Abstract

Scholars have long noted the significance of Allegheny College's special collections to American cultural and educational history. Special collections have value to colleges and universities as publicity devices to draw scholars, students, and funding to the institution. Catalogers have an important role to play in marketing the library and the college through improved bibliographic access to these collections. Rare book and manuscript cataloging presents many challenges to catalogers, especially at smaller institutions. This report traces the evolution of Allegheny College's catalog, from book format in 1823, through card format, and finally to online. It also explores the bibliographic challenges created as the library moved from one format to another.

Abstract

The Core Standard for Rare Books, known as the DCRB Core standard, was approved by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging for use beginning in January 1999. Comparable to the core standards for other types of materials, the DCRB Core standard provides requirements for an intermediate level of bibliographic description for the cataloging of rare books. While the Core Standard for Books seems to have found a place in general cataloging practice, the DCRB Core standard appears to have met with resistance among rare book cataloging practitioners. This study investigates the extent to which such resistance exists by examining all of the DCRB Core records in the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) Online Union Catalog (WorldCat) and the Research Libraries Croup Union Catalog (RLIN) databases that were created during the standard's first five years. The study analyzes the content of the records for adherence to the standard and investigates the ways in which the flexibility of the standard and cataloger's judgment augmented many records with more than the mandatory elements of description and access.

Abstract

Patron queries at a four-year comprehensive college's online public access catalog were examined via transaction logs from March 2007. Three representative days were isolated for a more detailed examination of search characteristics. The results show that library users employed an average of one to three terms in a search, did not use Boolean operators, and made use of limits one-tenth of the time. Failed queries remained problematic, as a full one-third of searches resulted in zero hits. Implications and recommendations for improvements in the online public access catalog are discussed.

Abstract

Colon Classification is an outstanding contribution of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. This scheme is being used in large number of Indian libaries for classifying their documents and has been included in all levels of Library and Information Science courses conducted by Indian Universities and other Institutios. Colon Classification is one of the most scientific and logical schemes based on principles and postulates. However, at times, the rules, principles and postulates are considered to be complex in nature.This book is an attempt to explain the provision in simple language and lucid style. Abstract

This book, based on the class room teaching experience, has been divided into thee parts deemed convenient to the student community to wich it is primarily adressed. Part-I ,the most important discusses about the Rules, Facet Formulae, Subject Analysis, etc. To tell the users as to from where the isolates in each Facet are to be obtained. Each rules of CC-6 is explained with suitable examples in order to make it understandable. Another feature of this manual is that "Solved Examples" follow the discussion for evry Main Class included in CC-6. To provided the students with the opportunity for practice, an "Exercise for Practic" has been added in each Chapter. This book includes about one thousand solved examples for practice, answers to which have ben provided at the end. The basic theoritical concept of CC-6 required essentially to understand the rules, have been explained in part-II.It includes such topics as Fundamental Categories, common Isolates Devices, Phase Relation, among othor, and are suitably illustrated. Efforts have been made to clarify the concepts in simple language with a view to understand the Indian scheme, cnsidered one of the scientific classification system in the world.

Abstract

On the 22nd of July, 1989, the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) was founded. Starting in August 1989 ISKO had an official organ, the journal International Classification. This Journal was founded in 1974 by Dr. Ingetraut Dahlberg, the first President of the ISKO. With volume 20 (1993) the name of the journal was changed to Knowledge Organization. This bibliography has been compiled on the occasion of the second decade of ISKO. This bibliography indexes the content of International Classification and Knowledge Organization starting with International Classification volume 16(1989) issue 3 and ending with Knowledge Organization volume 26(1999) issue 3. All articles and all book reviews are included. From the news items, only those for which an author is mentioned and that were especially written for International Classification or Knowledge Organization, are entered in this bibliography. The bibliography also contains the papers of conferences organized by the International Society for Knowledge Organization, one of its national chapters, or sponsored by the ISKO or one of its chapters. If we overlooked a conference of which the papers should have been included, we apologize for this omission. A list of the conferences included can be found in the list of abbreviations. The bibliography is based on the literature that was available to the compilers. However, not all conference proceedings included in the bibliography could be found in sources available to us. In these cases descriptions from the bibliographies in International Classification and Knowledge Organization were used. For a few proceedings the help of national chapters was sought and obtained. They deserve our thanks. The bibliography is ordered according to the classification used for the current bibliography in Knowledge Organization. The complete classification - as it is used now - is published in this issue of Knowledge Organization. The bibliography also includes an Author Index. We want to add that this bibliography is more complete than the bibliographies in International Classification and Knowledge Organization.
