    Abstract
    Examines a simpler cataloguing format offered by PCs, without disturbing compatibility, using A-Z cataloguing rules for data input, category codes for tagging and computer-supported data input through windows. Gives numerous examples of catalogue entries, basing techniques on certain category schemes set out by Klaus Haller and Hans Popst. Examines catalogue entries in respect of categories of data bases for authors and corporate names, titles, single volume works, serial issues of collected works, and limited editions of works in several volumes.

    Abstract
    AUTOCAT soll ein in der Routineproduktion gebrauchstüchtiges wissensbasiertes System zur Formalerfassung von Zeitschriftenaufsätzen nach INIS-Regeln werden. Der AUTOCAT-Prototyp übernimmt eine Zeitschrift vom optischen Leser und liefert Output in der Form eines ausgefüllten INIS-Datenblattes ab. Die Formalerfassung untergliedert sich in die schwierigere Erkennung von Informationselementen und deren leichtere Transformation nach INIS-Regeln. AUTOCAT erkennt die Informationselemente mit seiner Repräsentation des Erwartungswissens über Zeitschriftenstrukturen. Sie wurde anhand von rund 330 Kernzeitschriften des Faches Physik validiert. Ihr Schwerpunkt ist die Darstellung der Zusammensetzungsstruktur des komplexen Informationsobjetkt Zeitschrift. Konkrete Zeitschriften werden abgeleitet, indem man die Beschreibungen der Zeitschriftenkomponenten mit Typangaben spezifiziert. Die Repräsentation ist in PROLOG implementiert

    Abstract
    When a unit card has become easy to reproduce, and each entry has an equal value for users in a multiple-entry catalog, the main-entry principle is no longer useful. The historical development of the no-main-entry principle in Japan is examined. It is generally considered that a title entry is the Oriental tradition. However, Japanese catalogers had used codes based upon the main entry principle under the influence of both AACR and the Paris Principles until 1977, when a new code of Nippon Cataloging Rules (NCR) was compiled. The "Description Unit-Card System of NCR1977, which adopted the no-main-entry principle, seems to be the one which is needed in the age of the computer catalog.

    Abstract
    This paper reports the results of a year-long survey conducted at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to determine what level of cataloging copy (Library of Congress, member input, or none) is present on OCLC at the time an item is received in Technical Services and after a six-month waiting period. These results were used to divert selected monographs from the normal workflow in order to expedite their cataloging and to release needed shelf space for other items.

Some problems brought forth through the translation process and the laws in the workability of rules in a nonEnglish working language are examined.     Abstract
    Dieses Buch bringt eine Einführung in die Katalogisierung für öffentliche Bibliotheken, der zweiten Auflage liegt die autorisierte Ausgabe der "Regeln für öffentliche Bibliotheken, RAK-ÖB" von 1986 zugrunde. Der Stoff wird gemäß dem Prinzip, das die Autorin in ihrer praktischen Arbeit verwendet hat, dargestellt: 1) Voranstellung der theoretischen Grundlagen; diese sind durch viele Beispiele erläutert; 2) praktische Beispiele anhand von kopierten Haupttitelseiten mit umfangreichen Erläuterungen und Angabe der betreffenden Paragraphen. Die Beispiele zur Theorie und auch die praktischen Beispiele wurden weitgehend aus dem Bestand einer typischen öffentlichen Bibliothek ausgewählt. Neben den allgemeinen RAK-ÖB-Bestimmungen werden auch die Alternativregeln, die deutschsprachige Ansetzungen der Namen und Sachtitel zulassen, berücksichtigt. Die zweite Auflage wurde auf die Ausgabe von 1986 der Regeln ausgerichtet, dadurch ergaben sich Änderungen und Erweiterungen. Auch ein Abschnitt über die Katalogisierung von Bilderbüchern wurde aufgenommen. Ziel des Buches ist die Einführung der Bibliothekare der öffentlichen Bibliotheken in das neue Regelwerk. Es ist sowohl für Studenten als auch für Bibliothekare, die sich den Stoff selbst aneignen wollen, gedacht.     Abstract
    LIAS, the Pennsylvania State University's (Penn State) integrated interactive online system, provides for messaging by the user to inform library staff of errors found in bibliographic records. The message is sent by use of the OOPS command, and results in a printout which is used by processing staff for online catalog maintenance. This article describes LIAS, the use of the OOPS command, the processing of the resulting OOPS reports, an assessment of the effect of its use, and some speculation on the expansion of the LIAS message system for use in catalog maintenance.

    Abstract
    A training program for new catalogers is described which uses class sessions and a training manual in addition to actual cataloging. The exercises in the manual are designed to stimulate discussion, with the ultimate aim of developing judgment and an ability to analyze, as well as ensuring the mastery of cataloging principles. Classes were held over a period of twelve to thirteen weeks; some were attended by a few experienced paraprofessional and clerical staff members as well as by new librarians. The primary benefit of a formal training program is that, ideally, it provides not only a structured learning situation but also promotes the understanding of cataloging as a structured system.
