- Abstract
- This study surveyed 536 CAL publications in 71 SSCI (Social Science Citation Index) journals from 1998 to February 2006 to identify trends and lacunae for future research. The parameters and keywords employed by the authors are first presented, followed by a description of the study's general findings. A comparison is then drawn between CAL and recent depictions of the blogosphere, for the majority of the contributors to the field produced only a few articles and authors of individual publications demonstrated a far greater collective influence on the field than the more frequently-cited authors. Results also revealed that the amount of articles pertaining to the aged, disabled children, and home schooling were significantly lower than those relating to school student's learning. This study offers an interesting snapshot of a field that is apparently on the rise; moreover, it raises some issues to be addressed in further research on CAL-related topics.

- Abstract
- Describes the development and evaluation, at Western Michigan University, of a multimedia self instructional tutorial designed to introduce library services and teach basic skills in a cost effective manner. Reports results of an evaluation comparing the tutorial with traditional workbook instruction. No significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups, indicating that the tutorial was as effective as the workbook. Includes implications for user education, along with advice for developers of similar projects

- Describes the work performed at Ohio State Univ., Biological Sciences Library, to develop a computer based user training tutorial to provide on demand instruction for student users of the CD-ROM databases: Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts and Life Sciences Collection. - Reports on a 1992 study, commissioned by the UK Universities and Research Councils Joint Network Team on the potential impact of the high speed SuperJANET network on teaching and learning practices in universities. Structured interviews with staff at Cambridge and Kent universities were used to predict and identify any inhibitors and actions necessary to ensure effective take up. - Abstract
- Reports a study of undergraduate students' use of computer-based information retrieval services in relation to their cognitive and learning styles. Includes a survey of staff at Sheffield University, UK on their use of computer databases and the extend to which undergraduates are made aware of these services. Results show that undergraduate use is low and varies greatly between students of differnt faculties. Student searching behaviour was found to be basic and their performance inadequate. Significant correlation's between cognitive and learning styles and search behaviour were found. Computer-assisted learning (CAL) packages were developed and customised for 3 departments. Guidelines were drawn up based on the project's findings for introducing a computerised information sources programme into the undergraduate curriculum and preparing CAL teaching packages on information skills

- Abstract
- Benutzer von E-Learning-Produkten sind einer Doppelbeiastung ausgesetzt: Aufnehmen von Lernstoff und Erlernen des Umgangs mit Programmen. Der Gefahr, Benutzer einer kognitiven Überlastung auszusetzen, kann eine gute Usability entgegenwirken. Es werden Benutzerfreundlichkeit von Teilen eines E-Learning-Moduls »Automatische Inhaltserschließung« untersucht mit analytischen Inspektionsmethoden und empirischen Usability-Tests. Da der Designprozeß nicht iterativ gestaltet wurde, dienen die Ergebnisse aus den Inspektionen zur Vorbereitung der Tests. Die Testergebnisse werden genutzt, um Erkenntnisse der expertenorientierten Methoden zu verifizieren. Es wird analysiert, ob die Inspektionsmethoden Probleme aufdecken, die auch von den Teilnehmern an den Usability-Tests als solche empfunden wurden. Zur praktischen Umsetzung der Lösungsansätze werden Usability-Reports verfaßt und ein Storyboard konzipiert.

- Abstract
- Wie müssen wir virtuelle Rundgänge und Online-Tutorials gestalten, damit sie ihre Zielgruppe auch wirklich erreichen? Worauf müssen wir bei einer guten Präsentation unseres OPACs achten? Was machen wir mit großen Schülergruppen? Diesen Fragen stellten sich insgesamt 22 Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare in Münster und Köln während zweier Fortbildungsveranstaltungen des HBZ im Juni 2003. Ziel der jeweils zweitägigen Workshops, die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Adhoc-Arbeitsgruppe "Informationskompetenz" der AG der Universitätsbibliotheken im VBNW konzipiert wurden, waren Konzepte und erste Schritte zur Umsetzung von elektronischen Angeboten zur Vermittlung von Bibliotheksbzw. Informationskompetenz. Dem voraus ging die konstruktive Bewertung von bereits existierenden Materialien, die zum einen von den Teilnehmern aus ihren Bibliotheken mitgebracht wurden, zum anderen über Bibliotheks-Homepages abrufbar waren. Die Teilnehmer, die in ihren Bibliotheken bereits Benutzerschulungen konzipieren und durchführen, beschäftigten sich dabei in Gruppen u.a. mit den Themen - Virtuelle Rundgänge, - Online-Tutorials - Bibliothekseinführungen für Schüler und Erstsemester - Präsentationen von Online-Katalog und Methoden zur Literatursuche. Im Folgenden werden einige wesentliche und manchmal durchaus kontrovers diskutierte Ergebnisse und Thesen wiedergegeben, die sich aus der Arbeit der Teilnehmer ergeben haben. Sie erheben keinen Anspruch auf Ausgewogenheit oder Vollständigkeit, können aber als Anregungen und Diskussionsgrundlage für zukünftige Projekte dienen.
