    Abstract
    Describes FAQ Finder, a natural language question-answering system that uses files of frequently asked questions as its knowledge base. Unlike information retrieval approaches that rely on a purely lexical metric of similarity between query and document, FAQ Finder uses a semantic knowledge base (Wordnet) to improve its ability to match question and answer. Includes results from an evaluation of the system's performance and shows that a combination of semantic and statistical techniques works better than any single approach

    Abstract
    Presents Dynamic Reference Sifting - a novel architecture that attempts to provide both maximally comprehensive coverage and highly precise responses in real time, for specific home page categories. Describes Ahoy! The Homepage Finder (http://www.cs.washington.edu/research/ahoy), a fielded Web service that embodies Dynamic Reference Sifting for the domain of personal homepages. Ahoy! filters the output of mulptile Web indices to extract 1 or 2 references that are most likely to point to the person's homepage. If it finds no likely candidates, Ahoy! uses knowledge of homepage placement conventions, which it has accumulated from previous experience, to guess the URL for the desired homepage. Ahoy! finds the target homepage and ranks it as the top reference. 9% of the targets are found by guessing the URL. altaVista can find 58% of the targets and ranks only 23% of these as the top reference

    Knowledge Finder, developed by Aries System Corporation, Mass. consists of a CD-ROM database of Medline for use with the Apple Macintosh microcomputer. The most exhaustive version consists of 15 years of unabridged Index Medicus but variations include: 3, 6 or 10 years of Index Medicus unabridged, the core periodicals, and 5 or 10 years of speciality databases in specific medical subjects.     Abstract
    As an increasing number of cross disciplinary databases become accessible over the Internet, librarians are presented with the dilemma of which to choose to support user research. Several factors, such as cost, retrospective coverage, and document delivery, are usually considered in making a decision. However, one key factor: citation retrieval performance is often overlooked because comparative data has been unavailable. A study of 4 cross disciplinary databases was undertaken to provide those data. The databases consulted were: Article1st; UnCover; Faxon Finder; and GENL (a database comprised of 6 locally mounted Wilson databases: Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature; Business Periodicals Index; Humanities Index; Social Sciences Index; General Science Index; and Index to Legal Periodical Literature). In addition to citation frequency distribution, 2 other variables were examined; percentage of unique periodicals cited per search and relevance of citations to stated search topic.
