    Abstract
The history of book numbers starts only with Melvil Dewey, as before hom books were shelved in fixed location systems. The article traces the early attempts by Dewey himself to combine class numbers with author numbers and shows the development in the individualization of book numbers by a great number of classificationists and classifiers, among which J. Schwartz, W.S. Biscoe, Ch.A. Cutter, K.E. Sanborn, J.D. Brown, A.F. Rider and finally S.R. Ranganathan whose faceted structure and ease of application of book numbers seems still to be the optimal solution. Two rival systems of book numbers are alphabetical by author and chronological by the year of publication of a books. The concluding chapter is devoted to the existing literatur on book numbers and laments its vanishing quality. The study of book numbers is not getting due attention.

    Abstract
An in-house retrospective OCLC conversion process for music titles presents problems infrequently encountered in book titles. The proliferation of works by composers and the manipulation of title elements by publishers makes matching shelflist cards to online records difficult. Placing shelflist cards in alphabetical order by composer and performing presearch authority work saves online search time. Recording plate and/or publisher numbers on the shelflist is also helpful. Limiting composer/title searches by 1900 or ???? will help narrow searches done for shelflist cards which carry no date. If all else fails, the item may need to be retrieved from the stacks.

    Abstract
Duplicate records is a familiar problem in bibliographic databases. The problem is obvious when a union catalogue is established by automatically merging two or more separate and independent source of catalogue information. However, even in systems with on-line cataloguing and access to previous records, duplication is a problem. Author / title search search prior to cataloguing does not cut duplication to zero. A great deal of effort has been put into developing methods of duplicate detection. A major problem in this work has been efficiency. Particularly in the on-line setting is this of importance. Most studies have dealt with book and article material. The Research Libraries Group Inc. has described matching algorithms also for films, maps, recordings, scores and serials. Various methods of detecting duplicates will be discussed.

    Abstract
In subject cataloging of audiovisual materials generic terms like 'documentary' or 'absolute film' facilitate the work of users and librarians. On the concrete level the study shows 4 ways to make a list of generic terms for the application in general libraries. The heuristic function of the study is to offer methods towards the solution of problems in the field of subject cataloguing of non-book materials. (1) The formal subject heading in library science corresponds to generic terms; Anglo-American and German rules for subject cataloging, however, provide no list that is directly applicable. (2) The terminology of institutions administering many audiovisual documents has been examined; general libraries have to find a common denominator with medium depth of classification and balanced representation of fiction and nonfiction terms. (3) From encyclopedic definitions of generic terms 8 dimensions have been extracted characterizing the terms in question individually. (4) The contribution of communication science has been discussed explaining a research project

    Abstract
When considering an end-user's need to access information in a large data base, the real difference introduced by CD-ROM is not access from the personal computer per se, but local access from the personal computer. The question that must ne asked is this: should this difference affect the design of the user interface for searching large data bases on CD-ROM? 6 CD-ROM bibliographic data base products are reviewed: BRS/colleague MEDLINE, Wilsondisc Cumulative Book Index and MLA International bibliography, Dialog OnDisc ERIC, SilverPlatter Sociofile, CCOHS (Reteaco Findit) CCINFOdisc, and KnowledgeFinder MEDLINE. The user interface and functionality of each product is discussed in terms of 5 criteria: browsing, using menus, refining a search, accessing an on-line version, and printing and saving results. This review distinguishes between design features in each product which are holdovers from the on-line command interfaces of the past and innovations in user interface design made possible by having the data base locally on CD-ROM

    Abstract
In the continuing search for criteria for determining the form of compound headings (i.e., headings containing more than one word), many authors have attempted to deal with the problem of entry element and citation order. Among the proposed criteria are Cutter's concept of "significance," Kaiser's formula of "concrete/process," Prevost's "noun rule," and Farradane's categories of relationships*' (q.v.). One of the problems in applying the criteria has been the difficulty in determining what is "significant," particularly when two or more words in the heading all refer to concrete objects. In the following excerpt from Subject Catalogues: Headings and Structure, a widely cited book an the alphabetical subject catalog, E. J. Coates proposes the concept of "term significance," that is, "the word which evokes the clearest mental image," as the criterion for determining the entry element in a compound heading. Since a concrete object generally evokes a clearer mental image than an action or process, Coates' theory is in line with Kaiser's theory of "concrete/process" (q.v.) which Coates renamed "thing/action." For determining the citation order of component elements in a compound heading where the elements are equally "significant" (i.e., both or all evoking clear mental images), Coates proposes the use of "term relationship" as the determining factor. He has identified twenty different kinds of relationships among terms and set down the citation order for each. Another frequently encountered problem related to citation order is the determination of the entry element for a compound heading which contains a topic and a locality. Entering such headings uniformly under either the topic or the locality has proven to be infeasible in practice. Many headings of this type have the topic as the main heading, subdivided by the locality; others are entered under the locality as the main heading with the topic as the subdivision. No criteria or rules have been proposed that ensure consistency or predictability. In the following selection, Coates attempts to deal with this problem by ranking the "main areas of knowledge according to the extent to which they appear to be significantly conditioned by locality." The theory Coates expounded in his book was put into practice in compiling the British Technology Index for which Coates served as the editor from 1961 to 1977.
