    "Eben erreicht uns eine traurige Nachricht aus der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt am Main: "Magda Heiner-Freiling, die Leiterin der Sacherschließungsabteilung der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek am Standort Frankfurt am Main, ist am 22. Juli 2007 im Alter von 57 Jahren während ihres Urlaubs tödlich verunglückt. Nach ihrem 1. Staatsexamen in den Fächern Deutsch, Englisch und Erziehungswissenschaften sowie weiteren Studien in den Fächern neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft, wissenschaftliche Politik und europäische Ethnologie begann 1974 ihr bibliothekarischer Werdegang als Bibliotheksreferendarin bei der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt am Main. Dort übernahm sie vor zwei Jahren die Leitung der Abteilung Sacherschließung. Im nationalen und im internationalen Bibliothekswesen war Magda Heiner-Freiling als exzellente Expertin bekannt und geschätzt. Schon die RSWK-Einführung in den achtziger Jahren hatte sie mit großem Engagement begleitet, die Übersetzung und Einführung der DDC im deutschsprachigen Bibliothekswesen wäre ohne Magda Heiner-Freiling nicht möglich gewesen. Sie wird uns als Expertin, Kollegin und als Mensch sehr fehlen." Frau Heiner-Freiling habe ich persönlich nicht nur als engagierte und umsichtige Leiterin der "Expertengruppe DDC" während des gesamten Übersetzungsprojekts DDC Deutsch und der Einführung der DDC im deutschsprachigen Raum kennen gelernt. Wie alle anderen EG-Mitglieder habe ich ihre überaus wohltuende Art, unsere Sitzungen vorzubereiten und zu leiten immer geschätzt und ihr diplomatisches Geschick, gepaart mit großer Professionalität und mit charmantem Durchsetzungsvermögen, bewundert. Damit vermochte sie mit uns auch die ärgsten Klippen zu umschiffen und hat alle Beteiligten immer wieder von neuem motiviert.
    Ich kannte sie außerdem als hoch intelligente, nie überhebliche Führungspersönlichkeit, als weltoffene, herzliche, humorvolle Frau, die oft unbeschwerte Fröhlichkeit ausstrahlte. Zu unserem Land hatte sie eine sehr persönliche Beziehung: als Kind besuchte sie manchmal Verwandte in Wien und verbrachte einige Male die Sommerferien im Salzkammergut. Ihr Bonmot von der "österreichischen Grazie", sie meinte damit ein Problemlösungspotenzial, das eher tänzelnd statt schnurstracks zum Ziel führen kann, wird mir mit Schmunzeln in lieber Erinnerung bleiben. Gerne kam sie während des Österreichischen Bibliothekartages im Millenniumsjahr 2000 für einen Gastvortrag zur Kommission für Sacherschließung nach Wien. Später ließ sie ebenso gerne ihren jüngeren Mitarbeitern/-innen den Vortritt dafür. Sie hatte uns heuer im Mai schon ein wenig in ihre beruflichen Pläne für die nächsten Jahre eingeweiht und wollte sich nach der schwierigen aber gelungenen Pionierphase des Klassifizierens mit DDC und mit Melvil in der DNB nun wieder vermehrt in die verbale Sacherschließung einbringen und ihre Erfahrung und Energie für die Überarbeitung des Regelwerks RSWK und die Optimierung der SWD zur Verfügung stellen."

Juli 2007 im Alter von 57 Jahren während ihres Urlaubs tödlich verunglückt. Sie wird in unserer Erinnerung weiterleben als Kollegin, deren enormes Fachwissen wir ebenso schätzten wie ihre warmherzige Sorge um das Wohlergehen ihrer Kollegen und Mitarbeiter. Sie war eine exzellente Expertin und engagierte Bibliothekarin und sie war dabei vor allem auch eine herzliche, immer hilfsbereite, sich für andere notfalls auch kämpferisch einsetzende, mitfühlende Kollegin und Vorgesetzte. Magda Heiner-Freiling verband, integrierte, schaffte Nähe und Vertrautheit nicht nur in ihrer unmittelbaren Umgebung, sondern mühelos auch über geografische Entfernungen hinweg. Ihren Kampfgeist, ihre Loyalität, ihre soziale Kompetenz, ihre Begeisterungsfähigkeit und ihre erfrischende Direktheit habe ich vor allem in den vergangenen zwei Jahren geschätzt, in denen sie mir als Abteilungsleiterin gegenübersaß. Nach ihrem 1. Staatsexamen in den Fächern Deutsch, Englisch und Erziehungswissenschaften sowie weiteren Studien in den Fächern Neuere deutsche Literaturwissenschaft, wissenschaftliche Politik und europäische Ethnologie an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz und an der Philipps-Universität in Marburg begann 1974 ihr bibliothekarischer Werdegang als Bibliotheksreferendarin bei der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt am Main. 1976 legte sie die bibliothekarische Staatsprüfung für den höheren Dienst an wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken an der Bibliotheksschule Frankfurt am Main ab. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit als Fachreferentin hat Magda Heiner-Freiling von der ersten Stunde an bei der RSWK-Entwicklung mitgearbeitet. Sie betreute die Belange der öffentlichen Bibliotheken mit großem Engagement und führte Anfang der neunziger Jahre die »Expertengruppe Erschließung für Kinder- und Jugendliteratur, Belletristik, Schul- und Berufsschulbücher«; auch hat sie sich viele Jahre in die Arbeit der Expertengruppe RSWK/SWD eingebracht. Ihrem ausgeprägten Interesse für das Andere, für andere Sprachen, andere Kulturen, entsprach ihr besonderes Interesse für die internationale Klassifikationspraxis und -theorie und den multilingualen Ansatz von Normvokabularien. Sie war von 1994 bis 2000 Mitglied des IFLA-Gremiums »Section on Classification and Indexing / Standing Committee« und hat diese Arbeit immer mit großer Begeisterung gemacht. Darüber hinaus hat sie in den IFLA Working Groups »Working Group of Anonymous Classics«, »Working Group on Guidelines for Multilingual Thesauri« und »Working Group >Survey on Subject Heading Languages in National Bibliographies<« aktiv mitgearbeitet.

