    Abstract
Investigates the effects of context-weks versus context-strong tasks and learning style on the citation frequencies and citation percentages of 4 mental models students perceived to be inherent in a hypermedia learning environment. The 4 mental models were semantic networks, concept maps, frames / scripts and schemata. They were further grouped as linear. In study 1 the search participants could cite as many of the 4 mental models as they chose for each of the target commands, features or tools, in study 2 they were limited to citing only one

    Abstract
Offers an introduction to hypertext for librarians. Defines hypertext. Discusses the advantages of hypertext according to the creation and tracing of references; flexibility of nodes and links; cognition augmentation and collaborative work. Examines hypertext disadvantages and problems by considering its static nature; conceptual fragmentation; disorientation; cognitive overhead; presentation rhetoric; cost and intellectual security. Discusses library applications of hypertext covering information retrieval; online databases; citation indexing; OPACs and electronic books. Considers expert systems with hypertext features and hypertext with artificial intelligence

    Abstract
Reports on research which aims to discover the path patterns through which users retrieve information in hypertext systems. Takes a pragmatic approach in which the use of a hypertext information retrieval system by a group of subjects was monitored to collect path pattern data. Two frequency distribution models were developed and tested using these data. Path length followed a shifted negative minimal distribution. The influence of search tasks on path patterns was examined and found to have no effect. These models can provide a background for examination of systems via stimulation studies

    Abstract
Reports on an expert evaluation of recent hypertext systems. The aim of the study was to examine how the design of the stacks affected 6 different dimensions: purpose of the hypertext system, domain or content, structure of the nodes and links; navigation methods, control mechanisms and style of presentation. There was considerable variability betwenn the stacks on these dimensions and the criteria interact in complex ways

    Abstract
Gives an overview of the cognitive flexibility and situated action theoretical perspectives. Discusses how beliefs learners hold about the nature of learning and the structure of knowledge have been found to influence learning in general and learning with hypertext in particular. Reports on a study into acquisition and transfer of complex knowledge after using a conceptually-indexed hypertext learning environment based on recent theory and research

    Abstract
Outlines the results of a pilot study designed to consider what constitutes a landmark in hypertext. Tests users' memories for locations visited on the WWW. Reports the results, and outlines a refined methodology for a new study. By understanding more about users' navigation through hypertext information space, the issue of recognition of informative materials on the WWW may be addressed

    Abstract
Reports on a study into the acquisition and transfer of complex knowledge using a conceptually indexed hypertext learning environment based on recent cognitive theory and research. It employed 2 differently structured hypertext thematic criss-crossing (TCC) treatments, Guided TCC and Learner Selected TCC, that demonstrated interrelationships between abstract conceptual and case specific knowledge components in the hypertext materials. Results suggest that students need explicit modelling and scaffolding support in order to learn complex knowledge from a case-based, conceptually indexed hypertext learning environment

    Abstract
The success of hypertext as an information system will depend on its usability. Hypertext systems have mostly been built as research prototypes and paid little attention to user interface usability. Reports experiments conducted to measure the usabiliy of 6 well-known hypertext systems. The 1st experiment measures authoring speed and the 2nd browsing speed for novice users. Results show that the easiest systems to use, for novices, are those with the simplest models. Factors such as a high information band width (multiple card displays), an uncluttered sreen and simple interaction also contribute to usability. For authoring, NoteCards emerging as statistically faster than other systems

    Abstract
Reports a descriptive study conducted with 17 middle school students reading hypertext versions of two short stories. The study focused on gathering and analysing detailed information on students' use of various text enhancements designed to support their reading comprehension and to teach them the use of meta cognitive reading strategies. Data were collected via observations and interviews, as well as a computer monitor that recorded all student interactions with the hypertext documents. Analysis of the monitor transcripts led to the identification of 6 hypertext reading patterns: skimming, checking, reading, responding, studying and reviewing. The reading patterns varied considerable on at least 2 dimensions and their frequency of occurrence was felt to be influenced by such factors as software design, the instructional context, and the student's perception of the task

    Abstract
Reports on research examining the relationship of searcher performance and perception of performance, particulary for hypertext-based onformation retrieval systems for bibliographic data. Employs a prototype hypertext bibliographic retrieval system called HyperLynx. Evaluates its use by 83 subjects at the School of Library and Information Science and the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA. Measures of system usgae indicate that there is no significant relationship between confidence and the number of record pages visited, although confident searchers searched for shorter time periods. The reality check measures shows that both novice and experienced searchers were over confident in their performance

    Abstract
Presents the preliminary results of a pilot research project on disorientation in hypertextual educational systems. It explores spatial cognition's correlation with hypermedia navigation. Analyzes mental models, in order to justify their use as a basis for interface design. Introduces the notion of disorientation in a hypermedia environment. Illustrates the co-ordinates of experiments set up to verify the assumption that users need to build some form of conceptual representation of devices they are interacting with in order to understand them, and reports the results. Redefines the notions of spatial metaphor and of maps in the light of the results
