    Abstract
Book dedications by authors, often in verse form and appearing just before the title page, are one of the 6 elements describes by the French scholar Genette as paratextual. For some reasons dedications have failed to interest librarians, yet books containing them can be a valid object of bibliographic study, for the reasons that they carry special markings: are an example of a specific literary or semantic class; and reveal linguistic/stylistic features. Examines the history of literary dedications, citing examples by well-known writers, and suggests that cataloguing software should have a special field to record dedication

    Abstract
SciFinder Scholar, to be launched in Dec 97, is a graduate level tool for exploring 17 mio chemical substances and literature from 8.000 journals and patens in a database which is updated daily. It offers users: natural language subject searching; author searching, even with inexact spelling; various ways of exploring substances; and search by abstract or patent numbers. Chemical Abstracts Service have also launched SciFinder Substructure Module, intended to provide substructure access with the click of a mouse and so facilitate the generation of research ideas and the identification of useful derivatives

    Abstract
This article reprots the findings of an experiment employing a simulated scholarly use of an OPAC to determine the frequency of one-screen displays when a scholar searches for a known-item with so-called 'keywords' in an implied boolean system. The experiment revealed that a 'keyword' search formula comprising surname plus first and last title words produced a single screen 92.8% of the time, thereby reducing the failure of traditional title searching to produce single screens by nearly one half; such a formula also enables a scholar to search successfully with abbreviated, unsearchable bibliographic citations. Additional research should be carried out, for if it is further demonstrated that replacing traditional bibliographic catalog entries with transcribed title pages provides an improved known-item OPAC, users would benefit and libraries would enjoy huge savings

    Abstract
Stresses that S.R. Ranganathan was truly a great scholar, who made rich contribution to different aspects of library and information science, but is better known for his work in the field of library classification. discusses his distinctive contributions to classification such as normative principles, 3 plane model of work, freely faceted classification (involving facet analysis and the synthetic principle), postulational approach, fundamental categories and certain notational devices like the sector device, group notation device, emptying digit device and seminal mnemonic device. Regards these as seminal ideas forming the basis of his theory of library classification. Considers 7th ed. of the Colon Classification as the best example of the application of theses ideas

    Abstract
Based on a paper presented at the UNESCO Philosophy Forum International Conference, Paris, 14-17 March 1995. Presents the basic ideas underlying the provision of information services on the Internet: digital discrimination; disappearance of the great compilers; emergence of the computerized scholar; stored knowledge on the Internet becoming greater than that which can be accessed; accessible knowledge becoming greater than that which can be managed; digital parricide; the need to increase access to the Internet to avoid the rise of a new technological elite; emergence of a new language of the encyclopedia; pollution of the intellectual space on the Internet; and the issue of decentralization versus fragmentation

    Abstract
The index structure used in a project to provide access to photographs contained in the Conway Library Microfiches is the key to shared access for both images and objects. It contains data elements extracted from USMARC and UNIMARC formats. Since all fields of information do not need to reside with the primary document record, the basic structure of each microfiche index record can be adapted and expanded by other users to include information appropriate to the needs of a museum, a slide collection, a scholar, and a cultural heritage documentation project. Vocabulary standards must also be established before such cooperation can occur. Some, such as the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, are either nearing completion or under development at this time; others still need to be addressed. An effective system to provide access to both object and image must also take into account language differences, variant titles, variant spellings and variant attributions
