    Abstract
Reviews ZyINDEX 5.0 for Windows, which allows the user to search for words in a document or documents, and can search across many document formats - ASCII word processors, dBase 3 and dBase 4, and most popular word processors such as WordPerfect, MS Word and Write. Concludes that it is well worth the cost ($ 395 for a single user) for anyone with large amounts of data to which they need quick access. Although it takes time to build the index, once it it built, searching is very fast. ZyINDEX's ability to handle complex searches is another of its strong points

    Abstract
Considers whether graphic user interfaces (GUI) are based on interface design principles that will enhance online searching in the long term. Traces GUI origins. Examines the design considerations underlying them. A good GUI design should empower users, communicate visuelly and encourage interaction. Using these design criteria, examines 2 newly released GUI: Data Times EyeQ 1.22 and Dow Jones N/R 5.0. Highlights some of the problems with their use and the trade-offs that are necessary in using GUIs

    Abstract
Due to a large variety of noisy information embedded in Web pages, Web-page classification is much more difficult than pure-text classification. In this paper, we propose to improve the Web-page classification performance by removing the noise through summarization techniques. We first give empirical evidence that ideal Web-page summaries generated by human editors can indeed improve the performance of Web-page classification algorithms. We then put forward a new Web-page summarization algorithm based on Web-page layout and evaluate it along with several other state-of-the-art text summarization algorithms on the LookSmart Web directory. Experimental results show that the classification algorithms (NB or SVM) augmented by any summarization approach can achieve an improvement by more than 5.0% as compared to pure-text-based classification algorithms. We further introduce an ensemble method to combine the different summarization algorithms. The ensemble summarization method achieves more than 12.0% improvement over pure-text based methods.

    Abstract
The introduction (1.0) of this article considers the status of the thesaurus within LIS and asks about the future prospect for thesauri. The main following points are: (2.0) Any knowledge organization system (KOS) is today threatened by Google-like systems, and it is therefore important to consider if there still is a need for knowledge organization (KO) in the traditional sense. (3.0) A thesaurus is a somewhat reduced form of KOS compared to, for example, an ontology, and its "bundling" and restricted number of semantic relations has never been justified theoretically or empirically. Which semantic relations are most fruitful for a given task is thus an open question, and different domains may need different kinds of KOS including different sets of relations between terms. (4.0) A KOS is a controlled vocabulary (CV) and should not be considered a "perfect language" (Eco 1995) that is simply able to remove the ambiguity of natural language; rather much ambiguity in language represents a battle between many "voices" (Bakhtin 1981) or "paradigms" (Kuhn 1962). In this perspective, a specific KOS, e.g. a specific thesaurus, is just one "voice" among many voices, and that voice has to demonstrate its authority and utility. It is concluded (5.0) that the traditional thesaurus does not have a place in modern information retrieval, but that more flexible semantic tools based on proper studies of domains will always be important.
