    Abstract
CDMARC serials is the Cooperative Online Serials (CONSER) database on Cd-ROM. The CONSER database is probably the most exhaustice source of serial titles ever assembled and fits onto a single CD. The hardware requirements are a CD-ROM drive recognising MSCDEX, a PC/XT or higher, 5 MB of free hard disc space and 530 K of free RAM. Reviews searching procedures. Records come in catalogue and card image, MARC tagged, custom labelled or custom tagged formats

    Abstract
Discusses the underlying principles regarding cataloguing and catalogues. Main entry became largely irrelevant when the unit card and multiple access for works evolved. The title entry unit bibliographic record can maintain, if not improve, standardization and existing principles, and main entry is irrelevant to the catalogue user. Economic issues play a strong hand in suggesting its demise

    Abstract
Discusses the complex nature of urban, regional and local documents management, the decision making process of an in house classification system, and problems of converting a manual card cataloguing system to an computerized information retrieval system at Florida International University Library. The principles of this in house classification system can be used for any specialized collection

    Abstract
For decades print pathfinders have complemented card catalogues and been useful reference tools. They are overlooked as components of online catalogues, even though they can extend the depth of the catalogue. To encourage librarians to consider integrating pathfinders into online catalogues discusses problems in OPAC searching, describes the value and styles of pathfinders, and illustrates how to include them in a NOTIS system

    Abstract
Scholars have long noted the significance of Allegheny College's special collections to American cultural and educational history. Special collections have value to colleges and universities as publicity devices to draw scholars, students, and funding to the institution. Catalogers have an important role to play in marketing the library and the college through improved bibliographic access to these collections. Rare book and manuscript cataloging presents many challenges to catalogers, especially at smaller institutions. This report traces the evolution of Allegheny College's catalog, from book format in 1823, through card format, and finally to online. It also explores the bibliographic challenges created as the library moved from one format to another.

    Abstract
Categories, or concepts of high generality representing the most basic kinds of entities in the world, have long been understood to be a fundamental element in the construction of knowledge organization systems (KOSs), particularly faceted ones. Commentators on facet analysis have tended to foreground the role of categories in the structuring of controlled vocabularies and the construction of compound index terms, and the implications of this for subject representation and information retrieval. Less attention has been paid to the variety of ways in which categories can shape the overall architectonic framework of a KOS. This case study explores the range of functions that categories took in structuring various aspects of an early analytico-synthetic KOS, Julius Otto Kaiser's method of Systematic Indexing (SI). Within SI, categories not only functioned as mechanisms to partition an index vocabulary into smaller groupings of terms and as elements in the construction of compound index terms but also served as means of defining the units of indexing, or index items, incorporated into an index; determining the organization of card index files and the articulation of the guide card system serving as a navigational aids thereto; and setting structural constraints to the establishment of cross-references between terms. In all these ways, Kaiser's system of categories contributed to the general systematicity of SI.

    Abstract
Since the closing of the Sterling C. Evans Library author/title card catalog on march 6, 1989, librarians have observed a number of patrons who continued to use that catalog, even though NOTIS, the OPAC offered more comprehensive and current access to library holdings. To determine the reasons for this use, the authors prepared a one-page questionnaire, focusing on the users' preference for an inadequate card catalog in an environment which offers a superior OPAC. Card catalog patrons were then surveyed in order to gather data and build a user profile. Survey results were tabulated and analyzed, revealing the underlying reasons for users' preference for the card or online catalog. Conclusions will provide direction for improvements in users' access to online catalogs

    Abstract
Suggests that an appropriate approach in comparing online and card catalogues is to compare the 2 in relation to the processes in which bibliographic records are created (the input stage), manipulated (the storage stage) and retrieved (the output stage). Studies the concepts underlying these processes and reveals major differences between online and card catalogues. These differences are multiplied and widened when moving from input to output to such an extent that online catalogues can be considered as a significant departure from manual catalogues. The redesign for use in an online environment of bibliographical standards which are based on the card catalogue should be based on conceptual as well as practical differences between the online and card catalogues

    Abstract
This article reports the author's recent research in developing a holistic model for various levels of digital library (DL) evaluation in which perceived important criteria from heterogeneous stakeholder groups are organized and presented. To develop such a model, the author applied a three-stage research approach: exploration, confirmation, and verification. During the exploration stage, a literature review was conducted followed by an interview, along with a card sorting technique, to collect important criteria perceived by DL experts. Then the criteria identified were used for developing an online survey during the confirmation stage. Survey respondents (431 in total) from 22 countries rated the importance of the criteria. A holistic DL evaluation model was constructed using statistical techniques. Eventually, the verification stage was devised to test the reliability of the model in the context of searching and evaluating an operational DL. The proposed model fills two lacunae in the DL domain: (a) the lack of a comprehensive and flexible framework to guide and benchmark evaluations, and (b) the uncertainty about what divergence exists among heterogeneous DL stakeholders, including general users.
