    Abstract
    Scholars have long noted the significance of Allegheny College's special collections to American cultural and educational history. Special collections have value to colleges and universities as publicity devices to draw scholars, students, and funding to the institution. Catalogers have an important role to play in marketing the library and the college through improved bibliographic access to these collections. Rare book and manuscript cataloging presents many challenges to catalogers, especially at smaller institutions. This report traces the evolution of Allegheny College's catalog, from book format in 1823, through card format, and finally to online. It also explores the bibliographic challenges created as the library moved from one format to another.

    Abstract
    Before the implementation of NOTIS in January of 1988, all authority work at the Evans Library was recorded in an authority card file. Planning began early for the creation of an automated authority section. This section included a cataloger, staff from copy cataloging, and the now obsolete Card Catalog Maintenance Section. This diverse group presented a challenge because of their varying degrees of expertise. Areas of training that needed to be addressed included use of the OCLC and NOTIS systems and basic cataloging rules, especially as they apply to establishing names, subject headings, and series. Issues addressed included: staffing, equipment, materials, training, and procedures and policy decisions. The Library contracted with Blackwell, North America to convert the authority card file to machine readable form, giving the authority section its starting point. The section began training in March 1989 and became functional in July of that year. Even though the section continues to evolve, the original goals were met in the creation of a cohesive group with the basic knowledge and skills needed to transfer authority control from a manual to an automated environment.

    Abstract
    When a unit card has become easy to reproduce, and each entry has an equal value for users in a multiple-entry catalog, the main-entry principle is no longer useful. The historical development of the no-main-entry principle in Japan is examined. It is generally considered that a title entry is the Oriental tradition. However, Japanese catalogers had used codes based upon the main entry principle under the influence of both AACR and the Paris Principles until 1977, when a new code of Nippon Cataloging Rules (NCR) was compiled. The "Description Unit-Card System of NCR1977, which adopted the no-main-entry principle, seems to be the one which is needed in the age of the computer catalog.

    Abstract
    In this article, we examine some of the proposals which have dealt with the problems in cataloging in 2 different technological contexts: printed-card catalogs and online catalogs. We first look at some of the measures which attempted to deal with the 'crisis in cataloging' at the Library of Congress in the 1940s. Then we address some of the current problems in cataloging in the era of OPACs. In particular, we discuss the extent to which minimal-level cataloging, as defines by AACR and implemented in the OCLC database, works for maps. Our discussion is organized around 2 main groups of access points: controlled vocabulary data elements, including name data elements, and free-text data elements. In closing, we discuss prospects that the next generation of online catalogs uisng the Z39.50 protocol and SGML format might offer to minimal-level cataloging for maps

    Abstract
    For finding nonroman script library materials, catalogs with romanized access points alone are inadequate because they are unfamiliar to those who seek these materials. Relevant writers are surveyed. Information technology and MARC have eliminated the need to rely on card filers who knew only the order of letters in the roman alphabet. Two improvements are suggested: expand the MARC character repertoire and add rules to AACR to allow nonroman access points. Other issues are briefly described.

    Abstract
    Purpose - The paper aims to present the results of the first two tasks of a user study looking into mental models of the bibliographic universe and especially their comparison to the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) conceptual model, which has not yet been user tested. Design/methodology/approach - The paper employes a combination of techniques for eliciting mental models and consisted of three tasks, two of which, card sorting and concept mapping, are presented herein. Its participants were 30 individuals residing in the general area of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Findings - Cumulative results of concept mapping show a strong resemblance to FRBR. Card sorts did not produce conclusive results. In both tasks, participants paid special attention to the original expression, indicating that a special place for it should be considered. Research limitations/implications - The study was performed using a relatively small sample of participants living in a geographically limited space using relatively straight-forward examples. Practical implications - Some solid evidence is provided for adoption of FRBR as the conceptual basis for cataloguing. Originality/value - This is the first widely published user study of FRBR, applying novel methodological approaches in the field of Library and Information Science.

    Abstract
    Surveys the status of catalguing practice in university libraries in 3 Asian developing countries, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Saudia Arabia. Examines the extent of the usage of international cataloguing tools such as cataloguing codes (AACR, ISBD), classification schemes (DDC, LCC) and subject heading lists (Sears, LCSH). Results indicate that there is an overall uniformity in the use of such tools, with a trend towards automation of cataloguing services with more access points for catalogue searching. Online catalogues are also replacing all traditional catalogue forms (card, printed, and microform). Findings show that, in using information technology in technical services, Malaysian university libraries are more advanced than those of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia

    Abstract
    Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR, 1998), the study commissioned by IFLA, brings revolutionary changes in the way we see modern computer catalogues. The catalogue is not seen as a sequence of bibliographic records and a copy of a card catalogue, but as an interconnected network of related information. Implications of the new model for the future development of catalogues are discussed. Special attention is given to access points and relationships between entities and the changes those will bring into both the formal and subject cataloguing, and authority files.