    Abstract
    This paper reviews the career and legacy of William (Bill) Goffman, who served as a researcher, Professor, Dean and Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, from 1959 to 2000. Goffman pioneered mathematical information science broadly and in several key areas. First, he applied disease epidemiology concepts to model accurately the spread of knowledge and the formation of knowledge systems and their ecologies, including the dynamics of scientific discovery. Second, he proposed significant improvements in information retrieval through the deployment of multi-valued logic, appropriate file ordering, effective and efficient retrieval measures, and simplified retrieval approaches, including early work in citation-based searching. Third, Goffman applied Bradford-like distributions to model effective core research literature collection development and usage. Fourth, he developed original epidemiology models, and was an early contributor in biomedical informatics. His mathematical contributions have stood the test of time and will continue to be applicable indefinitely.

    Der amerikanische Philosoph Willard Van Oman Quine, der Weihnachten letzten Jahres im Alter von 92 Jahren starb, ist ein interessantes Phänomen in der Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts. In Fachkreisen gehört er sicherlich zu den meistdiskutierten Philosophen. Erst kürzlich erschien eine fünfbändige Aufsatzsammlung, in der 140 Texte von den mehr als 2000 enthalten sind, die bisher über ihn geschrieben wurden - wobei über Quine 140 Aufsätze in gerade mal einem Jahr entstehen. Führende Philosophen wie Peter Strawson und Stuart Hampshire sind in ihrer Einschätzung eindeutig: Quine ist der bedeutendste lebende systematische Philosoph", schrieb Hampshire 1979. Quine ist der bemerkenswerteste und einflussreichste lebende Philosoph", schrieb Strawson zehn Jahre später. Trotzdem ist Quine unter NichtPhilosophen weniger bekannt als zum Beispiel Wittgenstein oder Heidegger. Was ist der Grund dafür; dass Quine, der die Philosophen so stark beschäftigt und der Philosoph der Philosophen" genannt werden könnte, in der breiteren Offentlichkeit so wenig bekannt ist? Man könnte denken, dass seine Schriften zu schwergewichtig und schwierig sind. Sein Stil war aber brillant: lebendig, oft spielerisch und immer von funkelnder Klarheit. Er schrieb viel, arbeitete aber alles so gründlich durch wie ein Dichter. Sein Stil ist prägnant, jedes Wort zählt, trotzdem sind seine Texte flüssig und scheinbar mühelos geschrieben. Bertrand Russell, der erhin einen Nobelpreis für Literatur erhielt, war sehr viel weitschweifiger. Quines verdichteter Stil ist wahrscheinlich ein Grund, warum viele ihn schwierig finden. Man muss sich konzentrieren wie wenn man gute Gedichte liest; jeder Satz regt die Reflexion an. Dieser Zwang zur Konzentration ist natürlich größer, wenn man mit den Problemen, die erörtert werden, und mit dem Zusammenhang, in dem sie stehen, nicht vertraut ist. Trotzdem: Wenn man das Gesagte durchdenkt, ist man erstaunt, wie gut es Quine gelungen ist auszudrücken, was er mitteilen wollte. Viele seiner kurzen und treffenden Wendungen sind Teil des philosophischen Vokabulars geworden, wie zum Beispiel ,widerspenstige Erfahrung" (eine Erfahrung, die dem zuwiderläuft, was wir erwarten und uns daher zwingt, unsere Meinung zu revidieren) oder keine Entität ohne Identität" (wenn man über Gegenstände spricht, sollte man klare Kriterien dafür angeben, wann Gegenstände gleich und wann sie verschieden sind). Quine hat sich immer bemüht, seine Einsichten so klar und so einfach wie möglich zu formulieren. Das war für ihn ein wichtiger Teil der intellektuellen Redlichkeit.
