    Abstract
A summary of a survey of the use of the DDC in libraries of the United States and Canada is presented. (5% of alle libraries in the United States and Canada use DDC; of these are at least 75% use the most recent full or abridges edition. Librarians wish to have DDC revised continuously, but they do not want the meanings of numbers changed. Any assistance that can be provided in the application of DDC is welcome. Most of the larger libraries do not believe zhat the current index provides sufficient assistance. Divisions needing revision are listed with an index number reflecting priority. DDC is seen to be warmly regarded by librarians in general and by public service librarians in particular

    Abstract
The Preserved Context Index System (PRECIS) developed for subject indexing for the BNB is discussed as a basis for various studies relating to classification which could be made from its initial phrases, strings, entries and back-up structure. Specific possibilities include use of mehodologies such as Goffman's "indirect method", Fox's "characterization" of rules, derivation of empirical hyperbolic distributions, and lognormal distributions. The relationship of existing methods of subject analysis to each other through PRECIS is explored. Brief samples are included

    Abstract
Examines LISA 1969 from the user's point of view. Criticizes the CRG classification notation for its complexity and cites difficulties in use. Use of a broader classification is recommended. Examples are quoted to illustrate that the subject index is not as helpful as it should be. Observes that the notation only is indexed and makes a plea for the contents of the abstracts to be indexed

    Abstract
Retrieval techniques may be based on the full text of documents, or on descriptors selected from a thesaurus. The latter approach constitutes an attempt to bridge the gap between demand and documents, which causes problems if demand cannot be forecast. Building up a thesaurus involves choosing the method of collecting descriptors, choosing the actual descriptors and making the system easily accessible to users. Classification and a classified catalogue are essential to the organisation of knowledge. Rules for the formation of classes have developed out of natural systems of classification. Chain indexing greatly aids the formation of the subject index. UDC and DDC are used in most documentation centres in the Netherlands. Public libraries mostly use SISO, a Dutch universal classification system