    Abstract
    Since 1986, a project has been underway to catalogue a private collection of the massive body of work of the artist Anne Ward Huey. The project has progressed from a handwritten card file to a computer file using AACR2 and OCLC tags and format. A compact disc or videotape file is also presently projected. In addition to taking traditional libray cataloguing out of the library setting, the project has addressed a number of problems involved in cataloguing silkscreen prints, and the records created by the project also contain information that AACR2 does not specifically address but that artists consider important. Recommends that the cataloguing rules be revised to encompass these specific aspects of cataloguing art work.

Discusses specific URL structures: file related URLs (file and ftp); WWW URLs (http); Gopher URLs (gopher); electronic mail URLs (mailto); Usenet newsgroups URLs (news); and remote login URLs (telnet and tn3270). Notes other proposals for identifying Internet resources and services that often become misinterpreted as URLs and lists some of the characters which may not be used within a URL.     Abstract
    The relationship between library catalogues and electronic resources differs from that between catalogues and physical materials, particularly with regard to cataloguing rules, which were originally designed to help users of card catalogues to find physical works on library shelves. However, these rules apply awkwardly to electronic resources because functionally different electronic works raise special cataloguinf issues. Discusses the problems of describing remote electronic resources in online catalogues with particular reference to the InterCat project: a nationwide experiment to create a database of Internet resources in MARC format, containing description, location and access information (including PURLs = Persitent URLs)). Concludes that descriptive information helps the user identify the works needed, but that it is practical to provide only minimal desriptive information for remote electronic resources in the catalogue record. To a limited extent, the access lost from reduced description can be replaced with new cataloguing techniques designed to stabilize the catalogue record

    Abstract
    The study Functional Requirements for Bibliograpbic Records (FRBR) was commissioned by IFLA and published in 1998. It defines the core functions of a catalogue (and bibliographic records) as a gateway to information. For that purpose an abstract entity-relationship model of a catalogue is proposed. The FRBR model is revolutionary. The (computer) catalogue is not seen as a sequence of bibliographic records and a replica of the traditional card catalogue, but rather as a network of connected entities, enabling the user to perform seamlessly all the necessary functions. So far there has been some theoretical discussion of the model and some limited experiments, but there is a lack of research in how to implement this theoretical model in practice, in new-generation catalogues. In this paper some reactions to the model are analysed. The main focus is an consequences of the model for the OPAC interface design, particularly the searching functionality and display of results.

    Abstract
    Forty years ago the ICCP in Paris laid the foundations of international co-operation in descriptive cataloging without explicitly speaking of authority control. Some of the factors in the evolution of authority control are the development of catalogs (from card catalog to local automation, to today's OPAC on the Web) and services provided by libraries (from individual service to local users to system networks, to the World Wide Web), as well as international agreements on cataloging (from Paris Principles to the UBC programme, to the report on Mandatory data elements for internationally shared resource authority records). This evolution progressed from the principle of uniform heading to the definition of authority entries and records, and from the responsibility of national bibliographic agencies for the form of the names of their own authors to be shared internationally to the concept of authorized equivalent heading. Some issues of the present state are the persisting differences among national rules and the aim of respecting both local culture and language and international readability.

    Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) is a relatively new conceptual model of the bibliographic universe. While it is recognized among library experts, there is a considerable lack of user studies. A pilot study, consisting of three different tasks, was conducted to test the instruments for acquiring mental models of the bibliographic universe. Results show that users do not have a consistent mental model of the bibliographic universe and that various techniques used can be useful for acquiring individuals' mental models of the bibliographic universe. Of the three tasks, the one asking people to rank pairs of similar item according to substitutability revealed results that were closest to FRBR, while card sorting and concept mapping exercises failed to provide a single alternative model.

    Abstract
    The 2nd objective of the catalogue, adopted internationally in the Paris Principles, requires that cataloguing records for particular authors and particular works be easily identified (IFLA 1991). Analysis of the requirements of the 2nd objective of the catalogue shows that it has 2 components: a retrieval component; and a display component; and that it may be interpreted broadly to include related works and works about a work or author. Investigates 2 schemes for their contributions to the creation of online catalogue displays that meet 2nd objective requirements. Analyzes the catalogue filing rule scheme to show that author and work displays in card catalogues have been composed of many groups or classes of materials that may also be used to create organized displays in online catalogues. The groups used in the filing rule scheme are based on relationships among items. Proposes a scheme based on Tillet's bibliographic relationship taxonomy to discover additional types of relationships that may be used to group record in online catalogue displays leading to a new scheme for the creation of organized display in online catalogues. Incorporates elements from both the filing rule scheme and the bibliographic relationship taxonomy to create displays that meet the requirements of the 2nd objective more fully than either scheme does alone
