describes the experience of data conversion and migration at the libraries of the Home Office (HO) and the Dept. of the Environment (DoE), UK. Both HO and DoE libraries had changed from Anglo-American code cataloguing to AACR2 cataloguing in the mid-1970s. Both libraries were selective in identifying records for conversion initially to BLAISE-LOCAS. Conversion to integrated library systems from BLAISE-LOCAS MARC tapes produced problems in both libraries with location/holdings fields which were largely resolved at HO, but not resolved at DoE. HO experienced problems converting to a system with fixed field lengths. HO converted subject keywords to form a rudimentary, non-standard thesaurus which required the addition of Broader Term and Narrower Term to meet the challenge of computerized searching. DoE converted a non-thesaurus subject index to an authority file, but continued to maintain the index on a stand-alone DataEase application for use by cataloguers. Neither library converted acquisitions data

    Abstract
Considers the relevance of Cutter's principles of bibliographic access to Internet accessible digital materials and explores new methods for applying these principles in the context of new information technologies. Examines the value for retrieval of collecting authors' names, identifying authors' roles, collocating works and versions, and providing subject access through classification and controlled vocabularies for digital resources available through the WWW. Identifies emerging technologies and techniques that may be used in lieu of or as a supplement to traditional cataloguing to achieve these functions in organizing access to Internet resources
